LOGINAdrian had just ended a meeting when his phone buzzed again. He glanced at the screen briefly before tossing it back on the table, irritation flickering across his face because it was an unknown number.
It buzzed again. And again. “Mr. Cole?” one of the board members called cautiously, noticing his distraction. Adrian exhaled slowly, leaning back into his chair. “Continue.” But his focus wasn’t there anymore. The phone buzzed again and this time, something about it felt off so he picked it up. “Hello?” “Is this Mr. Adrian Cole?” a calm but urgent voice asked from the other end. “Yes.” “This is St. Mary’s Hospital. We’re calling concerning Mr. Sterling” Adrian sat up instantly, “Ava’s father?” he cut in sharply. “Yes. He was admitted into the ICU earlier today. His condition was critical, but he has been stabilized for now. We tried reaching you earlier your number was listed as the emergency contact.” Adrian’s grip on the phone tightened. “Tried reaching me?” “Yes, also Miss Ava called multiple times. She said she couldn’t reach you.” For the first time that day, something unfamiliar crossed Adrian’s face. Not anger or annoyance but something heavier. “…I see,” he said quietly. The call ended, but Adrian remained still, the phone pressed against his ear long after the line had gone dead. Then slowly… he lowered it, his expression darkened. He opened his call log, to see multiple missed calls from Ava. Ava. Ava. Ava. Missed calls stacked one after the other, his jaw tightened. The staffs took it as their cue to leave and each person stood trying their best not to disturb him but before he could process it further, a soft knock sounded on the door. It was unanswered but Livia stepped in, heels clicking softly against the polished floor. A subtle smile played on her lips, one that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “You had a delivery,” she said lightly, placing an envelope on his desk. Adrian didn’t look at it immediately, his attention was still fixed on his phone. Then finally, he reached for the envelope, something about Livia’s silence made him pause. She wasn’t leaving but was watching instead like she knew the content. Adrian’s fingers slid under the flap as he pulled out the document. His eyes moved across the page once, then stopped. [DIVORCE AGREEMENT] was boldly written. For a brief second, nothing happened. Then Adrian let out a short, hollow laugh. “…What?” His eyes scanned it again, slower this time and he noticed her signature was already there. Neat. Steady. Final. He grabbed his phone immediately, scrolling through his messages. And then he saw it. A message from Ava. Unread. His finger hovered for a split second before opening it; It seems you have found something good for yourself. I don’t want to ruin it for you. Lauren will send you the divorce papers. I have signed them. Please sign before the end of tomorrow. Adrian’s vision blurred for a moment, when it cleared, his eyes were no longer calm. They were red, dangerously red. The phone in his hand trembled slightly before he clenched it tighter. Slowly… very slowly… he lifted his head and his gaze locked onto Livia. But she didn’t flinch. Instead, she tilted her head slightly and rolled her eyes, as if his reaction was nothing more than an inconvenience. Adrian stood up abruptly, the chair scraping loudly against the floor, “Cancel all my appointments,” he said coldly, already grabbing his coat. Without waiting for her response, he strode out. The drive home was a blur, he ignored the red lights…broke a lot of traffic rules, horns blared behind him but none of it registered. Only one thing echoed in his mind. Divorce. By the time he arrived, his breathing was uneven. He pushed the door open roughly. “Ava” But the word died in his throat as he was welcomed with silence. The house felt wrong, too quiet and too empty. A slow unease crept in. He moved further inside, his steps quickening. “Ava?” still nothing. He walked toward the bedroom, opened the door and froze. The wardrobe was empty, the dresser, cleared. Everything that once belonged to her was gone. For a moment, Adrian just stood there, staring as if his mind refused to process what his eyes were seeing. Then suddenly, he turned, grabbing his phone. He dialed her number. Once. Twice. Three times and each time the call failed. His expression darkened. She blocked his number. A sharp breath escaped him as he ran a hand through his hair roughly. “What the hell…” he muttered under his breath, his thoughts raced. Where would she go? Lauren? But then, something else followed. The hospital, she had to be there. Adrian didn’t waste another second. Few minutes later, he was at the hospital, the corridors smelled of antiseptic and tension. Adrian walked in with long, urgent strides, his presence drawing attention immediately. “I’m here for Mr. Sterling” he said sharply at the front desk but the nurse hesitated. “I’m sorry, sir, but visitation is restricted” “I’m family.” he explained but there was a pause. Then another nurse stepped forward, her expression more firm. “You’ve been specifically restricted from access.” Adrian blinked once.“…What?” “I’m sorry, sir.” His jaw clenched. Without another word, he pushed past them, heading straight toward the ICU ward. “Sir, you can’t!” He stopped in front of the glass panel as his eyes scanned the room inside there were beeping machines, monitors and a ffrail figure on the bed. But, no Ava. His chest tightened. “Sir, you need to step away” Adrian turned slowly, his patience finally snapping. “I’m Adrian Cole,” he said, his voice low but dangerous. “Who gave you the authority to deny me access?” The doctor standing nearby adjusted his glasses slightly before answering. “The order came directly from Damien Cole.” For a split second, Adrian thought he misheard. “…What?” “The instruction was very clear.”the doctor added Adrian’s brows furrowed deeply, “Damien…” he repeated slowly. Then his eyes narrowed. “My uncle?” The word felt strange even as he said it because none of this made sense. Not the restriction, not the timing and definitely not Damien’s involvement. Adrian felt something worse than confusion and he didn’t like it. Not one bit.[KnightTech Empire]The building made a statement of itself…with walls made of glass and steel arranged aesthetically. The lobby was wide and high-ceilinged, the reception desk curved while the staffs moved with the brisk certainty of people who knew exactly what they were there for.April walked in like it wasn't her first time. She was dressed simply, dark trousers and a fitted top with her hair pulled back. She had spent the morning not overthinking it and to just be herself, missing a day of school for this particular confrontation."I'm here to see Lucas Knight," she told the receptionist. The girl behind the desk looked up with a polished smile that played pleasantly on her cheeks, "Do you have an appointment?""No.""Ooh…Mr. Knight is currently unavailable. If you'd like to leave your…""Tell him April Sterling is here," April said without raising her voice. "He'll know who I am."After a minute of staying silent, the receptionist decided to help her so she left while April ste
The best place Lauren could think of taking April was to her apartment. April refused to go back home, she also didn't want to go to Ava's mansion. April sat in the middle of the long couch with both hands wrapped around the mug Lauren had pressed into them without asking what she wanted. The mug was warm and that small specific comfort was doing more for her than she wanted to admit. She had stopped crying somewhere between the car ride and when they got to the front door. Not because she felt better…just because the body had its limits and hers had been reached.Lauren sat across from her. She had changed out of her jacket and was nursing her own mug, watching April with the patient attention of someone who was choosing their words very carefully."Do you want to tell me what happened in there?" Lauren asked but April looked into the coffee instead."April.""I'm fine.""You were crying in the middle of the street," Lauren said quietly."I said I'm fine, Lauren."Lauren exhaled sof
April stood in her room, her face gloomy as she check her calendar for the umpteenth time.“Six days…”she muttered as her mind went to Lucas. She had tried to reach him for six days…Six days of unanswered texts, calls that rang out and messages that turned blue without reply. Six days of watching the typing indicator appear and disappear and appear again without a single word arriving like he was contemplating if he should reply her or not. Six days of convincing herself she wasn't going to do what she was about to do.Then she found out his resignation from Silver Crest Academy had been finalized and no explanation was given to the school administration. He was simply no longer a substitute teacher. His name had been removed from the system quietly.“Mr Lucas is quite a strange man” April remembered Gavin made that statement. That was the last straw…she's going to find out what his problem is and why it looked like he was crawling into a shell. “Yeah…” she muttered and made her
[Cole Group building]Amber sat comfortably on a seat while she patiently waited for Damien to attend to her, with the way she wore a thick frown over her face, you could tell that the boardroom was not her favorite place in the building. It smelled of old money and older decisions made her father, Grandfather Jonathan but that wasn't the reason she came. Few minutes later, Adrian showed up and he sat opposite her direction.Adrian looked better than he had in the hospital. Physically, at least the colour was back in his face and he was dressed properly. But his eyes still carried that particular flatness of someone who was moving through days without quite being present in them."You're not listening," Amber said after talking for a while and noticing Adrian just stared at her blank."I'm listening." He muttered "Then repeat what I said."Adrian exhaled, "You want me to leave.""I want you to go," she corrected. "There's a difference….leaving sounds like running but going sounds lik
The days that followed were quite eventful. April went to war with everyone who loved her and it was really surprising. She refused Ava's calls first…after contemplating if she should block the contact, she just decided not to answer her calls. The phone would ring and April would stare at the screen until it stopped, then set the phone face down like that ended anything. Then she refused Lauren's, which was more difficult because Lauren didn't stop after the second try. That was because April moved out of her apartment to her parents mansion. She called and called until April had to pick up and reply, "I don't want to talk right now" before ending the call.April was polite to her mother though and Mrs Sterling tried not to be harsh on her daughter but to calmly understand what was going on. Neither Ava, April nor Lauren told her exactly what the problem was so it was difficult to intervene.Mr Sterling wasn't pleased with the dispute between his daughters but if there was anything h
Ava's phone buzzed on the nightstand. She almost didn't pick it up. The afternoon light was slanting warm and golden through the curtains of the mansion and she was comfortable with her feet tucked beneath her on the bed, her hair loose while she went through her sketches. Then she saw the name on the screen…it was Lauren, so she picked up. "Hey.""Hey." Lauren's voice came but she noticed it was different. "Are you somewhere you can talk?"Ava sat up slightly. "Yeah. What happened?""It's about April."Ava's chest tightened immediately. "What about her?""Nothing bad," Lauren said quickly. "She's fine. She's physically fine. I just…" she paused, "I need you to hear me out before you react, okay?""Lauren…”"Okay. So you know Lucas."Ava raised her brow, "Damien's friend, Lucas.""Yes." Lauren exhaled slowly. "I think…and I say this having watched them myself with my own two eyes…I think April and Lucas are in love with each other."The silence that followed was long."Ava?""I'm here
The same day, Lauren was having a busy day. Her office on the fourteenth floor of Meridian Legal Partners building had a view of the city that she had earned one difficult case at a time. She was mid-sentence on a call when her door opened and Ava walked in, closed it behind her, dropped her bag o
"Too late…too late?"Adrian muttered as he sat with those words like they were stones he couldn't put down. The city below him didn't care. It moved and breathed and hummed with the business of people who had places to be and things to feel, and he sat on his balcony above all of it with an empty g
Outside the Sterling Mansion, the night was unusualy still and it made Livia fill uneasy. Maybe it was her pregnancy hormones or maybe it was the fact that she was worried about her secret being exposed.“Oh God, I hope that doctor doesn't rat me out”. She groaned and held her head.“Can I at least
“I'm her boyfriend” Lucas interrupted while April gasped.“Huh…” Gavin raised his brows but Miss Sterling showed up.“April…I asked you and your friend to get me these carrots thirty minutes ago, what's the delay?” She frowned holding a big basket.“Sorry mom, we were washing them”. April explained
