Chapter 2

Author: Pen Everly
The next morning, I went to school.

In the office, my homeroom teacher pushed a thick stack of documents toward me.

“Lily, this is a full scholarship to Westbridge University.

“There are only a limited number of spots awarded worldwide each year.

“You earned this. I’m incredibly proud of you.”

My teacher looked at me with genuine pride.

I picked up the pen, but my hand hesitated.

“Sir, does the confirmation form have to be signed by a legal guardian?”

He paused.

“Technically, yes.

“But…”

He checked my student records and suddenly smiled.

“I almost forgot. You turned eighteen last week.

“You can sign it yourself.”

My eighteenth birthday.

My fingers tightened around the pen.

Last Wednesday had been my eighteenth birthday.

That day, Chloe said she was craving a cake from a famous bakery across town.

Mom, Dad, and Ryan drove halfway across the city to get it for her.

Callum stayed home and played video games with her.

Not one of them remembered that it was my birthday too.

“Lily?”

My teacher’s voice pulled me back to reality.

“If your family has any concerns, you should still talk it over with them.

“Studying abroad is a big decision, after all.”

I took a deep breath.

Then I signed my name on the last page of the confirmation form.

“There’s nothing to discuss.

“I can make this decision for myself.”

My teacher studied the determination in my eyes and didn’t say anything else.

“All right. I’ll submit the paperwork today.

“The school will help you with your visa and flight arrangements.

“You should be leaving in about two weeks.”

I thanked him and walked out of the office.

The sunlight outside was harsh enough to make my eyes sting.

I found a shady spot beneath a tree and sat down, pulling out my phone.

A red notification dot appeared on my social media feed.

Mom had posted something.

It was a nine-photo collage, and every picture radiated happiness.

There were photos of them walking barefoot along the beach.

Pictures of an extravagant seafood dinner.

And in the final photo, Callum and Chloe were sitting together.

Callum was patiently peeling a shrimp for Chloe.

She smiled sweetly at him.

The caption read:

“The perfect family vacation. As long as Chloe is happy, that’s all that matters.”

Several relatives had already liked and commented on the post.

One of my aunts asked:

“Why didn’t Lily come?”

Mom replied almost immediately.

“Lily’s gotten too wild from growing up in the country. She has no sense of proper behavior.”

“If we’d taken her with us, who knows what trouble she would’ve caused.”

I stared at those words, my fingertips turning cold.

Too wild from growing up in the country.

That was all they thought of me.

They had no idea that back home, I had to wake up before dawn every day to feed the pigs.

They didn’t know that I’d washed clothes in freezing river water during the winter.

And they certainly didn’t know that, desperate to get into a good high school, I’d studied by moonlight every night because we couldn’t afford proper lighting.

I calmly tapped the 'Like' button and closed the app.

Two weeks.

In just two weeks, I’d finally be able to leave this place for good.

When I got home, I started cleaning the house just as Ryan had instructed.

I wiped every corner of the living room until it was spotless.

Then I walked into Chloe’s bedroom.

It was spacious, faced south, and was filled with sunlight.

Her closet was packed with the latest designer clothes.

Her desk was covered with expensive skincare products and collectible figurines.

After mopping the floor, my eyes landed on the nightstand.

A delicate velvet box sat there.

The lid was slightly open, revealing a blue gemstone necklace inside.

It was the eighteenth-birthday gift Callum had given Chloe.

I’d once seen that exact necklace in the notes app on Callum’s phone.

He had labeled it:

“For Lily’s eighteenth birthday.”

But in the end, it was around Chloe’s neck.

Callum’s explanation had been simple.

“Lily, Chloe really likes this necklace.

“You don’t wear jewelry much anyway, so let her have it.

“I’ll get you something even better later.”

I hadn’t thrown a fit.

I hadn’t cried.

I’d simply removed that necklace, which should have been mine, from my heart.

I closed the bedroom door and returned to my tiny storage-room bedroom.

I carefully tucked the confirmation form into the deepest compartment of my backpack.

It was my only path to freedom.

I lay on the hard wooden bed and stared at the ceiling.

If you expect nothing, you can’t be disappointed.

It had taken me three years to finally understand those words.

After the conference ended, they stopped me in the hotel lobby.“Lily…”Mom called my name in a trembling voice and reached out to grab me.I stepped back, avoiding her touch. My expression was cold, devoid of warmth.“Excuse me, do we know each other?”Mom’s hand froze in midair as tears streamed down her face.“Lily, I’m your mother…“Where have you been these past three years? I’ve missed you so much.“We know we were wrong. Please forgive us. Come home with us.”Ryan stepped forward, his eyes red.“Lily, I was an asshole to you. I’m sorry.“Chloe has been sent overseas. You’re the only daughter left in the family now.“Come home. From now on, I’ll do whatever you want.”Dad stood nearby without saying a word, but his eyes were filled with desperation.Watching them cry in front of me, I found the whole thing absurd.“Come home?”I let out a soft laugh, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather.“Three years ago, when I left that house, I stopped havi

Three years later, winter in Westbridge City was bitterly cold, with heavy snow blanketing the city.I sat by the laboratory window, staring at the endless stretch of white outside while holding a cup of hot coffee. The past three years had been good to me.I had received a full scholarship, worked on my advisor’s core research project, and even published two papers in prestigious academic journals.I was no longer the Lily Whitmore who had once lived cautiously in a cramped storage room, constantly watching everyone else's moods.I was now my advisor’s star student, the academic prodigy everyone in my program knew could handle anything. My phone buzzed.A text had come from an unknown number back home.“Lily, it’s snowing in Ravenport. When are you coming back?”It was already the nine-hundred-and-ninety-ninth message like this I had received that month.I didn’t need to guess who it was.Callum.Somehow, over the past three years, he had gotten hold of my new number.Eve

Callum had no idea how he made it back to Ravenport. He locked himself inside his apartment and didn’t leave for three whole days. His mind was filled with Mrs. Parker’s accusations and the note I had left behind.“Callum is the best person in the whole world…”The words played over and over in his mind like a curse. He had once been my light. But later, he had taken that light away from me and given it to Chloe. He thought back to the night before they left for the beach. He had watched as I was left behind. He had watched my suitcase being handed over to Chloe. He had clearly seen the disappointment in my eyes, yet he had still calmly told me,“Be understanding.”He had thought I was just throwing a little tantrum. He had thought that once he came back and sweet-talked me a little, I would forgive him just like I always had.Because I had always been so obedient, so easy to appease. But he had forgotten that even the most obedient person could die inside once their hea

Over the next few days, the Whitmore family was plunged into an unprecedented gloom.Rachel spent night after night unable to sleep, often finding herself standing unconsciously in the empty storage room that had once been Lily’s bedroom.Ryan stopped mentioning anything about me renting a place in Ravenport.Callum, meanwhile, seemed to be going crazy. He used every connection he had to track down the flight records from the past few days. But he found nothing.I had left too decisively, cutting off every possible trail they could use to track me down.“This won’t do. I’m going to the countryside and ask the neighbors.”David finally couldn’t sit still any longer.“Getting all the paperwork done to study abroad is complicated. Someone must have helped her.”That weekend, the entire family, along with Callum, drove back to the countryside. It was the first time in three years that any of them had set foot in the place where I had spent fifteen years of my life. The crumbling

“Not going to Ravenport? Then where could she possibly go?”Ryan scoffed dismissively.“She could barely get into a community college. She doesn’t have much money, either.“Other than going to Ravenport and expecting us to support her, where else could she go? Is she planning to fly to the moon?”Mom nodded, sounding certain.“She’s obviously just throwing a tantrum.“She probably changed her number on purpose to make us worry.“Leave her alone. Let her go hungry for a few days, and she’ll come crawling back on her own.”Chloe bit her lower lip, her eyes turning red again.“This is all my fault…“If I hadn’t insisted on going to the beach, Lily wouldn’t be this angry.“Dad, why don’t you call Lily’s homeroom teacher and ask?“What if something really happened to her?”Dad frowned.Although he had insisted that they shouldn’t bother with her, he still pulled out his phone. He called Lily’s homeroom teacher. The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered.

At eight that evening, the front door of the Hayes family home swung open.Ryan walked in first, pushing two large suitcases.“Finally home. I’m exhausted.”He tossed the suitcases by the entryway and slipped on his house shoes.Mom and Dad followed, helping Chloe inside.Callum came in last, carrying several shopping bags.“Lily!”Ryan called out.“Where are you? Come pour some water. Chloe’s thirsty.”The house was eerily quiet. No one answered.Mom frowned.“Where did that girl run off to this time?“Didn’t we tell her to go to Ravenport and rent an apartment ahead of us? Why hasn’t she even sent us a message?”Chloe sank onto the couch, looking pale.“Mom, is Lily mad at me?“Because I lost her bracelet…“If she’s really angry, I’ll buy her another one tomorrow to make it up to her.”Dad patted her shoulder.“Don’t worry about her. She’s always been stubborn, just like her grandmother.“When she runs out of money in a few days, she’ll come crawling back and apol
