Chapter 3 Artemis' Retort

Author: Anonymous
I sighed. They were probably talking about me. The incident had already passed, but my body still had not been found. Then again, I was devoured by sharks. Of course they could not find me.

Queenie used her authority to shut down the reporter's question. Everyone knew she was one of the few female captains in the nation. Her skill was highly respected, and Queenie was proud of her position as captain.

While the interview was still going on, I drifted around the company and saw Zach waiting on the first floor. He was holding a bouquet of roses, standing in front of the reception like a peacock.

I looked down and sighed. This guy did not know Queenie was allergic to roses. That was why I always bought baby's breath for every single important day. Back then, Zach had laughed at me for not knowing the first thing about romance.

Now I could mock him for never understanding Queenie, but I underestimated how much Queenie loved him. She took the roses despite the itchiness. Though spots of rashes were appearing on her face, she still held the bouquet tightly in her embrace.

The roses got a lot of attention, and her colleagues said she was popular with men. After all, I had always picked her up from work, and now a handsome man had come to bring her flowers.

The moment someone mentioned my name, Queenie shot that person an icy glare. Her lips curled downward. "Like I wanted him to! Don't put us in the same sentence. I would never fall for a petty man who would risk someone else's life just to save himself."

Something invisible slammed into my heart. So that was how she saw me.

Zach put an arm around Queenie, looking all blissful. If I had not been Queenie's husband, perhaps I would have given them my blessing.

One of our colleagues sighed and said it was a shame my long courtship ended in failure.

Queenie heard that and swiveled around. "What are you pitying a fake, petty man for? If I ever fell for someone like him, I'd rather die!"

Every word she said sliced through what remained of my heart.

The company was having its third anniversary celebration. Queenie brought Zach to the team building event as well. Everyone raised a toast for the future of the company. When they wished all the captains and crew safe sailings every single time, someone mentioned me.

"I still haven't seen Mr. Dutchman. Did something happen? Can anyone call him?"

Artemis Hengefort, my junior, volunteered to call me. But no one picked up.

I watched them trying and trying to call, and I sighed. Unless this was some kind of fantasy world, the dead could not answer phones.

After a few failed attempts, Artemis suggested that Queenie make the call. She said I would never miss Queenie's calls.

Queenie's face fell, but with everyone watching, she could not refuse. Suppressing her anger, she dialed my number.

The phone kept ringing. With each unanswered beep, her irritation grew. Finally, she snapped, "I don't care if he doesn't show up. This show can still go on without him! I hope he never comes! He annoys me!"

I held back the urge to start a big fight. There was no point fighting with her, not when I was already dead. I died in the deep blue on our anniversary.

Artemis shot up from her seat and retorted, "How can you say that about him? Do you even have a heart? He gave you the chance to escape that tsunami, and you left him behind while taking your lover with you. And you still call yourself his wife?"

That caught everyone's attention. All eyes turned toward Queenie, waiting for her answer. Beside her was Zach. Queenie glanced at him, then stood up as well.

"That's nonsense! He didn't need my saving, not when he's a rank one seafarer! He just hates Zach. I know him too well!"

Artemis sneered. "You know him? You don't even know who saved you in the Southern Sea. You don't know who dragged you back to shore. He nearly lost his life saving you. If help had come any later, he might never have woken up. He has thalassophobia. Did you know that? No, of course you didn't. You were busy flirting with your lover! I was the one who took care of him!"

At first, Queenie only scoffed at Artemis, but slowly, that arrogance turned into disbelief. "What?"

Her voice trembled faintly. "He has thalassophobia?"

Zach had no intention of letting Queenie bring up the past. He shoved her down to the ground. But that was not the answer Queenie wanted. She pressed on, "You talked me into that vacation for the insurance payout, didn't you? You knew Jonathan couldn't go out to sea anymore! You wanted to kill him, didn't you?" Her voice came out as a roar."Yeah, I did it for money. So what? That's what everyone does! I did nothing wrong!" Zach shoved the empty bottles on his coffee table. The air was thick with the stench of tobacco and alcohol."You'd send Jonathan to his death for money? I can't believe you're so… so evil! He's dead now! Happy?"Zach closed in on Queenie. He snarled, "If you miss him so much, I can send you to where he is! Either give me the money or die!"He grabbed a white plastic bottle from a room and took the cap off, then he splashed the liquid everywhere. My gut told me that it was petrol.Zach had lost his mind. I wanted to grab Queenie and force her to run, but I cou

The house had been decorated entirely in black and white. My portrait sat in the corner of the living room, surrounded by flowers and bottles of alcohol. She thought I loved liquor. But I hated alcohol with everything in me. My father died of an alcohol-induced heart failure. After Zach came home, Queenie was distant, and she rarely came home. I drank my problems away when I had no work, all in an attempt to numb myself. One time, she came home to the floor filled with wine bottles. She cursed me and said I was spineless.I thought she was finally changing her mind and coming back to me, but she was only back to take her stuff. She started packing up, tucking more and more of her stuff into her suitcase. Everything about her that was in our house was slowly disappearing.I tugged on her, pleading with her to stay, but she said, "Zach's afraid to be alone at night if I weren't there. I need to be there for him."Drunk, I slapped her. "You're my wife!" I said furiously. "What are y

That did her in. Queenie's tears began to fall. Her voice cracked, but she said, "Okay."I would have forgotten about the insurance if not for that call. A while back, some insurance agents had come to our company to promote their plans. Since my line of work was dangerous, I bought three policies without telling Queenie. If anything ever happened to me, Queenie would be left alone. I wanted her to live comfortably even after I was gone.Queenie was staring at the files on the table. She was the beneficiary for the plans, and the sum amounted to four million. She suddenly turned around and wiped her tears. A staff member handed her a glass of lemon water.I wondered if she would think of me when she drank it. I wondered if she would remember the honey lemon water I always made for her. Before she left, the staff member told her to get my death certificate and close my accounts. If she closed those accounts, that meant all my ties to her would be severed. I wondered if that made

Queenie's crying earned the sympathy of many people around her. They told her that she had to keep moving forward. A commotion came from outside the precinct. My mother had traveled all the way from the farmlands in my hometown. She had not even had time to change out of her work clothes. When she saw Queenie crying on the ground, the rims of my poor old mother's eyes turned red. She took unsteady steps toward the covered tray and reached out with trembling hands. The moment she saw what lay beneath the white cloth, her strength gave out.Queenie quickly held her up. "Get an ambulance, now!"My mother eventually woke up, but she still could not believe I was dead. She grabbed Queenie's hand and demanded, "Where's my son? He told me he was sailing with you! Tell me he's not back yet, Queenie! Tell me!"She kept telling herself, "That must be it. He's still busy at work. That must be." Then she nodded to herself for reassurance. She wanted to call me, but she did not have the courage

Queenie was shivering. She did not want to believe this. "He never told me that!"I did, and I did it more than once. I said so when she suggested sailing with Zach. I said it when she abandoned me and told me to swim back. She simply never believed me.Zach stood up and held Queenie's hand to comfort her. "It's alright. It'll be fine. Nothing happened to him last time."Queenie raised her head and muttered to herself, "That's right. He said he had depression and wanted to die, but he still survived!"She remembered my mentioning of the depression. What a surprise. It was right after I developed thalassophobia. I found out I could not focus. Eventually, I was diagnosed with depression. After some deliberation, I decided to tell Queenie.I thought that would bring her back to me. I thought she would care. But she only looked at me coldly. "You'll do anything to get my attention, won't you? Depression? You don't look depressed. At least make a believable lie! Maybe tell me you're dy
