Chapter 2

Author: Wheat Grain
Mark walked aimlessly down the street. After a while, a honk sounded beside him, and a car pulled up in front of him.

Claire stepped out of the car and asked, “Why aren’t your calls going through?”

Mark glanced at his phone. “Dead battery.”

“Get in,” she said, asking no further questions.

“Have you been waiting long? I really had something urgent to deal with today,” she continued. “I don’t have any surgeries scheduled tomorrow morning, so I’ll go with you to get married then.”

Mark looked out the window at the receding streetscape as he replied, “It’s fine.”

Claire seemed to recall something. “Oh, right, tomorrow is Saturday. Let’s make it another time then. The wedding is still a while away, anyway.”

“Did you go to the amusement park?” Mark couldn’t help but ask, still unwilling to let it go.

“Did you see Ryan’s Instagram post? Then you should understand. He just returned to the country, and it’s very difficult for a man to take care of a child alone.”

When she mentioned Ryan, her face softened with a gentleness he had never seen before.

“You met Ryan the day he came back, didn’t you? He’s a bright, cheerful, and slightly clumsy child in a man’s body. Once you get to know him better, you’ll like him.”

Mark found it ironic. Ryan was two years older than him and had a four-year-old child, yet in her eyes, he was still just an innocent college friend.

Lost in her memories, Claire continued on her own, “Back in college, Ryan and I found an injured stray dog, and he felt so sorry for it. We eventually adopted that dog together, but less than a year later, the dog died. It was the first time I saw him, usually so cheerful and talkative, with bloodshot eyes, saying he would never get a pet dog again. I’m surprised he can take care of a child so well now.”

Listening to her count another man’s stories like treasured memories, Mark quietly clenched his fists at his sides.

“Stop talking,” he interrupted her. “I don’t want to hear it.”

Claire glanced at him, looking somewhat surprised. “What’s wrong? Are you upset?”

“Yes. Let’s call off the wedding.”

After a moment, Claire nodded. “That’s fine, too. I’m not too fond of formal affairs anyway. How about a destination wedding instead? Let’s go to the Swiss Valley. Ryan said it has nice scenery and it’s great for skiing.”

Ryan, again.

Mark’s heart sank. “Claire, let’s break up. I’ll step aside so you can be with Ryan.”

“Mark.” Claire’s expression turned serious. “Don’t make groundless assumptions about Ryan. I only see him as a friend. Can’t you be a little understanding of how hard it is for a man to raise a kid alone? You know me: once the wedding date is set, it won’t change. As a man, you should be more mature about it.

“Besides,” she glanced at him as she continued, “we’ve been together for six years. Can you bear to leave me?”

Mark felt a dull ache in his chest.

Because he had witnessed the pain his father suffered after his mother’s betrayal, he had developed a distrust of relationships. Yet, he found himself hopelessly in love with Claire, a woman of unwavering principles.

He was afraid of following in his father’s footsteps, but just like his father, he was willing to give up everything for the person he loved. For her sake, he took on all the household chores, took care of her daily necessities, handled every little detail, and even gave up the opportunity to go abroad for further studies.

That was why she was so sure he would be forgiving and understanding. In fact, it made her even more certain that after six years of devotion, he simply could not leave her.

To think he believed she was the exact opposite of his mother, and that she would never betray him. He had forgotten that emotional infidelity was betrayal too.

…

Just then, Claire’s phone rang.

She picked up, and her voice instantly softened. “Ryan, what’s wrong?”

“Claire, I’m at a bar. Do you want to come hang out?”

Claire had always detested noisy places like bars. Yet, she agreed without a second thought.

“Okay, I’ll be right there.”

After hanging up, she turned the steering wheel sharply and pulled over to the side of the road.

“Mark, take a cab back. Ryan is at a bar, so I’m going to check on him.”

Mark got out of the car, but before he could say a word, the car sped off into the distance.

She was worried about Ryan, but she forgot that his phone was dead. She also forgot that a heavy rainstorm was coming.

Thunder crackled in the sky, and the cold rain instantly drenched him, making it impossible to distinguish the rain on his face from his tears. Just like that, he walked in the heavy rain all night, and his heart died right along with it.

When dawn broke, he dragged his soaked body back home. The moment he opened the door, he saw Claire—who never cooked—wearing an apron and busy in the kitchen.

Seeing his disheveled state, she looked a little surprised. “Why are you so soaked? You didn’t come home all night and didn’t even bother to call.”

Just then, a young child holding his limited-edition action figure ran out from the master bedroom and slammed right into him.

“Leo!” Ryan ran out of the master bedroom right behind the boy and blurted, “Why do you always run right up to all that dirt?”

Three years later, in the world of architectural design, Mark’s name was known to virtually everyone. He brilliantly integrated concepts of tailoring into modern architectural design, turning every piece of his work into a masterpiece. Finally, using the money he had earned himself, he bought back his old family home that Greg had left behind. On the day he received the title deed, he sat alone in the house, remaining there from daylight until darkness fell. Iris did not rush him. She waited quietly outside the door and only stepped forward when he opened it.“Let’s go home.” She took his hand, her gesture natural.Over the past three years, they had come together smoothly and effortlessly. There was no tumultuous drama or agonizing heartbreak. When he stayed up all night drafting blueprints, she would prepare midnight snacks and a warm blanket for him; before her court trials, he would organize her legal documents for her.He never interfered with any of her decisions, and she

Soon, the day of the court trial arrived. Claire stood in the courtroom with disheveled hair and sunken eyes, looking haggard. Meanwhile, Ryan was led in under police custody, his hands bound in handcuffs, stripped of his former glory. The judge’s voice echoed throughout the courtroom.“In the medical malpractice suit, the court finds the defendant, Claire Baker, liable for gross negligence during treatment, which delayed the patient’s optimal window for emergency care and directly contributed to the patient’s death.“The verdict is as follows: The defendant, Claire Baker, must issue a public apology to the plaintiff, Mark Stevenson, through major city media outlets, and jointly pay damages to the plaintiff totaling one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.“Furthermore, the court recommends the immediate revocation of Claire Baker's medical license by the state board, and she is permanently banned from practicing medicine.”Hearing that she was permanently banned from practicing m

Claire had no idea how she made it back to her rented apartment. She picked up her phone, her thumb hovering over Mark’s contact. After a long pause, she typed out a message to him.[We need to talk.]The message was sent, but it showed as undelivered. She stared at the screen as the minutes ticked away, stubbornly typing out another message.[Mark, let’s meet up.]Still undelivered.Tears dripped onto the screen, yet she could not stop sending messages that Mark would never receive.[Mark, I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay? I’m begging you… Mark, I’m sorry. Mark, I love you…]… Meanwhile, Mark was sitting in front of his computer, buried in work. Winning first place in that architectural design competition had earned him a collaboration offer from a major company. To prepare for the collaboration, he worked late into the night every day. Though exhausted, he had never felt more fulfilled. After pulling another all-nighter, he checked the time and suddenly remembered his

Claire offered no defence because there was nothing she could say to defend herself. In the end, she picked up a pen and signed her name on the suspension notice. That very afternoon, as the victim’s next of kin, Mark accepted an exclusive media interview. In front of the camera, he recounted everything from his father’s sudden illness to his passing. He laid the facts bare, using them to strip away Claire’s hypocritical facade of being ‘principled.’“A doctor who ignores hospital regulations, abandons patients, and shows total disregard for a person’s life all for the sake of her friend from college…” Mark looked directly into the camera, enunciating every single word. “She should never be a doctor.”Back home, Claire sat watching TV, the light flickering across her face. Looking at Mark on the screen, she could not tell whether what she felt was guilt or regret. All she knew was that her chest throbbed with a pain so intense she could barely breathe.Right on the heels of her sus

Claire’s mind went blank as a buzzing sound filled her ears.Back then, Ryan had brought a stack of documents for her to sign, claiming they were just guarantee agreements for a project. It never struck her that Ryan, whom she always saw as bright, cheerful, and harmless, would deceive her. Her trust in him was the reason she did not read the contents of the documents. She could not believe he was already laying a trap for her at that time and dragging her deeper into it.Claire raised her head, a tempest of rage burning within her. She felt like the ultimate joke. For the sake of that man, she had broken every one of her principles, repeatedly hurt Mark, and indirectly caused Greg’s death…For him, she had thrown away the most precious things in her life, only to be met with such a cruel and heartless ending.“Get out.”The smile on Ryan’s face stiffened for a second, but he quickly restored his arrogant, fearless composure.“Claire, think this through carefully.” He adjusted

Claire’s head throbbed even harder from all his noise. She pressed her hands to her temples and asked, her voice raspy, “What on earth happened?”“I don’t know either…” Ryan was on the verge of a total meltdown. “Now that the cash flow has dried up and the project is halted, they’re still demanding I pay them back! Claire, I need a huge sum of money to unfreeze my assets. Otherwise, I’m ruined, and I’ll have to go to prison! Claire, can you please help me?”An indescribable sense of exhaustion and disgust welled up in Claire.“Ryan, I don’t have any money left. All my money went to you. My house and my car are both mortgaged. I don’t have a single cent.”She even had to ask her friends for a loan just to gather the money she needed to pay Mark back. Where would she get any more money? As if he had not heard her, Ryan stared at her in disbelief. Then, a thought came to him, and he blurted out, “Right, Claire, you’re the hospital director! The hospital definitely has emergency res
