Chapter 1

Penulis: Reneemoon
Her scream pierced the suffocating haze of my drowning like a needle of ice.

My eyes flew open, and I looked toward the lake, where a noisy crowd had gathered.

"Help me! Help..."

Layla was flailing in the water. The instant our eyes met, a flicker of satisfaction crossed hers.

In my past life, I'd fallen for that desperate act without a second thought, jumped in, pulled her out, and given her CPR.

Three days later, she went live in tears, claiming I "pushed her in" and "tried to assault her."

She sobbed and held up chat screenshots. "He threatened me. He said if I didn't sleep with him, he'd post photos of him kissing me on a porn site... I can't live like this!"

The internet exploded.

People edited my photos with captions like "Rapist scum, die" and "Doxx his whole family," then spread them across every platform.

Michael Carter, the dean, looked conflicted as he tossed an expulsion notice at me. "The damage is too severe. For the university's reputation..."

I dragged my suitcase off campus in a daze, only to get a call from a neighbor back home whose voice shook with tears.

"Owen... your parents... they were let go from their jobs! Both of them are so depressed, they say they can't face anyone anymore..."

The phone slipped from my hand. The world went silent.

I walked back to that lake. The cold wrapped around me once more.

As consciousness faded, the last thing I saw was Layla's smiling face on my phone, her livestream showing over a hundred thousand viewers.

"Thank you all for helping me through the darkness... I'll carry your love with me and live my best life!"

"Owen! Save me! Please!"

The desperate cry yanked me out of the nightmare of my past life.

Layla was still "struggling" in the water, eyes locked on me, silently urging me to act.

I looked at her, and a cold smile slowly spread across my face.

Then, under the stunned gaze of everyone watching, I turned and walked away.

Behind me came her cracking scream and the panicked sounds of choking on water.

But I barely made it a few steps before a figure charged at me from the side, nearly knocking me into the bushes.

I looked up. It was my roommate, Cole Miller.

He'd pinched every penny to buy Layla one designer bag after another, yet she'd never even let him hold her hand. Everyone on campus knew him for it.

"Owen! Are you even human?!" He was right in my face, jabbing his finger so close it nearly poked my nose. "Everyone knows you're the star of the swim team! A classmate is fighting for her life and you just walk away?"

Whispers rippled through the crowd.

I brushed off my clothes, unfazed.

"So because I'm a good swimmer, I'm obligated to jump in? You're pre-med too. You know how terrifyingly strong drowning people can become when they're fighting to survive.

"If she grabs me and pulls me under, who takes responsibility then?" My gaze swept across the crowd before settling on Cole. "Sorry, but I value my life. If you want to help her, call a professional."

I turned to leave.

Cole's eyes went red with rage. He shoved me hard back toward the shore.

"Cut the act! When the academic building caught fire, you dove into the lake and pulled out a bunch of students who'd jumped in. That made you the big hero and got you a scholarship! Why weren't you scared of dying then?

"Oh, I get it now. When there's nothing in it for you, you'll just stand there and watch Layla drown! What a hypocrite!"

Countless stares dug into my back like nails.

I gave a thin smile and spoke coolly.

"Save someone and I'm a hero. Don't, and I'm the villain.

"Since you're so righteous, why don't you jump in and save her yourself?"

Cole and Layla went slack with shock. All the fight drained out of them as the officers pushed them through the door.Ryan came over to me with a wicked grin."How about that? Good thing your buddy came to save you, or the whole internet would be tearing you apart right now!"I laughed and slung an arm around each of them."All right, pizza and burgers tonight. My treat!"Evan grinned wide and thumped me on the chest. After everything blew over, life went back to normal.Well, not exactly normal. I'd opened a social media account, and people had been flocking to follow me. I checked after class, and it had already hit a hundred thousand followers.[Smart and hot? Layla snapped and lunged for my face, nails out."You bastard! I worked so hard for everything I have! Who the hell are you to take it from me!"Detective Harris grabbed her by the collar and pinned her back in her chair, voice dead serious."Ms. Brooks, I strongly advise you not to try anything. One more move and we will use physical restraint!"Layla's lips trembled. Then she whipped her finger toward Cole."Don't... don't arrest me! It was him! He forced me into all of it! He planned the whole thing and beat me whenever I refused. I had no choice!""What? You bitch!" Cole twisted around and roared right back. "Detective, don't listen to her lies! She came to me first. She said that since Owen and I already didn't get along, I should help her frame him..."She even said if the views blew up, she'd split the money with me fifty-fifty! I've still got the recording of her bribing me on my phone!""What?! You've been scheming against me this whole time?!"Layla completely lost it. She th

Officers moved in immediately, pinning them down. Handcuffs clicked shut around their wrists."Wait! It's fake! It's all fabricated!" Cole was losing it, his cuffs clanking. "He used AI to fake it! They're framing us!""That's... that's right! Owen's had it out for me all along. This whole thing was his sick revenge plot!" Layla shrieked."Framed? Revenge?" I let out a cold laugh. "Even now, you're still twisting the truth?"Cole, if you really want to prove your innocence, why don't you let forensics swab under your fingernails for traces of the sedative? Or better yet, let's pull the lab's checkout log for that chemical."Cole's pupils shrank to pinpoints. His lips trembled, but no words came out."Layla, your manager, Dana Pierce, was already plotting to frame me back during the lake incident, wasn't that right? And the hotel surveillance was hacked by someone working for your management company!"Layla was shaking violently now, her nails digging into her palms.I looked her dead i

Evan clenched his fists, anger threading through his voice."When I got Owen's shared location and rushed to the hotel, I saw them hauling him inside."I followed them. While they were stripping him and dumping him on the bed, then leaving to get their camera equipment, I climbed through the hallway window into the room, threw his jacket over him, and carried him out."He paused here and took a deep breath."But right as I reached the stairwell, I heard them coming back. There was no time. I stashed Owen in a storage room, then... quickly changed into his clothes and got back on that bed."What I didn't expect was that they drugged me again with the cloth, just to be safe. In the last second before I blacked out, the only thing I managed to do was hit the record button on the voice recorder hidden in my pocket."The room held its breath. You could've heard a pin drop.Detective Harris nodded slowly, but confusion still clouded his face."So, in trying to collect evidence against them,

Layla's voice nearly cracked in half. The livestream chat went berserk.[Holy crap, are they twins?][Wait, did the brother come to take the fall for him?][This whole case is bizarre enough to be AI-generated. Since coming back, this was the first time I'd seen Evan.In my past life, part of the reason I'd jumped into that lake was to keep from dragging him down with me.Our parents had already fallen into depression. If Evan also had a brother branded a rapist, the bright future he deserved would be ruined because of me.Evan turned to Detective Harris with a calm smile."Detective, the person at the hotel at the time of the incident was not my brother."It was me."Shock flashed in Detective Harris's eyes, nearly cracking his professional calm."What? How is that possible? Are you telling me you anticipated all of this?"Evan looked my way. Seeing the encouragement in my

He gave me the slightest nod, then slapped a folder down on the table."This is proof that Owen was in the dorm with me!"Layla and Cole froze. When they saw what was in the folder, their eyes went wide.It was... a screenshot of an online match history showing Ryan and me playing together."What the hell is this? You're trying to pass off a game screenshot as evidence?" Cole barked, but there was an involuntary tremor in his voice.Ryan shrugged."This is the clearest proof that Owen had no time to commit the crime. We were both playing in the same live match."If you don't believe me, check the timestamp in the top right corner."Everyone's eyes shot to the corner. They all went still.3:05 p.m.!"Still not convinced? Keep going."
