Three weeks passed like a dream.

Isabella stood in the bathroom of Damien's penthouse, her hands trembling around the small plastic stick, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure the entire building could hear it. Two pink lines. Clear as day. Impossible to mistake.

She was pregnant.

The word echoed in her mind, bouncing off the walls of her consciousness, refusing to settle. Pregnant. She was going to have a baby. Damien's baby. The man she loved more than she had ever thought possible.

The hospital room was quiet, the only sound the steady beep of the monitors tracking Damien's vitals.Isabella sat beside his bed, her hand in his, watching him sleep. The doctors had run tests, taken blood, and asked questions she couldn't answer. They said he was malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from the effects of prolonged poisoning. They said he was lucky to be alive.Genevieve was in custody. The FBI had seized her assets, frozen her accounts, and begun the process of dismantling the conspiracy she had built. The board members who had supported her were under investigation. The company was in chaos. But none of that mattered right now.All that mattered was the man in the bed."Isabella." Damien's voice was weak, barely a whisper. "You're still here.""I'm still here." She squeezed his hand. "I'm not going anywhere."He smiled a ghost of the smile she remembered. "I dreamed you left. I dreamed I was alone.""It was just a dream." She pressed his hand against her stomach.

New York was exactly as she remembered and completely different.Isabella stood at the window of David's car, watching the city blur past, her hand pressed against her stomach. The baby had been restless all morning, kicking and turning, as if sensing the turmoil in her heart. She had spent weeks running from this place and had built a new life in Boston, a quiet existence of diners and boarding houses and anonymity. Now she is back.David glanced at her from the driver's seat. "Are you sure about this?""No." Isabella's voice was steady. "But I need to see him.""Damien isn't the same man you left. Genevieve has been... influencing him. Isolating him. He barely talks to anyone anymore.""What do you mean?"David's jaw tightened. "He's been having episodes. Blackouts, maybe, or something else. He'll forget entire conversations. Show up at places with no memory of how he got there. Genevieve says it's stress, but I think " He stopped, his hands gripping the wheel."You think what?""I

The bus station was nearly empty at three in the morning.Isabella sat on a plastic bench, her small bag clutched in her lap, her eyes fixed on the departure board. The ticket in her hand read Boston. It was as far as she could afford far enough to disappear, close enough to reach her mother's new facility in Vermont. She had called ahead and made arrangements for everyone who asked where she was going. No one knew. No one would find her."Isabella?"She looked up, her heart lurching. A woman stood a few feet away, with young, brown hair, familiar eyes. It took her a moment to recognize her."Lily?" Isabella's voice cracked. "What are you doing here?"Lily had been her neighbor in the building she'd shared with Jonathan. They hadn't been close, but they had been friendly, smiling in the hallway, watering each other's plants, occasionally sharing a cup of coffee."I saw you on the news," Lily said, sitting beside her. "The press is camped outside your building. They're saying you were

The week that followed was the happiest of Isabella's life.Damien kept his promise. He walked away from Thorn Enterprises, signing over his shares to a trust, severing ties with the board that had tried to destroy him. He spent his days with Isabella cooking, walking through the city, and talking about the future. He spent his nights with his hands on her stomach, whispering promises to the baby growing inside her.She had never seen him so peaceful. So free. She had never loved him more."We should get married," he said one morning, over coffee and toast. "Before the baby comes."Isabella's heart soared. "Are you asking me?""I'm telling you." He smiled, setting down his mug. "I'm going to marry you, Isabella Davenport. Whether you like it or not.""I like it." She laughed, tears streaming down her face. "I like it very much."He pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply. "Then it's settled. We'll go to the city hall tomorrow. No family, no press, no complications. Just us.""Jus

The drive to the Thorn estate was silent.Isabella sat beside Damien in the back of the town car, her hand in his, her mind racing. He had told her everything on the way about his grandfather's test, about Helena's betrayal, about the lies that had been woven to tear them apart. She wanted to believe him. I needed to believe him.But trust was a fragile thing, and hers had been shattered too many times."Are you ready?" Damien asked as the car pulled up the long driveway."No." She looked at the mansion looming before them, its windows dark, its silhouette sharp against the starless sky. "But I need to hear it from him."Damien nodded, squeezing her hand. Together, they walked through the front doors, past the portraits of Thorn ancestors who stared down at them with cold, assessing eyes.Alexander was waiting in his study. The old man sat by the fire, a blanket across his lap, his face pale and drawn. He looked smaller than Isabella remembered diminished, somehow, by the weight of hi

The penthouse felt like a prison.Isabella moved through the rooms like a ghost, packing her things when Damien was at work, hiding them in the guest room closet where he never looked. She had stopped sleeping. Couldn't eat. Couldn't think about anything except the recording Helena had played for her."Get rid of it. Make her get rid of it. Or do it yourself."Genevieve's voice was cold and sharp. Damien's response, barely a whisper: "I'll handle it."She had trusted him. Had believed him when he said he wanted the baby, wanted a future with her, wanted to be better than his father and his grandfather and everyone who had come before. It had all been a lie."Isabella?" Damien's voice came from the doorway. She turned, forcing a smile she didn't feel."Hey. You're home early.""Meetings ended sooner than expected." He crossed the room, his hands finding her waist. "You look tired. Have you been sleeping?""Not really. The baby keeps me up."His hand moved to her stomach, resting there
