Chapter 1

I pushed open the door to the private dining room and found a man in a black jacket waiting inside.

He had pleasant features, an average build, and the polished, dependable look people stereotypically associated with government workers—the kind of steady, high-quality catch on the blind date market.

By the time I came back to myself, Kaleb Duffy was already on his feet, pulling out my chair like a perfect gentleman. Once we were seated, he got straight to the point and began introducing himself.

He was twenty-eight, held a management position at a publicly traded company, owned a luxury condo downtown, drove a nice car, and had been in two serious relationships.

On paper, everything about him was just right.

I listened quietly the whole time, yet an inexplicable sense of boredom welled up inside me, probably because I hadn't wanted to come in the first place.

Before the holidays, Isabel Calloway, my mother, had constantly nagged me about finding a boyfriend. When she realized nagging wasn't working, she started sending me the contact information of every eligible bachelor she could find.

Trying to avoid being set up, I'd finally said, "I like someone like Diego. Mom, if you can find a guy who's on his level, I'll go."

She'd laughed and told me I was aiming way above my league.

But then she actually went and found one, which was why I had no choice but to show up.

Aside from not being as handsome as Diego, Kaleb, who was sitting across from me, was his equal in almost every other way.

Just then, my phone buzzed.

Diego: [Still having dinner with your friends? I'm almost done here. It's snowing outside, so I'll drive you home.]

I replied curtly: [No need.]

Then I typed: [I'm on a date.]

Before I could hit "send", Kaleb's gentle, hesitant voice interrupted me. "Ms. Calloway, have I done something to make a bad first impression?"

He had probably noticed how distracted I was.

I froze for a second before realizing how rude I'd been. "I'm sorry."

Without making a fuss, Kaleb poured me a cup of hot tea and smoothly let the awkward moment pass.

"Would you mind telling me a little about yourself?"

I wrapped both hands around the warm cup.

"I'm a freelancer. I own my home. My education is pretty average, and, well... you can judge my looks for yourself. I was also in a five-year relationship, and I'm still not completely untangled from my ex.

"I'm sorry for wasting your time."

The truth was, I couldn't even define what Diego and I were anymore.

Childhood friends.

Lovers.

Friends.

None of those labels came close to describing whatever we had become.

Kaleb was visibly stunned. The matchmaker had clearly painted a very different picture of me.

Just as the silence turned uncomfortable, his phone rang. He answered, apologized, claimed something urgent had come up, and hurried off.

I didn't have much of an appetite. After absentmindedly sipping my tea a couple of times, I went to the front desk to pay, only to discover Kaleb had already taken care of the bill.

When I stepped outside, the freezing wind and snow slammed into my face like shards of ice.

Remembering Diego's text, I found myself lingering outside the restaurant. Then I quietly lit a cigarette.

I didn't actually like smoking. The smell was harsh, and the smoke always made me cough. But whenever my emotions were in a knot, one cigarette somehow helped.

I hadn't even finished it before Diego walked out with a young, beautiful woman at his side. They chatted and laughed as they strolled through the snow. The scarf I'd knitted for him with my own hands was wrapped snugly around her neck.

The moment he saw me, Diego snapped back to his senses.

"I've got to go. Let's talk another time."

Ellie Brooks pulled the scarf higher over the lower half of her face. She glanced at me without drawing attention to it before speaking in a muffled voice, "Diego, the snow's really coming down. It'll probably be hard to get a ride."

Unfortunately, Diego completely missed what she was really saying. He shrugged off his coat, draped it over my head, and hurried toward the parking lot with me through the driving snow.

Not long after, Linda called too. The moment I answered, she started berating me."Gemma, what on earth did you do to Diego? Why can't he get over you? But let me make one thing perfectly clear. Even if he's determined to be with you, I will never approve of this relationship."I didn't hang up. Instead, I answered coldly, "Diego's doing this to himself. I've told him over and over that we're done. If he refuses to accept it, that's not my problem."Then I ended the call. The day Diego stopped me outside my building, expecting me to be happy about what he'd done, I was on my way out of Davenport. He looked at me with barely contained excitement."So, are you still mad? Everyone knows about us now. It doesn't matter if my mom disagrees anymore. Gemma, love is something between two people."A wave of irritation rose inside me. I couldn't hold it back."What the hell is wrong with you, Diego? We've been broken up for weeks. You choose now to make us public? Are you trying to disgus

The next few days passed quietly. Then, on the third day, my mom stopped me. She hesitated for a long moment before finally asking, "Gemma, tell me the truth. Were you really dating Diego?"I froze. Frowning, I asked instinctively, "Who told you?"Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.Linda stood outside. For the first time, she dropped the kind, affectionate mask she'd always worn around me."Gemma, haven't I always treated you well? I've loved you like my own daughter since you were little. And this is how you repay me? How could you date Diego? What makes you think you're good enough for Diego?"I don't know what kind of spell you've cast on him, but you're ending this relationship today."My mom didn't hesitate for a second. "Why exactly is Gemma not good enough for Diego? Sure, Diego's accomplished. But Gemma isn't lacking either. For all you know, he was the one chasing her."Warmth spread through my chest. Before the argument could spiral any further, I stepped in

"Do you really think he’s in love with you? Look at yourself. You went to a state school. You don't come from money. Who besides me would ever genuinely want you?"And after spending five years sleeping with me without even the slightest commitment, do you honestly think Kaleb would still want you if he found out?"Rage exploded inside me. My hands shook so violently I couldn't control them anymore. Before I knew it, I'd slapped him across the face. "Diego, you're disgusting."He pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek where I'd hit him. Then he laughed. "Am I wrong? Gemma, you're this upset because I hit a nerve, didn't I?"I closed my eyes. A wave of grief crashed over me. When I opened them again, tears spilled down my face, shattering the calm I'd been clinging to."I regret it, Diego. I regret loving you for so many years.I regret ever choosing to be with you."My decision to leave had nothing to do with Kaleb. I walked away because I'd finally run out of disappo

As if showing me off was the whole point, Ellie smiled at me. "Gemma, is this the blind date Linda introduced you to? You two look great together."As she spoke, she slipped her arm through Diego's and beamed up at him. "Don't you think so, Diego?"His eyes lingered on my face for a brief moment before a smile tugged at his lips. "Looks-wise, they're a pretty good match."The implication couldn't have been clearer: Kaleb and I were both painfully ordinary.Ellie burst into laughter, making no effort to hide the contempt in her eyes as she looked us over.I smiled right back. "You two make a great match too."Her eyes lit up with amusement. "Oh? In what way? Although I think Diego and I are pretty compatible in every way."The smile on my lips widened. "A scumbag and a homewrecker. You were made for each other."Ellie's smile froze. A second later, her face twisted with anger, all pretense gone. "What the hell is wrong with you, Gemma?!"I let out a cold laugh. "Who started thi

Diego’s expression was grim. "The roads are slick. I'll drive you home."I didn't argue."Thanks," I murmured. The drive passed in silence. When we reached my building, I was about to get out when he suddenly called my name. His face was half-hidden beneath the shadow of the umbrella, making it impossible to read his expression."Gemma, is there something you want to say to me?"Like what? Ask him about Ellie? Demand to know why he'd refused to make our relationship public? Or explain that Kaleb and I had only met twice?I'd already spent five years asking the first two questions without ever getting the answers I wanted. As for the last one, I didn't owe him an explanation.Snow drifted quietly between us as we stood there in silence. Finally, Diego spoke again, "So you're really happy with the guy my mom introduced you to? You do remember we haven't broken up."And honestly, after being with someone like me, do you really think you could fall for an ordinary guy? I'm not t

Diego frowned. "Is that really why you're ending it?"I looked at him without a trace of emotion. "Isn't that enough?"The truth was, he'd heard every word of that conversation. He just didn't think his mother had done anything wrong. As far as he was concerned, she'd done nothing wrong. Everything she'd said was true, and I knew he'd heard it.I spent the next two weeks keeping my distance, partly because I wanted to see what he would do, and partly because I still loved him. The little boy I'd spotted across a crowd all those years ago had somehow kept my heart ever since. That day, we parted on bad terms. Neither of us reached out afterward.Still, I believed every relationship deserved a proper goodbye. So I texted him that we were over. That same afternoon, he got on a plane and showed up on my campus that afternoon.I stared at him in shock.Without saying a word, he pulled me into his arms and held me tight. His voice was hoarse as he whispered against my ear, "Gemma, y
