Chapter 2

Author: Cinderwing
"Wait, what did you just say? Mark who? How do I not remember that at all?"

Silas’ gaze narrowed as he stared hard at me, trying to read my expression to figure out if I was lying or telling the truth.

The very next second, I leaned against his shoulder and pretended to violently throw up.

Ten minutes later, we headed over to a local gym and locker room down the street.

Silas offered to help me inside, but I just sat on a bench in the locker room, laughing and waving him off.

"Dude, I'm still super dizzy. Let me just sit here and catch my breath for a sec. You go ahead.

"Just leave your dirty clothes there. I'll drop them off at the laundry room later."

Silas looked completely grossed out, but since he couldn't stand the smell of vomit on himself any longer, he finally caved.

"I'm just going to take a quick rinse. Rest here, and I'll grab my own clothes for the laundry on my way out."

I mumbled some vague agreement, already closing my eyes.

Silas stood in the doorway staring at me for a few solid seconds before turning to head into the showers.

The second his shadow disappeared, I snapped up from the bench, diving through his pile of clothes to dig out his phone.

The year Scarlett died, he had changed his lock screen password right in front of me to 1117, which was their shared birthday.

Once I swiped past the lock screen, I went straight to his call history, scrolling back to late autumn three years ago, the exact day Scarlett died.

That day, Silas' phone showed only one outgoing call.

At 5:28 PM, he called Scarlett.

That exact timestamp was just two hours before she fell to her death.

…

My head was spinning like crazy as I tapped on Scarlett's profile to pull up their text thread.

The final text was sent by Scarlett herself at 5:23 PM that evening.

[Silas, I just found out your biggest secret. Don't you think you owe me an explanation?]

That short, punchy sentence went off like a bomb inside my brain.

Scarlett's absolute last text message in this world had nothing to do with wanting to end her life, nor had she asked Silas to convince me to move on.

What on earth had she discovered about Silas?

Did that secret have something to do with her death?

I didn’t dare dwell on it. I whipped out my own phone, snapped a picture of the text message, and rapidly flipped back through the earlier chat history, making sure there weren't any other hidden clues.

Right as I finished doing that and shoved Silas' phone back into his jacket pocket exactly where I found it, the shower door behind me flew open with a loud bang.

"Weren't you totally passed out when I went in there?"

Silas gave me a freezing, analytical stare, his eyes sharp and full of suspicion.

My stomach dropped, but I forced an embarrassed, sheepish grin.

"I was drifting off, but then I accidentally rolled right off the bench and tweaked my lower back.

"Honestly though, that scare totally sobered me up. I'm going to go take a quick shower."

Silas didn't say anything, just kept his eyes glued to me.

Not daring to meet his gaze, I grabbed my fresh change of clothes and bolted straight for the showers.

Once I stepped inside the stall, I locked the door behind me, my back already drenched in a layer of cold sweat.

The warm water pouring down over my skin couldn't wash away the bone-deep chill settling into my chest.

Silas had lied.

Why would he lie to me? Why did he block me from digging into the truth of Scarlett's death?

What was his secret, really?

A million terrifying questions spun through my head, threatening to split my skull wide open.

When I came out after the shower, Silas was already dressed, sitting on a bench and chain-smoking with a pile of cigarette butts scattered all over the floor around him.

He glanced up at me, his tone totally flat. "Feeling better? Want to head back and grab a couple more drinks?"

"Nah, I'm good, man," I said, forcing myself to play it cool, "I drank way too much today, my head's still pounding. I just want to head back and crash."

Silas didn't argue, just gave a single nod. "I'll drive you back."

"The second you showed a reaction to that name and started chasing after the truth, I had to do whatever it took to stop you. I had to trap you inside the lie she built about her depression and suicide, so you would never find out the brutal reality."It turned out that from the very beginning, Scarlett had been protecting me.Even if it meant sacrificing her own life and carrying the shameful label of a depressed suicide victim, she still fought to keep me safe.I couldn't hold it back anymore, collapsing forward onto the metal table and breaking down into gut-wrenching, uncontrollable sobs.Three years of fierce, blind obsession shattered into dust in a single second, leaving behind nothing but a tidal wave of crushing guilt and total despair. The killer I had hated with every fiber of my being for three years wasn't some stranger. It was me.I was the one who had murdered the woman I loved more than life itself, the one who had killed my own unborn child.Silas, whom I’d loa

"Why?" I choked out."Before you and Scarlett got married, you suffered a severe accident and sustained massive head trauma."Ever since that accident, you developed severe dissociative identity disorder, which people commonly call schizophrenia."You split into a second personality—a version of you who was violent, extreme, and completely out of control. That side of you had been secretly working with the drug cartel for a long time."I was your exclusive attending psychiatrist. From the very beginning, only two people knew about this: me and Scarlett. We kept it hidden from you the entire time because we were afraid that if you found out, your mind would shatter under the psychological shock and your condition would deteriorate beyond repair."…My breathing hitched. I opened my mouth to speak, but not a single sound came out as I stared blankly at him.Listening to the horrific truth, one I had already guessed in my darkest nightmares yet refused to accept, felt like being to

Yet the second that thought bubbled up, I brutally shoved it down, too terrified and unwilling to let my mind go there. On the evening of the third day, Mr. Hunter arrived. He carried a brown parcel envelope, his expression even heavier and darker than it had been three days ago, carrying a trace of almost unbearable pity.My heart sank."Mr. Hunter, you found something?""Yeah." Mr. Hunter stepped into the apartment and laid the envelope down on the table. "We found it. Jace, you need to brace yourself."…I didn't say a word, simply reaching out to pull the flap open and spilling the contents out onto the table.Right on top was an apartment check-in record for the exact building where Scarlett fell to her death. The name listed as the registered tenant was mine. The ID number, phone number, and signature were all entirely mine, down to the final digit. My mind went blank, static roaring in my ears as the papers nearly slipped from my trembling fingers."No way. I’ve never

Clutching the medical files, I bolted out the door like a madman, slammed my foot on the gas, and drove straight to Silas' place.I hammered on his front door with everything I had until he finally pulled it open. The second he saw the papers in my hand, the color drained completely from his face.I shoved past him, stormed into the apartment, and slammed the thick stack of files onto the coffee table."What the hell is this?" I glared right at him. "I’ve never seen you for any kind of treatment. Where did these records come from? What did you do to me?"…Silas stared back at me, his lips parting, but not a single word came out.In his eyes, there was a heavy, tangled mix of pain and hesitation that I couldn't read, along with a flicker of panic I had never seen on him before."Jace," he finally said after a long, agonizing pause, "Stop digging.""Why the hell should I stop?" I fired back, my eyes burning red. "Scarlett's death, these creepy medical files, and every single se

I even tracked down every home security camera and dashcam memory card we owned, then went through the footage frame by frame.I thought I'd find footage of Silas sneaking into our house behind my back, or of him meeting up with cartel members, or shouting matches between him and Scarlett, or any solid piece of evidence showing he murdered her.Instead of finding anything suspicious involving Silas, I dug up a mountain of terrifying footage that I had zero memory of taking!…On memory cards dating back three years, I found over a dozen records of late-night drives. The footage always showed departures around one or two in the morning. The routes led from our house to an abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of town, with the car returning two or three hours later.I had never set foot in the warehouse in my life. I had never even heard of them.I stared at the screen, watching my own face behind the steering wheel while my brain remained a blank void, completely devoi

I stared blindly at the security clearance protocols printed on the paperwork, my mind completely blank.…"Besides, right after the intelligence leak back then, internal affairs launched an immediate mole hunt," Mr. Hunter continued, his tone solemn."Silas was actually the first person among all related personnel to voluntarily submit to a background check. Every single call log, communication record, and travel history was cross-examined and verified over and over again, and nothing was found."Every single word systematically tore down the foundation of the truth I had spent three years building.I looked at those black-and-white investigation results on the page, feeling every ounce of strength drain straight out of my body until my legs gave out and I collapsed back into the chair.No.This made no sense. If Silas wasn't the mole, then why had he lied to me? Why did he fake Scarlett's depression diagnosis? Why did he go to such lengths to block me from investigating her d
