Chapter 3

Author: Cinderwing
The entire car ride back was suffocatingly tense.

I leaned my head against the passenger window, pretending to catch some rest, but I kept a sharp eye on Silas' every move.

He drove smoothly, his expression completely unreadable, but I had this gut feeling that he kept stealing glances at me in the rearview mirror.

When we pulled up outside my house, I pushed the car door open, muttered a quick thanks, and hurried toward the front door.

"Jace," Silas called out, stopping me in my tracks, "Let the past stay in the past. If Scarlett is watching over you from heaven, the thing she'd want most is for you to move on and live a normal life."

My footsteps paused. I turned back to look at him, but his face gave nothing away.

"I know. Thanks, man."

With that, I turned, unlocked the front door, slipped inside, and slammed it shut, pressing my back flat against the wood as I gasped for air.

Without wasting a second, I headed straight for the study and carefully dragged out a dusty cardboard box holding Scarlett's old keepsakes.

Deep down in the bottom compartment, wrapped tightly in brown parcel paper, was a shattered, broken phone.

It was the phone Scarlett had on her the day she fell. Even though it was completely wrecked, I had kept it safe all these years, never once daring to touch it.

Right now, it was my only lifeline to uncover the secret buried deep underground.

I took the phone to a trusted tech friend of mine and begged him to help me salvage whatever data was left on it.

The second he started running diagnostics, my friend frowned.

"Dude, where the hell did you even dig up a phone like this? Even the contact list was protected by a triple-layered security lock.

"With this level of security clearance, who was the owner? Some kind of secret agent?"

He said it as a joke, but my heart skipped a beat.

Scarlett and I had dated for a year and been married for two. I thought I knew everything about her.

Why would an ordinary office worker like her need a phone with triple-layered security?

My friend told me the data recovery would take at least three days. After thanking him, I headed straight down to the corporate building where Scarlett used to work.

She had always told me she worked as an administrative clerk at an import-export firm. I had driven over to pick her up outside a few times, but I'd never actually gone inside.

When I walked up to the front desk and gave the company name, the property manager furrowed his brow.

"Are you sure you have the right name?

"There's never been an import-export company registered in our directory."

…

I froze. I double-checked the address and the company name on my phone, but he shook his head with absolute certainty.

To prove he wasn't making it up, he even turned his monitor toward me and pulled up the company’s entire registration history.

Not only was it missing from this building, but across the entire city, Scarlett's so-called company had never even existed.

Walking out of the glass building, a freezing numbness spread through my limbs.

Why had Scarlett lied to me?

If she wasn't working at that company at all, then where on earth was she going every single morning and coming back late at night?

After three days of walking around like a zombie, my friend finally called me to pick up the phone.

"Your phone is practically cursed, man. The exact moment I successfully recovered the contact list, the system triggered a security tripwire and fried the memory board completely!

"Good thing I snapped a picture of the screen with my ninja reflexes just in time, or we would've lost it all."

In the photo my friend showed me, Scarlett's contact list only had three names on it.

Me, Silas, and a mysterious contact saved simply as "Mr. Hunter."

A wave of panic hit me like a physical blow as I stared at that phone number.

I was one hundred percent certain that from the time we started dating until the day she died, I had never heard of anyone named Hunter in her life.

Yet according to the call logs, not only did she talk to this Hunter person almost every single day, but some of those calls happened at two or three in the morning—long after I was already fast asleep.

A hidden contact list, daily check-ins, and secret late-night phone calls.

Piled on top of each other, these clues pointed toward one devastating conclusion: Scarlett had been cheating on me.

"The second you showed a reaction to that name and started chasing after the truth, I had to do whatever it took to stop you. I had to trap you inside the lie she built about her depression and suicide, so you would never find out the brutal reality."It turned out that from the very beginning, Scarlett had been protecting me.Even if it meant sacrificing her own life and carrying the shameful label of a depressed suicide victim, she still fought to keep me safe.I couldn't hold it back anymore, collapsing forward onto the metal table and breaking down into gut-wrenching, uncontrollable sobs.Three years of fierce, blind obsession shattered into dust in a single second, leaving behind nothing but a tidal wave of crushing guilt and total despair. The killer I had hated with every fiber of my being for three years wasn't some stranger. It was me.I was the one who had murdered the woman I loved more than life itself, the one who had killed my own unborn child.Silas, whom I’d loa

"Why?" I choked out."Before you and Scarlett got married, you suffered a severe accident and sustained massive head trauma."Ever since that accident, you developed severe dissociative identity disorder, which people commonly call schizophrenia."You split into a second personality—a version of you who was violent, extreme, and completely out of control. That side of you had been secretly working with the drug cartel for a long time."I was your exclusive attending psychiatrist. From the very beginning, only two people knew about this: me and Scarlett. We kept it hidden from you the entire time because we were afraid that if you found out, your mind would shatter under the psychological shock and your condition would deteriorate beyond repair."…My breathing hitched. I opened my mouth to speak, but not a single sound came out as I stared blankly at him.Listening to the horrific truth, one I had already guessed in my darkest nightmares yet refused to accept, felt like being to

Yet the second that thought bubbled up, I brutally shoved it down, too terrified and unwilling to let my mind go there. On the evening of the third day, Mr. Hunter arrived. He carried a brown parcel envelope, his expression even heavier and darker than it had been three days ago, carrying a trace of almost unbearable pity.My heart sank."Mr. Hunter, you found something?""Yeah." Mr. Hunter stepped into the apartment and laid the envelope down on the table. "We found it. Jace, you need to brace yourself."…I didn't say a word, simply reaching out to pull the flap open and spilling the contents out onto the table.Right on top was an apartment check-in record for the exact building where Scarlett fell to her death. The name listed as the registered tenant was mine. The ID number, phone number, and signature were all entirely mine, down to the final digit. My mind went blank, static roaring in my ears as the papers nearly slipped from my trembling fingers."No way. I’ve never

Clutching the medical files, I bolted out the door like a madman, slammed my foot on the gas, and drove straight to Silas' place.I hammered on his front door with everything I had until he finally pulled it open. The second he saw the papers in my hand, the color drained completely from his face.I shoved past him, stormed into the apartment, and slammed the thick stack of files onto the coffee table."What the hell is this?" I glared right at him. "I’ve never seen you for any kind of treatment. Where did these records come from? What did you do to me?"…Silas stared back at me, his lips parting, but not a single word came out.In his eyes, there was a heavy, tangled mix of pain and hesitation that I couldn't read, along with a flicker of panic I had never seen on him before."Jace," he finally said after a long, agonizing pause, "Stop digging.""Why the hell should I stop?" I fired back, my eyes burning red. "Scarlett's death, these creepy medical files, and every single se

I even tracked down every home security camera and dashcam memory card we owned, then went through the footage frame by frame.I thought I'd find footage of Silas sneaking into our house behind my back, or of him meeting up with cartel members, or shouting matches between him and Scarlett, or any solid piece of evidence showing he murdered her.Instead of finding anything suspicious involving Silas, I dug up a mountain of terrifying footage that I had zero memory of taking!…On memory cards dating back three years, I found over a dozen records of late-night drives. The footage always showed departures around one or two in the morning. The routes led from our house to an abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of town, with the car returning two or three hours later.I had never set foot in the warehouse in my life. I had never even heard of them.I stared at the screen, watching my own face behind the steering wheel while my brain remained a blank void, completely devoi

I stared blindly at the security clearance protocols printed on the paperwork, my mind completely blank.…"Besides, right after the intelligence leak back then, internal affairs launched an immediate mole hunt," Mr. Hunter continued, his tone solemn."Silas was actually the first person among all related personnel to voluntarily submit to a background check. Every single call log, communication record, and travel history was cross-examined and verified over and over again, and nothing was found."Every single word systematically tore down the foundation of the truth I had spent three years building.I looked at those black-and-white investigation results on the page, feeling every ounce of strength drain straight out of my body until my legs gave out and I collapsed back into the chair.No.This made no sense. If Silas wasn't the mole, then why had he lied to me? Why did he fake Scarlett's depression diagnosis? Why did he go to such lengths to block me from investigating her d
