The Dinner

“Please help me…. Laura please….” My eyes closed as I completely blacked out.

9:45 PM

Thirty five minutes before the explosion.

The dinner party I have been planning for a few days, finally came to place, silent orchestra music played at the background to soothe the mood. Several of the guests trooped in, even more than I had bargained for. It was nice to see most of my father’s friends and that they could make out time to celebrate tonight with me.

There was no actual reason for tonight party, most of the parties I held and attended never really had a purpose other than to show off our flashy outfit and make new business partners, I know for a fact that my husband will stand out in that aspect.

I walked alongside Carlos as we went around, greeting all of our guests. We both smiled at each other when we get praised about how our love was blooming on our faces. As we walk past Laura, I notice Carlos eye her, she turned away immediately, she is still angry that Carlos supposedly lied to her.

I was enjoying every bit of it, Carlos might soon take an excuse and go to the pantry, where I believe they will make up and make out.

“Honey” Carlos said calmly as he called for my attention, “Can you excuse me for a while? I need to use the rest room”

Like I didn’t just say it, rest room indeed!

“Sure you can go” I said with my sweet voice. “Wait a moment, love” I called him, “Can you hold it? There is someone I like you to meet”

I shoved my arm under his, led him to the doctor that delivered me when I was a baby, I can’t believe he came today since he is rarely in the country.

“Ah… little Salome” Dr. Alejandro said patting my head, he loves calling me little even when I wasn’t and pats my head along with it, he probably still see me as a child. “You must be Carlos” He extended his hand to shake Carlos.

Carlos brought and immediately shook him, “It is a pleasure meeting you, sir. My wife here had said so much about you and doesn’t stop talking when she starts” Carlos said as Dr. Alejandro gave a hearty laughter.

“I believe you, Salome is quite the talkative” Dr. Alejandro said, “I should warn you, take care of her well, if you don’t….. I’ll kill you”

Carlos looked like his soul left his body as Dr. Alejandro said that, it wasn’t a real threat but you could definitely tell that Carlos wasn’t himself, he was totally blank.

I nudged him a bit to get rid of the shock, “Uncle is only playing with you, my love. I know you can never cheat on me” I snuggled closer to him as Carlos laughed like a hyena.

“My love, I really need to use the rest room” He whispered into my ear as he gave a slight bow to the doctor before leaving. I watched as he went to the store room first as the doctor spoke about how wonderful Carlos was and tense too.

He has to; he was obviously put on the spot.

Laura was was still in the hall with us as she quickly takes a drink from one of the servers tray and gobbles it down, She took two more glasses and drank them all at one go. She is going to be drunk at this rate, I know it is burning her within that Carlos slept with me and lied to her.

I ignored her for now as I went back to the doctor, “What about Vanessa?” I asked, she is Dr. Alejandro daughter and like my twin sister, we do almost everything together though I am a month older than she is, she later travelled out of the country to school along with her father, ever since then I have never seen nor heard from her.

“She is fine” Dr. Alejandro replied before excusing himself. He seemed awfully different now that I mentioned his daughter but that didn’t stick in my head as something chaotic happened.

Laura vomit on the floor as she had so much to drink. I quickly ran to her and brought her into my room so she could wash her face while her mess gets cleaned up. Her phone beeped from her handbag as I brought it out to see fifteen messages popped on the screen, all came from Carlos as he begged her to come see him in the pantry.

He was like a lost puppy constantly seeking attention but Laura wasn’t just having it with him, I scrolled through their messages where I read about Laura telling Carlos how horny she was and that she need to quench this insatiable lust she was feeling.

There were a lot of things on this that made me feel that, Laura was the one who incited this relationship with my husband. I was so into finding out more that I didn’t notice Laura was standing before me.

I juped on seeing her as the phone fell from my hands, “What are you doing with my phone?” She asked, bending down to pick it up, she unlocked it, raising her head up, she snickered before saying, “So you know?”

“About what?” I immediately denied it, even though it was of no use as I have already been caught, “So what if I do? Don’t you think I deserve an apology?”

“Apology? I thought you would ask for something more than that?” She laughed covering her mouth, “Okay fine, I am sorry for stealing your hot husband from you since you are not capable of taking care of his needs”

There was mockery in her voice as she said that, Laura doesn’t mean any of the words she had said, she doesn’t even care that she had hurt me.

“When did it all began?” I managed to ask ad-midst the tears that had formed from my eyes, “The two of you, when did it all start? Was it three months ago?” my body was already shaking as I could no longer handle the betrayal, I have finally lost my bearing, “Answer me!” I yelled at her face.

I wanted to know, everything.

“If you really want to know, why don’t you go ask your husband? Besides I should let you know that you deserve everything that has happened to you, even more, brat!” She said approaching the door, I went after her and yanked her hair bringing her back into the room. “Let go of me”

“Why?” I threw her unto the bed, “Tell me when did the two of you start all this, when I started looking like a fool in front of all of you? You will tell me everything or you won’t leave this room”

She kicked me with her legs making fall to the ground, “If you really want to know, it all started way back before you two got married. Carlos is only with you because he is ambitious and I support him all the way, you already made his VP, know that he coming for your position”

This same crap again. Carlos can never be made president without my help, same way he got in the VP position, no one can go against me.

*BOOM*

“What was that?” I rushed to the door to see if I would be able to get out, I tried numerous times but the door won’t budge, “The door is jammed” I exclaimed, trying repeatedly to see if it could loosen up.

Laura looked calm as she thought it could be something that wasn’t worth my panic. The sound was heard again, this time it was louder than before, I pressed my ear on the door to hear if I could get any noise from outside.

Someone had immediately yelled, “FIRE!!!” Laura jumped as she too heard it. We both used our strengths to push the door but it still did not unlock, I could feel myself fading as I drawn to dizziness.

The smoke had already seeped into the room, I inhaled much of it before I remembered that I was asthmatic, I still pushed harder even though I was already, it has been long since I had an asthma attack so I do know how to hold out for a longer time.

“Laura…” I toggled on her dress before I fell to ground, I was still awake as Laura came to my aid.

“Are you alright?” She asked, coughing, “Hold on,we will get out here soon” She pushed the door for the last time and it opened wide. She ran back to pick me up, or that was what I thought. She bent down beside me, for a moment she made no movement as she leaned in, “Greet the dead for me” she kissed my cheeks and closed the door.

I called her name a lot of times but she didn’t come back, “Please help, Laura….. please” I begged, everything went dark as I completely went blank.
