Klaus

The rain in the city always tasted like soot and copper.

I stood on the roof of the gallery building three blocks down from the Mandell gala, watching the swarm of red and blue police lights cut through the fog below. From this height, the chaos looked small. Pathetic. Like ants scattering after their hill had been kicked.

I pulled off my leather gloves, bone by bone, and tucked them into my coat. The encrypted comms unit on my tactical vest chimed twice. A private line.

I didn't answer right away. I pulled a cigarette from my pocket, struck a match against the damp brick wall, and cupped the flame against the wind. The tip flared amber, illuminating the scars across my knuckles before fading back into the dark.

I pressed the receiver behind my ear.

"Dominic," I said. My voice was a flat, low hum, stripped of the electronic rasp I used during work.

"Klaus," my handler’s voice cracked through the scrambled frequency. "We just got a high-priority ping from the Mandell network. Clifford himself called the emergency relay."

I took a slow drag of the cigarette, watching a convoy of black SUVs speed away from the gallery’s side entrance. "Did he?"

"Someone broke his perimeter tonight," she said. "Infiltrated the VIP wing, bypassed six armed guards, and cornered his daughter. Left a knife in a table and walked out. Clifford is terrified out of his mind. He's offering open ended capital for full spectrum protection."

My jaw tightened around the filter of the cigarette. The smoke sat heavy in my lungs.

"Is she injured?" I asked.

A beat of silence on the line. "The daughter? No. The report says the intruder didn't touch her skin. Just took off her mask and left a warning."

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second. In my mind’s eye, I could still feel the fragile, frantic pulse beating beneath her warm skin when I held her wrist. I could still see the stubborn flame in her dark eyes right before she tried to split my skull open with a bronze perfume burner.

She hadn't screamed. She had swung.

She was as fierce as she had been the first time I saw her three years ago, standardizing her routine through my long range scope before I ever stepped foot into this godforsaken city. She didn't know I knew the pattern of her breath. She didn't know I knew she favored her left foot when she was tired, or that she hated the sound of thunder. She thought tonight was the first time our paths had crossed.

She didn't know I had been keeping her alive from the shadows long before her father realized he was drowning.

"He wants you specifically, Klaus," my handler continued, oblivious to the quiet war going on inside my chest. "He said he needs someone without a soul. Someone to act as her shadow 24/7 until he roots out the ghost from his past."

"Clifford Mandell is a coward," I said quietly, flicking the ash off my cigarette into the abyss of the alleyway below. "He built a palace on top of corpses, and now he's shocked that the ground is giving way."

"So you're declining?"

I looked down at my hand the same gloved hand that had pinned Anna Mandell against that marble table twenty minutes ago. The phantom imprint of her skin lingered against my palm like a brand.

Accepting this contract meant stepping directly into her world. It meant standing outside her bedroom door. It meant watching her up close, smelling the soft jasmine scent of her hair, hearing her voice and never, under any circumstances, letting her know the monster guarding her was the same monster who held the knife.

If I stayed in the dark, she remained safe from me. But if I didn't take the contract, Clifford would hire someone else. Someone who might miss a angle. Someone who might let her die.

That was a variable I could not permit.

"Tell Mandell I accept," I said, my tone dropping an octave, turning cold as iron. "On my terms. Total authority over her security detail. No interference from his men. No exceptions."

"He'll agree to anything right now, Klaus. When do you start?"

I dropped the cigarette onto the wet concrete and crushed it beneath the heavy sole of my boot.

"I'm already there," I whispered, and cut the line.

KlausHer skin felt like heated silk. When her shoulder pressed against my palm, a violent surge of electricity tore down my spine, threatening to obliterate every shred of restraint I had spent three years building. My fingers flared instinctively, wrapping around the delicate curve of her shoulder, pulling her an inch closer until her chest was nearly brushing mine.I could feel her trembling. Not from cold, not from fear, but from the same terrifying, intoxicating fire that was burning me alive from the inside out."Anna..." Her name ripped from my throat, dark, ragged, and thick with desire. She looked up at me, her dark eyes wide, her lips parted in a breathless invitation. She tilted her head, exposing the long, delicate line of her throat, the same throat I had wanted to cover in bruises and kisses since the moment I stepped foot into this godforsaken estate."Touch me, Klaus," she whispered, her hands rising to press flat against my ribs, right beneath my shoulder holster. She

KlausI sat in the dark wood armchair, my hands resting flat on my knees, every muscle in my body locked so tight it felt like my bones would snap.In the faint, silver light filtering through the reinforced balcony glass, I watched her bed. She was lying on her side, her dark hair spilled across the white pillowcases, her breathing slowly evening out into sleep.I looked down at my right hand.My palm still burned. The memory of her soft, warm skin beneath that thin scrap of lace was seared into my nerve endings. When I had pressed her against the door, feeling the delicate curve of her waist and the sudden, frantic hitch in her breath, every instinct I possessed had roared to turn her around, lift her onto the nearest surface, and claim every inch of her.I had felt her body react to mine. She hadn't pulled away. She had tilted her head back, offering the sweet, soft expanse of her throat to me like a sacrifice. You're going to get her killed, I warned myself, my jaw grinding until

AnnaBy eight o’clock that evening, my bedroom had been converted into a maximum security cell. Two tactical technicians in unmarked dark gray jumpsuits had spent hours drilling heavy iron deadbolts into my balcony doors, affixing shatterproof, bullet resistant film across every pane of glass, and mounting subtle, low-light thermal cameras over the corners of my ceiling. They worked with silent, practiced efficiency, moving around my velvet armchair and canopy bed as if I were simply an obstacle to navigate. And through it all, Klaus Dominic sat in the dark wood armchair in the far corner of the room, watching everything. He hadn't taken off his suit jacket. He hadn't unbuttoned his collar. He sat with his hands resting flat on his knees, his spine perfectly straight, his dark hazel eyes tracking every drill bit, every screw, every breath I drew. He looked like an apex predator waiting patiently in the tall grass, silent, motioned, and terrifyingly relaxed."Is the surveillance feed w

AnnaThe Mandell estate did not feel like a home. It felt like a mausoleum constructed from imported limestone, double paned ballistic glass, and cold, polished granite.By sunrise, the entire estate was placed on Level Four lockdown. Iron gates that usually stood open were chained shut. Armed guards with visible sidearms patrolled the manicured lawns in pairs, their radios crackling through the damp morning mist. Upstairs in my bedroom, the heavy velvet drapes had been drawn tight, shutting out the grey light of dawn.I paced the length of my hardwood floor, my velvet house slippers making quiet, frantic friction against the rug. I hadn't slept a second. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those narrow slits in the skull mask, dark and bottomless, staring straight through me. I felt the iron vice of his gloved fingers around my wrist, pinning me effortlessly while the world narrowed down to the edge of a blade.A sharp double knock echoed against my bedroom door."Anna," my father’s v

AnnaThe velvet draped over the private gallery doors did nothing to muffle the heavy bass vibrating from the floor below.Downstairs, Clifford Mandell was holding court. I knew without looking exactly how my father looked at that very second: a glass of twenty-year-old scotch balanced between finger and thumb, his teeth flashing in a politician’s polished grin, surrounded by men who bought laws and sold influence.Upstairs, in the quiet, dim corridor reserved for VIP guests, I stood alone in front of a heavy gilded mirror, tracing the silver embroidery along the bodice of my gown. I hated events like this. I hated the perfume that smelled like artificial jasmine, the clinking of crystal glasses, and most of all, the lingering gaze of men trying to calculate my net worth based on my last name.I leaned closer to the mirror, adjusting the silk ribbon of my lace masquerade mask.A floorboard creaked behind me.I froze, my hand dropping slowly from my face. The gallery hallway was suppos
