AnnaThe velvet draped over the private gallery doors did nothing to muffle the heavy bass vibrating from the floor below.Downstairs, Clifford Mandell was holding court. I knew without looking exactly how my father looked at that very second: a glass of twenty-year-old scotch balanced between finger and thumb, his teeth flashing in a politician’s polished grin, surrounded by men who bought laws and sold influence.Upstairs, in the quiet, dim corridor reserved for VIP guests, I stood alone in front of a heavy gilded mirror, tracing the silver embroidery along the bodice of my gown. I hated events like this. I hated the perfume that smelled like artificial jasmine, the clinking of crystal glasses, and most of all, the lingering gaze of men trying to calculate my net worth based on my last name.I leaned closer to the mirror, adjusting the silk ribbon of my lace masquerade mask.A floorboard creaked behind me.I froze, my hand dropping slowly from my face. The gallery hallway was suppos

AnnaThe Mandell estate did not feel like a home. It felt like a mausoleum constructed from imported limestone, double paned ballistic glass, and cold, polished granite.By sunrise, the entire estate was placed on Level Four lockdown. Iron gates that usually stood open were chained shut. Armed guards with visible sidearms patrolled the manicured lawns in pairs, their radios crackling through the damp morning mist. Upstairs in my bedroom, the heavy velvet drapes had been drawn tight, shutting out the grey light of dawn.I paced the length of my hardwood floor, my velvet house slippers making quiet, frantic friction against the rug. I hadn't slept a second. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those narrow slits in the skull mask, dark and bottomless, staring straight through me. I felt the iron vice of his gloved fingers around my wrist, pinning me effortlessly while the world narrowed down to the edge of a blade.A sharp double knock echoed against my bedroom door."Anna," my father’s v

KlausI sat in the dark wood armchair, my hands resting flat on my knees, every muscle in my body locked so tight it felt like my bones would snap.In the faint, silver light filtering through the reinforced balcony glass, I watched her bed. She was lying on her side, her dark hair spilled across the white pillowcases, her breathing slowly evening out into sleep.I looked down at my right hand.My palm still burned. The memory of her soft, warm skin beneath that thin scrap of lace was seared into my nerve endings. When I had pressed her against the door, feeling the delicate curve of her waist and the sudden, frantic hitch in her breath, every instinct I possessed had roared to turn her around, lift her onto the nearest surface, and claim every inch of her.I had felt her body react to mine. She hadn't pulled away. She had tilted her head back, offering the sweet, soft expanse of her throat to me like a sacrifice. You're going to get her killed, I warned myself, my jaw grinding until

AnnaThe silence that settled between us after that night in the hallway was heavier than any physical lockdown. For two days, I didn't look at Klaus. When he walked into my room for the morning perimeter checks, I stared at the floor or out the window. When he stood beside me during the brief, strictly timed walks my father permitted along the rear terrace, I kept my eyes fixed straight ahead. I spoke only when spoken to, answering his low, even instructions with single, flat syllables.I had made a fool of myself. I had thrown myself at a man who viewed me as nothing more than a high risk liability, a job with an expensive price tag attached to it. The humiliation burned in the pit of my stomach, turning every quiet moment into a suffocating loop of my own foolishness.By the third morning, everything changed. It happened at 0400 hours. I was jolted awake not by a nightmare, but by the sharp, deafening blare of the estate’s primary perimeter alarm. Red emergency lights bathed my bed

AnnaThe morning after the fireplace, the mountain safe house felt less like a haven and more like a tomb frozen in time.Snow had drifted three feet high against the timber exterior walls, completely burying the lower window ledges and turning the landscape outside into an unbroken, blinding void of white. Inside, the cabin was dead quiet, save for the rhythmic snapping of pine logs in the hearth.I stayed in my room until my stomach forced me out. My lips were still tender, slightly swollen, carrying the phantom burn of Klaus’s mouth. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the heavy, rigid press of his body against mine, the possessive grip of his hand at the nape of my neck, and the raw, desperate confession he had growled against my skin: You drive me insane, Anna.He had confessed it. He had kissed me until I couldn't breathe. And then he had stepped back into his steel shell, calling it a mistake and retreating behind Miss Mandell.I pulled my heavy knit
