I didn't open the door.

I sent the six children to hide in the basement and demanded through the door that they contact a lawyer, bring in an independent pediatrician, and record everything on camera.

Ward's tone stayed gentle throughout. "It's only a thirty-six-hour emergency observation at most. Finn's fever hasn't broken. Every second of delay could be life-threatening."

"Then send a doctor here. Or I'll take him to the hospital myself."

"You've already been flagged for obstructing treatment. Ms. Carter, don't let your decision cost the other five children their chance."

Deputy Garrett showed the evaluation order. The paper authorized them to inspect the children's living conditions, but nowhere did it say they could forcibly remove anyone.

I was about to point that out when Finn coughed from the basement.

The door was rammed open.

Two guards rushed in first. Ward went straight for Finn. He was so frightened that his tail slid out from his pants leg and wrapped tight around my waist.

"Hostile form!" Deputy Garrett drew a stun gun. "Release the child and step back!"

"He's three years old!" I pulled Finn into my arms. "He's scared. All of you, get out!"

The current tore through my back and shoulders.

My whole body seized. I dropped hard to my knees. My teeth cracked against my tongue and blood flooded my mouth, but my hands still held Finn's clothes.

"Mama!"

All six children rushed toward me at once.

Asher shielded his five brothers. Blake stood at the front. Caleb, overwhelmed by the terror around him, pressed his hands over his ears. The twins each grabbed a fistful of my shirt. Finn could barely stand with his fever. Yet not one of them hid behind me and begged to be spared.

Blake's eyes went to slits, fangs already showing. A second stun gun locked onto me immediately.

Asher suddenly stepped in front of his brothers.

"Don't bite anyone!" He shoved Blake back and raised both hands first. "Everyone shift back. Don't let them hurt Mom again."

Six tails slowly retracted into their clothes.

They could have fought back, but they lined up for my sake and let the guards stick needles into their arms.

"Don't drug them!" I tried to get up. A boot came down on my wrist.

Sedatives were injected into six small bodies, one after another.

Finn went limp first. His temperature was already unstable. The moment the drug hit, his lips turned blue and his breathing went faint.

Before they carried him away, he was still reaching for me.

"Mama..."

My vision went black.

When I came to, I was strapped to a stretcher.

The ambulance door wasn't fully shut. I could see the children's wrists tagged in red, orange, and black. Asher and Blake were loaded into the first windowless medical van. Caleb and the twins were in the second. Finn was alone in the third.

"Don't separate them!"

I tore the restraint off my hand and jumped from the ambulance. My bare feet hit the snow, but I barely felt the pain. I saw only the third van as its doors began to close.

I chased it for over thirty feet before I slipped and crashed into a snowbank.

Six terrified little faces flashed behind the windows. Asher was pounding the glass. Blake strained against his seat belt. The twins clung to each other. Caleb had his eyes shut, searching for my heartbeat. Finn's van passed last. His small hand pressed against the glass, the black tag on his wrist nearly wider than his arm.

Three vans pulled away, one after another.

All I managed to grab was one of Finn's tiny socks that had fallen off.

Deputy Garrett dragged me back to the car while Ward dictated her report.

"Mother actively assaulted personnel during execution. Children cooperated voluntarily with transfer. Records suggest possible delusional father narrative. Recommend immediate psychiatric evaluation."

"They didn't cooperate voluntarily!" I shouted hoarsely. "The body cameras caught everything!"

Deputy Garrett wouldn't meet my eyes.

Ward placed a document in front of me. "You can sign a thirty-six-hour voluntary observation. Otherwise, we will immediately send the high-risk children to foster homes in different states."

"That's not voluntary."

"You can choose not to sign." She glanced at the tiny sock in my fist. "But from today, you may never know where they are."

I gritted my teeth and signed beneath the words "observation only."

At that same moment, Cassian's private jet had already turned toward Montana.

His security team received a report of six abnormal children being transferred across the border to Canada, and half the team requested a course change to pursue.

Cassian looked at the timestamp on the record.

"Seventeen minutes after the video went public, a complete transfer manifest appeared in the border system. That's too fast."

"You think it's fake?"

"Someone wants me in Canada." He closed the file. "Continue to Blackpine. I'll investigate it myself."

The elevator at St. Grace descended.

I was wheeled into a windowless underground level. A red digital display lit up on the wall.

Risk observation remaining: 36 hours.

Behind three silver-gray doors, all six children cried out for Mama at once.

I threw myself against the wall and tapped out our seven-beat code with my knuckles.

One, two, three. A pause. Then four.

The countdown ticked to 35:59:59.

The suppressors engaged. The children's cries cut off abruptly.

From the other side of the wall, there was no answer.

A year later, I attended Ward's sentencing in person. Ward insisted she'd been protecting ordinary children. The prosecutor simply displayed the core needles, silver bands, temperature logs, and forty-seven genuine medical records on the screen.Diane also placed her daughter's band on the evidence table. "Since she left your care, she hasn't had a single unexplained chill."The court found that St. Grace had conducted illegal experiments, falsified records, forcibly medicated patients, unlawfully detained them, and obstructed justice. Ward and the principal staff were convicted and permanently barred from children's medical work.Deputy Garrett lost his badge and was held accountable for the false report and unlawful use of force. Seraphina was stripped of her Council seat and inheritance rights by the Serpent Council. All compensation went into the victims' trust. Children from the twelve partner centers received reassessment, corrected files, and independent legal counsel. The Black

Weeks later, as the Carter Protocol was about to expand to more pilot sites, the Vere family board froze the final tranche of treatment funding. They set three conditions: the center had to bear the Vere name, Cassian had to serve as permanent chairman, and a copy of all mixed-blood children's data had to be stored on Serpent servers. The Norton family then hosted a medical charity gala in New York as a fundraiser. The invitations claimed support for mixed-blood children. What was actually on the table was who would control the center. When I walked into the ballroom with my lawyer, my nameplate had been placed at a small table by the service entrance. Claire sat at the head table, flanked by Vere directors and hospital coalition representatives."This is Ms. Carter's first event of this kind. A seat near the exit is more convenient," she said with a smile. "If she's uncomfortable, at least she won't disturb the other guests."I didn't argue about seating. I had my lawyer spread the fi

By the time I reached the ER, Noah was barely conscious from the fever. The doctor on duty stood at the door and wouldn't let the nurses administer medication. "Without a Serpent physician's cosignature, who takes the blame if something goes wrong?""Since when does emergency treatment require a second sign-off?" I asked."The protocol says both have to be present."I had no comeback for that. The original protocol really hadn't spelled out an emergency exception. The hospital exploited a loophole, but we were the ones who'd left it.The Serpent physician Cassian had dispatched was still forty minutes away. Cassian proposed taking control of the treatment room. I stopped him."If you take over, tomorrow the hospital will say only the Vere family has the resources to enforce the protocol."I contacted Sarah and had her join via encrypted video for a remote consult. The doctor on duty handled the fever reduction and fluids, with the entire session recorded and every medication record bac

St. Grace had registered its twelve partner sites under different names. On paper, they were rare-disease clinics, child rehabilitation centers, and genetics labs. Inside, they all used the same numbering system. In the command vehicle, I turned Finn's old band over in my hands. The first two digits indicated ability type, the middle two indicated age, and the last two were the facility code."They can change the names, but they can't change this numbering system." I wrote the pattern down for the investigators. "Start with facilities that had a sudden spike in power use for cooling and applied for medical transport tonight."The twelve sites quickly narrowed to three. The nearest was in the neighboring state, registered as the St. Anne's Children's Sleep Center.Cassian opened his personal emergency account on the spot. Twelve medical jets, thirty ambulances, and independent doctors across multiple states stood by. The nearest medical team would deploy to whichever facility still held

Before the hearing began, I demanded that an independent inspector check the air and exits.Seraphina refused, citing royal protocol. "A human cannot order the Council to dismantle its ventilation system.""Then we withdraw from the hearing." I took Finn's hand. "The children will not enter a room that refuses a safety check."Voices in the gallery accused me of having something to hide. Seraphina also ordered the side doors locked, claiming that once a royal hearing commenced, no one could leave. The moment the locks clicked, Blake's whole body went rigid, and mist started forming around the twins.Cassian unclasped the black-gold King's Seal and placed it in my palm."For the duration of this hearing, she is in charge of the children's safety," he told the guards. "If she asks for a door opened, you open it. If she orders the hearing stopped, no one continues."Seraphina's composure cracked. "The Seal cannot be given to a human.""I didn't ask for your permission."The guards immedia

The audit confirmed that my electronic signature covered only the main contract. The interspecies addendum had been merged into the file by the agency's account after the seven nights ended. The timestamps and page numbers didn't match. The agency director initially hid behind a confidentiality agreement, but once our lawyers produced internal payment records, he admitted Seraphina had instructed them to "simplify the human version" and produce a complete contract favorable to the Serpent Council after the fact. But Seraphina didn't withdraw the bloodline petition. She shifted her argument. "The addendum may have procedural flaws, but that doesn't mean the young can leave royal oversight. Since Cassian acknowledges the bloodline, he has a duty to bring the heirs back to the Vere family."That statement forced Cassian into a choice between two paths. If he claimed the children as Serpent King, royal precedent would grant him automatic primary custody. A human court might also conclude t
