Mama stood over the man laid out on the table before her.

A chill crawled up her spine, raising goosebumps along her skin.

Deeply wrong.

Her gaze flickered to Kael.

He sat hunched over, face buried in his palms, his foot tapping relentlessly against the floor.

She exhaled slowly.

Her beads and chains clinked softly as she lifted her hands in quiet surrender. The

A heavy, exhausted silence covered the room. The room smelled of burnt sage and copper. It felt heavy, it clung to the skin like a dumbbell.Kathleen arguably, felt the most weight. Nothing made sense but did at the exact same time.Mama had long stood up to clear up the room whilst Kael and Kathleen sat on the floor in silence. But unlike Kael's fixed, stern gaze, Kathleen's was erratic. She didn't know what or whom to focus on.She pushed herself off the floor, her legs trembling so hard she had to grab something to stabilise herself."Explain it," Kathleen said. Her voice didn't shake, but it was thin, like a wire stretched to its breaking point.Mama didn't look up from the clean up she was doing. The rhythmic gentle sound of her broom against the wooden floor boards was the only sound in the room. Kael, however, flinched. He was slumped against the far wall, his knees drawn to his chest. To Kathleen’s new eyes, he didn't look like all that calm ; he looked like his was a step a

Silence. Not just a sound but a feeling as well. All Noah could see, could feel. The darkness stretched on and on and on, Noah felt himself going insane. The charred herb scent he had clung to had long faded with the light. He felt truely alone. The sound of his heartbeat was the only sign he's still alive but as time went on he began to doubt if it is even real.He had let the darkness take him. But a gut wrenching cry broke through the silence and his ears perked up, desperate, following the sound. He found himself on the group, bleeding. His body felt battered, his voice broke as he screamed, his throat felt dry and sore but he cried out anyways. The dust of the earth flew erratically due to the biting wind, flying into his eyes and down his throat the sky looked red as if it might rain blood. All he could do was watch Kael get dragged in to the mouth of a portal by a man he couldn't see. Each time he tried to reach out to stop the man, he felt a hot sensation in his throat. He fe

The sound was almost melodic… as if something unseen acknowledged her decision.“I’ll heal him.”Both Kael and Kathleen snapped to attention, relief flashing across their faces“But,” she continued, her tone sharpening, “I need to protect myself first.”“Protect yourself?” Kathleen frowned. “He’s unconscious, he’s not- ”“What’s wrong?” Kael cut in, his voice tight. He shot Kathleen a warning look before turning back to Mama.Mama didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes lingered on Noah.“Tell me exactl

Noah could feel and hear, yet couldn't at the same exact time.It felt as if his senses were covered by a fog only letting little slivers through. The occasional slimy warmth at the back of his throat and the feeling of it pouring out his mouth onto himself, he felt it.He could also feel Kael pace round the room, Kathleen's warm hand on his skin and, though muffled, the sound of their argument."We need to get him to a hospital now, why can't you understand that" Kathleen raged, her hand squeezing the sofa so tightly the fabric wrinkled beneath her grip. She understood she can't fight him off and make a run for it with an unconscious, constantly vomiting Noah. She needs his help to move Noah but for some reason he refuses to help her take him to the hospital.Kathleen made up her mind, consequences be damned, she needs to get her friend to the hospital. She rubbed the tears away from her eyes and grabbed onto Noah to hoist him up but as she did so more blood gushed out of Noah's mout

Kael was gone. The world fell into an eerie, suffocating silence. Panic surged through him, his heartbeat drumming against his ribs as his breathing became shallow and erratic."Kael?!" he shouted, the sound dying instantly i
