Chapter 4

Candy Sweetie
"It's a healing potion I specially concocted just for you." Her voice was as soft as a sigh as her fingernails dragged across my face and left one bloody scratch after another.

"A generous dose of silver powder mixed with wolfsbane juice, plus a little something hallucinogenic. Once you drink it, your nervous system will slowly burn away until the very last moment!" she added.

My fingers clenched around the armrests of the chair. She reached out, grabbed my hair, and forced me to lift my head to face her.

"Alex is the esteemed Alpha of Darknight Pack. You're nothing but a filthy rogue. You're not worthy of him!"

She straightened up before slipping back into her usual gentle demeanor.

"Personally, though, I wouldn't recommend going around telling people about this." She glanced at Alex. "After all, even if you tell him, he won't believe you."

It felt like my body had been thrown into a raging fire. The agony burned through me from the inside out, leaving me unable to make a sound.

All I could do was watch helplessly as she leisurely walked back to the table.

Three years ago, I'd rejected my family's choice of mate for me and left Silvermoon Pack alone. I thought I'd found true love here.

It turned out that everything had been nothing more than wishful thinking on my part.

In my final moments, Dad's stern face appeared before my eyes.

How heartbroken would he be if he knew how much I'd suffered since leaving home?

Perhaps I'd never even see him again.

Just as my consciousness sank completely into darkness, the banquet hall doors were violently thrown open from the outside.

A howling wind rushed into the hall, extinguishing every candle on the banquet tables.

Pale moonlight poured through the wide-open door to illuminate a tall silhouette.

He wore a silver-white fur cloak. The Silvermoon Pack insignia was embroidered across his chest with two intertwined wolves.

His eyes, which were the same color as mine, swept over the guests frozen in place before finally settling on me.

He hurried to my side and crouched down. He gently brushed his fingers against my burning forehead before lifting my arm, which was beginning to turn dark purple.

He said nothing, but I saw him clenching his jaw.

At last, he spoke, and his deep voice brimmed with overwhelming fury. "Who gave her the wolfsbane potion?"

Silence filled the banquet hall.

Someone recognized the insignia on his chest and began trembling. Someone else even collapsed to the floor.

Alex stepped forward with a frown on his face. His voice carried a hint of hesitation and trembled slightly. "Who are you?"

Ryan Silvermoon slowly stood up and turned to face Alex.

He didn't answer. Instead, he pointed at Emily's pocket.

"That's my daughter's insignia. Who gave you the right to touch it?"

"You're–" Alex stared at the insignia, and his eyes went wide. He staggered backward.

"R-Ryan Silvermoon, the Alpha King from the north–" Alex murmured just as his face turned pale.

The day before the Full Moon Festival, Dad told me about Emily's final sentence. She hadn't been executed.Dad had spared her life."Her grandfather kneeled before me and begged for four days," Dad said calmly while holding his cup. "Emily has now been stripped of all her healer credentials and privileges. She's been sent to a labor camp in the southern mines where she'll remain for the rest of her life."She later wrote a confession herself, detailing every prohibited potion she'd concocted, who she'd targeted, and the exact dates and times she'd administered the poison. She even included instructions for removing the remaining toxins from someone's system. However–""What do they want in return?" I asked."Her grandfather wants to use the mining rights and her confession to negotiate a ten-year reduction in her sentence." Dad glanced at me. "I haven't agreed or refused on your behalf. This concerns you, so you should decide for yourself."I was silent for a while before answer

Alex dropped to his knees at the foot of the steps. His knees struck the cold stone. He looked up at me desperately."Do you know what Emily told me before every treatment over the past three years?" I asked. My voice was calmer than I'd expected. "She said you agreed to it each time. Before every session, she'd come to you for your signature. You signed those consent forms 22 times."Alex's lips instantly turned pale."I begged you 22 times," I said. "And every single time, you told me to endure it a little longer."My voice didn't tremble because I'd spent three years rehearsing every word I wanted to say.I pulled my hands out of my fur cloak and held them out toward him with my palms facing up.I then said the words I'd never imagined saying in all those years."I, Elena Silvermoon, reject you, Alex Darknight, as my mate!"The moment our mate bond was severed, a fierce wind swept across the ground and carried swirling snow between us.Alex let out a heart-wrenching howl an

Lucas Greyhound stood by the window. It seemed like he had paused briefly during his patrol. When he saw me slowly approaching in my fur cloak, he turned to face me."Ms. Silvermoon." He lowered his head respectfully."What are you looking at?"He hesitated for a moment before pointing outside.I saw a gentle slope covered in snow. Beyond that was a pine forest at the edge of the tundra."The wind isn't too strong tonight," he said. "You can see the pine trees along the border. In another month, they'll start sprouting new buds."I followed his gaze and looked out at the hazy, silver-white landscape.Something suddenly occurred to me. "Did I meet you when I was little?"He froze for a moment, and the tips of his ears turned red."It was during the Full Moon Festival. You were riding along the border with Alpha back then. I was at the very end of the formation. You smiled in my direction when you passed by." He paused."I've remembered that smile for nineteen years," he added

"You've been asleep for three days." Dad's usually authoritative voice sounded exhausted as he spoke beside me. "The healers took turns treating you. It took three rounds of treatment to get all the poison out of your system."I struggled to turn my head and look at him, only to notice the gray at his temples."Dad, I'm sorry."He looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, and I'd never seen him look so haggard. His lips moved a little, but no words came out. Instead, he pressed my hand against his forehead. He then handed me a cup of warm water.I took a sip. The warm liquid slid down my dry, aching throat. At last, I found my voice again.I set the cup on the nightstand and asked, "Dad, what happened that night? What happened to them?"Dad leaned back in his chair and folded his hands over his chest. He watched me for a moment as if deciding where to begin."While you were unconscious these past three days, the royal guards interrogated everyone in the banquet hall one by one. Dad turned around and lifted me out of the chair.Curled up in his arms, I breathed in his familiar scent. The last thread of restraint I'd held onto for three years finally snapped.Tears welled up in my eyes.My lips moved, and I managed to force out a broken syllable. "D-Dad."Dad lowered his head and pressed his forehead against my burning one. "I'm here, my little darling. Just hold on a little longer."He carried me toward the exit.Alex's hoarse voice came from behind us. "Wait! She's your daughter? Why didn't she tell me?"Dad didn't answer. He stepped over the shattered glass and spilled champagne. I was leaving behind three years of lies as we headed straight for the banquet hall doors."You're not entitled to know."Twelve royal guards from the north emerged from the blizzard and formed a tight formation to completely surround the banquet hall."Not a single person leaves." Ryan's voice drifted back from the doorway. It was calm, and yet it carried an authority no
