SAME HOUR

IMPERIAL PALACE, VALEDRIA

LOTUS POND, EASTERN PALACE

The lotus pond was deserted, disturbed only by the chirping of crickets and the occasional croak of frogs hopping in and out of the water.

A young lady with waist length dark hair, dressed in a pale-blue silk gown with fitted sleeves and a long overdress of darker shade draped over her shoulders stood by the side of the pond, staring down at it quietly.

The evening air blew softly across the vicinity, moving strands of her loosely tied hair. It was unknown what she was pondering about but her quiet demeanor coupled with the silence around, gave her an otherworldly feel.

Then, without warning, a cloaked figure emerged from the bushes behind her.

They moved silently.

Within seconds, they were directly behind her.

A pair of delicate hands reached out from underneath the cloak, and shoved her into the pond. The lady fell in, stumbled due to the force and hit her head on the rocks in the pond.

A pool of blood quickly flowed inside the pond, staining the pale blue water red.

The culprit froze.

For a moment, they stared at the blood in horror, seemingly startled by how violently the situation had escalated.

Then they seemed to regain their senses.

Without another glance at the pond, they turned and hurried away.

The pond slowly fell silent again.

At its center, the young lady's body floated beneath the surface, against the spreading crimson of her blood. The color slowly consumed the water around her, turning the once-clear pond red while her body remained eerily motionless in the middle.

Seraphine's eyes snapped open.

She was surrounded by complete darkness, unable to see a thing.

Before she could understand what was happening, her lungs convulsed and water rushed into her mouth.

She was sinking.

Her body jerked violently as panic seized her. She tried to wrench herself free, but her limbs felt strangely weak. Her hands clawed desperately through the water.

Then voices reached her through the surface of the water.

"She's in the pond!"

A pair of hands suddenly seized her arms.

"Quickly! Pull her out!"

"Your Highness!”

Seraphine's brows twitched.

Your Highness?

More hands grabbed her, and she was dragged upward. Her head soon broke through the water surface, and she coughed violently.

Water poured from her mouth as someone pulled her onto solid ground.

"She's breathing!"

"Get blankets!"

"Don't just stand there! Move!"

Voices came from every direction.

Seraphine lay motionless, struggling to understand what was happening.

Her entire body trembled uncontrollably. Her chest and stomach burned from the water she had swallowed.

She tried to open her eyes wider, but the sudden brightness stabbed into them, forcing her to squint.

Everything remained blurred as figures moved around her.

She could make out the hems of layered skirts moving around her.

Maids?

Where am I?

One of them knelt beside her.

"Your Highness, can you hear me?"

Seraphine tried to answer, but her throat refused to cooperate.

She coughed again.

The maid immediately began crying.

"She's alive."

Another woman covered her mouth.

"Thank God."

Seraphine's mind struggled to process their words.

Something was wrong.

She tried to lift her hand.

But, the arm that moved felt strangely weak, small and delicate.

Her fingers trembled against the stone floor.

What happened to me?

Just then, approaching footsteps drew everyone's attention.

The frantic voices around her suddenly quieted, and she heard someone whisper.

"The Crown Prince."

Another maid immediately lowered her head.

"The Crown Prince is here."

Seraphine's blurred gaze shifted toward the approaching figure.

At first, she could make out only dark fabric. Then, his black polished boots.

They stopped several feet from her.

She tried to focus, but her vision continued swimming in and out of clarity. She could barely make out the embroidered hem of the man's dark robe.

He stood before her.

She couldn't see his face. Only his shoes, and the shadow he cast over her.

Then, she heard his voice which was cold, calm and direct.

"Get the Imperial Physician."

The order was quiet.

Yet every person around her immediately obeyed.

"Yes, Your Highness."

Someone hurried away.

Seraphine stared at the unfamiliar figure.

Crown Prince?

She didn't understand.

What kingdom was this?

Why were they calling her Your Highness?

And why—

Why did her body feel so wrong?

She tried to speak.

"Who..."

The word barely escaped her throat before another cough seized her.

The Crown Prince's feet shifted slightly.

His voice came again.

"Don't move."

Seraphine's eyes narrowed.

Something about the command irritated her.

Instinctively, she tried to push herself upright but pain exploded through her head. The room tilted, and her vision darkened at the edges.

The last thing she heard was the Crown Prince's voice.

"She is losing consciousness again."

Then everything disappeared.

THE IMPERIAL HALLVALEDRIAThe Imperial Hall stood at the heart of the palace, beyond the Grand Court. Its vaulted ceiling rose high above rows of deep-blue banners bearing the Valedrian dragon, while tall arched windows cast pale morning light across the stone floor. At the far end of the chamber, the throne stood upon a raised marble dais. No one sat upon it yet.By the time the assembly gathered, the hall was already filled with low conversation.Officials stood beneath the high stone arches, gathered in twos and threes as they spoke amongst themselves. Their dark coats and long military tunics were cut neatly against their bodies, the high collars fastened beneath their throats. Gold and silver embroidery marked their different ranks without becoming excessive. A few wore cloaks bearing the colors of their houses, while the military commanders favored simpler coats that left little room for ornament. The men spoke in hushed voices, discussing matters of state while keeping a care

For several seconds, neither of them moved.Seraphine stared at the man standing in the doorway. The Crown Prince stared back. His gaze moved over her face before settling on the letter in her hand.Seraphine's eyes followed his, and she was momentarily flustered. Not because of his appearance. She had seen enough half-naked men in military camps to know better than to be flustered by a man's bare chest. It was simply because she had been caught snooping around in his personal space. But, she didn't let it show on her face.Without a word, she returned the document to the narrow gap between the leather-bound volumes. Then she turned away from him."I'll give you a moment to dress."The man watched her turn away and raised a brow. She was quite calm for a noble lady standing in front of a half-naked man."There's no need."His voice stopped her.Seraphine glanced back.Lucien had already pulled his outer robe over his shoulders. He tied it slowly, then waved to whoever was behind him b

"Your Highness, this is what they sent you?" Seraphine glanced at the tray. "What is wrong with it?" Rosalie looked at her in disbelief. "What is wrong with it?" She placed the bowl back down with slightly more force than necessary. "Everything." Seraphine's eyes moved over the meal. There was a bowl of plain rice porridge, a small serving of steamed vegetables, a few slices of meat and nothing else. "Is this not enough?" she asked. Rosalie's mouth fell open. "Enough?" She pointed accusingly at the tray. "Your Highness, you nearly drowned last night. You lost blood, struck your head and have been unconscious since then. And this is what they send you?" She shook her head furiously. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think they were feeding an ordinary servant." Seraphine picked up the small p

CROWN PRINCESS'S QUARTERS EASTERN WING, IMPERIAL PALACE The next time Seraphine's eyes opened, she was lying on a soft mattress. Her head no longer hurt as badly, and her vision had cleared considerably. Instead, a faint scent of sandalwood and incense surrounded her, making her feel groggy and weak. But at least she could see her surroundings now. A tall canopy stood above her, its pale curtains hanging loosely around the bed. Where was she? She stared upward as the events before she lost consciousness slowly returned to her. The water, the maids, the Crown Prince. She remembered the strange sensation of her hands feeling too small and unfamiliar. Seraphine slowly lifted one into view. A slender, pale hand with delicate fingers stared back at her. She flexed them several times. No, this was not hers. Her gaze swept across the room. It was spacious without being excessively decorated. Pale curtains surrounded the bed, while dark wooden furniture occupied the corners.

KINGDOM OF VALEDRIA NORTHERN FRONTIER YEAR 456 The battle to seize Elden was underway. The two armies, distinct by their bloodied blue and red banners, were fully embroiled in the decisive battle to capture the city. The Norhaven army had suffered heavy losses, with the majority of its forces fallen outside the city gates despite their firm hold within. At this point, Elden's gates were the only thing standing between the Valedrian army and victory. At the forefront of the Valedrian army sat a female figure on a grey-black horse. Black armor covered her from throat to waist, its surface dulled by the dust and battle. A few loose strands had escaped the long black ponytail hanging down her back, brushing against the plates between her shoulders whenever the winter wind swept across the plain. There was nothing delicate about the way she sat her horse. Yet beneath the hard lines of the armor was a face almost too beautiful for a battlefield, with sharp brows, clear skin
