Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
I laughed self-deprecatingly as I watched the elevator go up. I clicked on my email and read through the numerous job invitations I received daily.

For the first time, I actually replied to them.

Chad: [Dear Mr. Smith, I would like to accept the offer to join your company. I will arrive at the Halveston airport tomorrow.]

The Human Resources Department of this huge overseas company seemed to be waiting for my reply because they responded almost instantly.

HR: [Dear Mr. Lyman, don't worry. Our company will provide you with the most competitive salary in the market and a suitable environment that we're confident you’ll be happy with."

I went home to pack right away and bought my flight tickets, which my new company was sponsoring. Before the end of the day, I returned to my current company to hand in my resignation.

The company's celebration party was about to end, and Emily was giving her speech on stage. She looked up, but she slowly turned away when she saw that it was me. Once everyone had left, I followed her into her office.

Emily sat in her chair and suddenly said, "Ivan, please massage my shoulders."

Ivan came forward and purposely bumped into me before massaging Emily's shoulders with relish. He looked at me gleefully and mouthed two words at me.

"You're trash!"

Emily and I had been together for ten years, but she had never let me get as close to her as Ivan did. At first, she said she was shy, but later she claimed we should not be so lovey-dovey since we had already been together for some time.

In truth, she had just never really accepted me.

Emily purposely ignored me and picked up a proposal on her desk to read it. "Why aren't you saying anything? Is this the right attitude for an apology?"

I placed my resignation letter on her desk. "Please sign this, Miss Stewart."

Emily continued looking at the proposal. She flipped the page and said with a snigger, "Isn't it a little old-fashioned to be writing an apology to me? I can't believe you think this will work. Read it to me, Ivan."

Ivan could not help smiling, and he picked up my resignation letter right away. He cleared his throat and read, "Resignation—"

When Emily heard that word, she lost her composure and slammed the proposal on her desk. She glanced at me before snatching the letter from Ivan's hand, reading it quickly. Her clutch tightened on the letter, and she crumpled it.

"You're being ridiculous, Chad! I was about to forgive you if you had come here to apologize sincerely, but you're taking this too far!"

I replied calmly, "Miss Stewart, aside from my resignation, I'd like to demand the wages you owe me from the last ten years. I don't want any stock options.

“After my monthly expenses of $1,000, my remaining wages would be $5,000 a month. Ten years' worth of wages totals $600,000. Please inform the Finance Department to transfer the money to my bank account."

Emily looked at me in disbelief, trembling with anger. "What do you mean, the wages you’re owed? Didn't you say all your money belongs to me? You told me that you didn't care about money!"

When she saw that I was serious, she swiped everything off her desk in anger and looked at me with disappointment. "I was wrong about you, Chad. You're just like Ivan! All you care about is money.

"No, I take that back. Ivan is better than you are.

“At least he never asks me for money, while you keep mentioning money just because you had a minor achievement. You disgust me!"

Was I more disgusting than Ivan? Was Ivan, the man who abandoned her at the first sign of trouble, humiliated her with his new girlfriend, and ordered his bodyguards to beat her up until she was nearly paralyzed, better than I was?

He never asked Emily for money because she always gave it to him without him having to ask. He was always in a bespoke suit and looked like the elegant rich heir he once was.

Every time we met clients together, they always mistook him for the lead and me for his assistant.

I could no longer take the pain in my heart.

I said with difficulty, "It doesn't matter what you think, Miss Stewart. I just want what I deserve."

Ivan gave the driver a look, and the driver stepped hard on the gas pedal, bringing us onto a small road in the wilderness. I wanted to call the police, but I realized the car had been fitted with a signal jammer.I was at my wits' end.Suddenly, the driver parked and pulled a black cloth over my head and Sarah's. We were both forced to shuffle forward. When we saw light again, Ivan and I were tied up right in front of a deep abyss that was about three feet away from us.It was a shocking sight. I yelled, "Are you crazy, Ivan?!"There was a crazy look in Ivan's eyes. "Yes, I'm crazy! I'm the Perkins family’s noble heir. How can a random orphan be better than I am? Once Emily arrives, you'll find out that you'll never be better than I am!"I had no idea what to say. All I wanted was to live a peaceful life. Why did he have to drag me into such dramatic situations? I had never thought about comparing myself with him. However, I was now more worried about Sarah's safety."Where wa

"I don't need any of these things, Emily."Emily was almost going crazy. "Then tell me, what do you want?"I smiled in exasperation. "I want you not to appear in my life. Can you do that?"Even at this moment, Emily still did not understand what she had done wrong. All she could do was stare back at me blankly. She was too busy being in love to understand how it felt to be ignored and be the second choice.I packed up everything she had brought and said to her solemnly, "We aren't suitable for each other, Emily. That's all. I wish you all the best in finding happiness."However, Emily stood obstinately at my door, staring at me. "Tell me, what do you want? I can give it to you, no matter what it is! Ivan is no longer any fun for me, and I don't feel like continuing my game with him. I want to be with you. Since you left, I've had a hard time sleeping over the last month. I…"I knew that she was just suffering from withdrawal symptoms. After all, I had always given in to her every

None of these so-called friends would probably say a thing against Emily even if she slapped them hard. She was the CEO of a listed company, after all, and everyone wanted to be in her good books. I did not want to make things difficult either, so I replied simply. Chad: [Enough. My mind is made up.]I put down my phone and knocked on Sarah's door. She reached out for the lunch box excitedly and said, "I’ve been looking forward to your home-cooked food all day, Chad! It tastes great. I love it so much!"Sarah went into her room and came out with a scarf, and she said while blushing, "We’re still in the middle of the cold months here, Chad. I noticed you don't own a scarf, so I bought some wool thread and knitted one for you. I hope you like it."It warmed my heart to receive such a gift from her. I lowered my head, hinting for Sarah to put it around my neck.Sarah held her breath as she came close to me nervously, and she reached out to me with the scarf. She was so close that I

"That's right, Chad. Ivan can't compare to you. I'll chase him away right now!"Someone started to push Ivan out, but Ivan looked up at Emily, looking like the victim. He lowered his head as he teared up, looking like he had been bullied badly. When he saw Emily turning to look at him, he went all out by falling hard onto the ground.Emily's eyes widened right away, and she turned pale. She yelled, pushed the friend aside, and shielded Ivan behind her like a protective mother hen. "What are you doing?! Are you crazy?"Ivan looked gleeful as he popped his head out from behind Emily, making a face at everyone present. Everyone clenched their fists and said sternly, "Are you delusional, Emily? He's obviously putting on an act! He was never a good person. Just think about how he used to treat you!"However, Ivan started sobbing and showed Emily his slightly scratched hand. "Em, it wasn't easy for you to make so many friends. I don't want you to get on their bad side because of me.

Emily's latest text popped up on my phone. Emily: [When do you want to have the wedding?]Ivan immediately helped Emily pick up her phone, and when he saw the text she sent, he looked up at me viciously. He looked like he wanted to murder me. "Who did you say was leaving the country?" Emily asked again while staring straight at me.Everyone looked surprised and started speaking at the same time. "Chad is leaving the country to work on a project, and he won't be back for several years. Don't you know about it?""Didn't Chad discuss this with you, Emily? His flight is today."Emily stood up right away and looked at me from the opposite side of the table, saying grimly, "Explain yourself, Chad!"I found it ridiculous. Why was she mad? If I left, she could be with Ivan publicly. She should be grateful that I gave them my blessing. I replied nonchalantly, "They're right. I'm leaving the country."Emily's long lashes fluttered as she blinked. There was a blank look on her face. S

Emily accidentally bumped into the tables and rattled the plates, which clinked loudly enough to distract her.She looked away from me to say nonchalantly, "It's fine. I don't care anyway."I replied, "I stayed at a hotel because I have no home, Miss Stewart. It's just a coincidence that I'm here to have my meal. I have no intention of giving you any trouble."Emily stood up right away and was about to yell at me when Liam appeared. He put his hand over my shoulder and said with a smile, "What are you standing around here for, Chad? Everyone has arrived. Come into the private room. It's time to eat!" He turned and saw Emily. Assuming we were still together, he invited her along. "Why have you started without us, Emily? Come on in!" Emily looked at me in a fluster, but Ivan tugged at her sleeve, hinting with his eyes not to join us. However, she ignored him and came along with me. Ivan had no choice but to follow behind her with an unhappy look on his face. The private room
