Chapter 15: The Distance Between Blood And Love

The question did not disappear after it was spoken.

It remained in the room, heavier than the rain, heavier than the secrets, heavier than the vows Zara had made only hours ago.

What if we’re related?

Adrian looked away first.

Daniel stood slowly from the chair, his face lined with exhaustion.

“No,” he said quietly. “I don’t believe you are.”

Zara’s heart stumbled between relief and fear.

“You don’t believe, or you know?”

The distinction mattered.

Daniel rubbed a hand over his face before answering.

“I know Isabella was your mother. I know I am your father. And I know the Moretti family never accepted the possibility of your existence.”

“That still doesn’t answer the question.”

His silence lasted too long.

Adrian spoke before he could.

“The birthmark proves nothing.”

Zara turned to him.

“You’re sure?”

“No,” he admitted. “I’m being rational.”

The honesty should have reassured her.

It didn’t.

Daniel moved to the table and opened the leather folder. He pulled out the hospital records and spread them beneath the firelight.

“These documents were altered,” he said. “But not in the way you think.”

Zara watched him carefully.

“The male infant transferred at 02:14 was Adrian.”

Adrian’s head lifted sharply.

“What?”

Daniel met his gaze.

“You were moved from the public maternity ward to a private wing after a complication during the delivery.”

Adrian stared at him, stunned.

“How do you know that?”

“Because I was there.”

The room went silent.

Zara looked from one man to the other.

“You were there for his birth?”

Daniel nodded once.

“I was a surgical resident at San Carlo Hospital. Isabella was admitted the same night.”

Adrian’s expression hardened with confusion.

“My family told me I was born in the private wing.”

“They told you the version that sounded cleaner.”

The fire crackled softly.

Zara tried to follow the pieces.

“So the transferred male infant was Adrian. The female infant discharged to a guardian was me.”

“Yes.”

“And the records were altered because my mother was unmarried.”

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“And because your mother was a Moretti.”

The last piece settled into place.

Not hidden because Zara was related to Adrian.

Hidden because she was related to Valentina’s family.

A different kind of danger.

Zara sank slowly into the armchair.

Her mind felt numb.

“She was his aunt?”

Adrian answered quietly. “If Isabella was my father’s sister, then yes.”

Zara looked at him.

Not husband.

Not stranger.

Family by marriage.

Not by blood.

Relief came so suddenly it almost hurt.

She hadn’t realized how tightly fear had been wrapped around her chest until it loosened.

Adrian seemed to feel it too.

His shoulders lowered for the first time that night.

Neither of them spoke about it.

Neither needed to.

Daniel watched them both with an expression that was impossible to read.

Then he said softly, “I should have told you years ago.”

Zara looked down at the photograph of Isabella.

“Why didn’t you?”

His answer came without hesitation.

“Because your mother begged me to protect you from the Morettis.”

The words chilled the room.

“Protect me from my own family?”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s voice was low. “From Valentina?”

Daniel looked at him for a long moment.

“Your mother loved Isabella once.”

The surprise on Adrian’s face was genuine.

“Then what happened?”

Daniel’s expression grew distant, as if he were looking through the fire into another year.

“Power happened.”

Rain tapped against the windows.

He continued.

“When Isabella became pregnant, she refused to name the father. Valentina believed the scandal would destroy the family at the worst possible time. There were inheritance disputes, political negotiations, business deals balanced on reputation.”

Zara listened in silence.

“Isabella wanted to keep the baby. Valentina wanted the situation contained.”

Contained.

Such a polite word for a life.

“So she hid me.”

“She arranged for your records to be sealed and for me to take you home after the birth.”

Zara stared at him.

“You agreed.”

The accusation slipped out before she could stop it.

Pain crossed his face.

“I loved her.”

The simplicity of it stole her next breath.

For the first time, she saw not a man who had hidden the truth, but a man who had lost someone and spent twenty five years carrying the promise that remained.

“She died a few hours after you were born,” he said quietly. “And I became the only person left who knew where you were.”

Silence filled the cottage.

The fire had burned lower now, casting softer shadows across the walls.

Adrian stood and walked to the window.

Water streamed down the glass.

Without turning around, he asked, “Why reopen the file now?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

This was the part he had not wanted to reach.

“Because someone else found it first.”

Adrian turned sharply.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Your mother.”

The room went still again.

“She came to me three weeks ago. She knew Zara was Isabella’s daughter.”

Zara felt cold all over.

“She knew before the engagement?”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“And she arranged the marriage anyway.”

Daniel nodded.

For a moment, anger flashed across Adrian’s face so openly that Zara almost stepped back.

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he reached into his jacket and removed a folded envelope, far older than the others.

The paper was yellowed with age.

On the front, in faded ink, were the words:

For Valentina, if I do not survive.

Zara stared at it.

“Is that my mother’s handwriting?”

“Yes.”

Adrian crossed the room slowly, eyes fixed on the envelope.

“You’ve had this for twenty five years?”

“I was supposed to destroy it after giving it to Valentina.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Daniel looked at the flames.

“Because I read it.”

A long silence followed.

Then he added, almost in a whisper:

“And after I read it, I realized Isabella was afraid of someone.”

The fire seemed to dim.

Zara’s pulse quickened.

“Who?”

Daniel looked up.

Not at her.

At Adrian.

And when he spoke, his voice was filled with a fear that had survived a quarter of a century.

“Your father.”

For several seconds, nobody moved. The wheelchair remained in the doorway, its wheels still turning slightly from the force that had pushed it forward. The man sitting in it looked older than Zara remembered, though the last time she had seen him had been through photographs, recordings, documents, and stories told by people who had spent years either fearing him or obeying him.Vittorio Bellini.Alive.His hands rested quietly over a dark walking cane across his lap. His silver hair was thinner than it had been in the photographs. His face had sharpened with age, and his skin carried the pale, almost translucent look of someone who had spent too long away from sunlight. But his eyes were exactly the same.Cold.Observant.Calculating.They settled on Zara as though everyone else in the room had disappeared.Zara felt Adrian move closer beside her.“Stay behind me,” he whispered.Vittorio smiled. It wasn’t a warm smile. It was the faintest curve of amusement.“You still do that.”Adri

Zara couldn’t breathe. The young woman standing beside Isabella looked no older than twenty three. Her face was calm.Almost too calm. She had Isabella’s eyes. The same dark eyes Zara had spent her entire life trying to remember. But there was something else.Something painfully familiar. The shape of her mouth. The curve of her cheek. The way she tilted her head when she looked at Zara.Zara stared at her.“Another sister?”Isabella nodded.“Yes.”Sophia stepped forward.“No.”The young woman looked at her.Sophia’s face had gone completely pale.“You said I was the first.”“I said you were the first heir.”Sophia shook her head.“That’s not what you told me.”“I couldn’t tell you everything.”“You never can.”The bitterness in Sophia’s voice filled the room.Zara looked at Isabella.“How many children do you have?”Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.“Three.”Zara felt something inside her break.“Three?”Isabella nodded.“Sophia.”She looked at the first daughter.“Zara.”Then she l
