For a moment, no one moved.

The rain outside seemed to retreat into the distance, leaving only the crackle of the fire and the weight of Daniel’s words.

Your father.

Adrian stared at him as if he had spoken a language he no longer understood.

“My father is dead.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“I know.”

“Then how could Isabella be afraid of him?”

The older man looked down at the envelope in his hands.

“Because some fears survive the people who caused them.”

Zara felt a chill spread through her chest.

Adrian crossed the room and stopped beside the table.

“Tell me exactly what was in that letter.”

Daniel hesitated.

“I remember enough.”

“That’s not good enough anymore.”

The sharpness in Adrian’s voice made Zara look at him.

Anger was beginning to crack through his control.

Not anger at Daniel.

At the possibility that his entire family history had been built on lies.

Daniel unfolded the yellowed envelope carefully, as if it might fall apart in his hands.

Inside was a single sheet of paper, the ink faded but still legible.

He did not hand it over immediately.

Instead, he read aloud.

“Valentina, if anything happens to me, do not let him take the child. He will say he is protecting the family, but he is protecting himself. If I do not survive, make sure my daughter is raised far from the Moretti name.”

Silence.

Zara’s breath caught.

Adrian’s face had gone completely still.

“Is that all?”

Daniel looked down again.

“There’s more.”

His voice grew quieter.

You know what he did to the records.

Adrian’s head snapped up.

“What records?”

Daniel lowered the paper.

“She never explained.”

“But my mother knew.”

“Yes.”

The firelight flickered across Adrian’s face, and Zara saw something she had not seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For the truth.

He turned away abruptly and walked to the window.

Rain streamed down the glass, distorting the dark vineyard beyond.

“My father spent his entire life controlling information,” he said quietly. “Business records, legal records, medical records. Nothing left his hands without his approval.”

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Then you understand why Isabella was afraid.”

Adrian did not answer.

Zara looked between them.

“You’re talking about him as if he were dangerous.”

Daniel met her eyes.

“He was.”

The certainty in his voice made her stomach tighten.

“Did he hurt my mother?”

A long silence followed.

Finally, Daniel said, “I don’t know.”

The answer felt honest.

And somehow that made it worse.

Adrian turned back from the window.

“When did my father die?”

“Ten years ago,” Zara said automatically.

Adrian nodded, eyes still on Daniel.

“And when was Isabella’s file reopened for the first time?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Ten years ago.”

The room went cold.

Zara stared at him.

“The same year?”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“So someone reopened the file the year my father died.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And then it was sealed again.”

A thought struck Zara.

“Who sealed it?”

Neither man answered.

Which was answer enough.

Valentina.

Zara sank deeper into the chair.

Every path seemed to lead back to Adrian’s mother.

The marriage.

The hidden records.

The sealed file.

The silence.

Adrian took the letter from Daniel’s hand and read it himself.

His eyes moved slowly across the page.

Once.

Twice.

Then he stopped at the final line.

Zara watched his expression change.

Not shock.

Recognition.

“Adrian?”

He looked up.

“There’s a phrase here my father used to say.”

Daniel went very still.

“What phrase?”

Adrian read from the letter.

‘Protecting the family means protecting the future.’

The words seemed to drain the air from the room.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“He used that exact sentence?”

Adrian nodded.

“It was practically his motto.”

Zara felt her pulse quicken.

“So Isabella was referring to him directly.”

“Yes,” Adrian said quietly.

The realization settled heavily between them.

For the first time, the mystery had a clear shape.

Not a missing woman.

Not a hidden child.

A conflict inside the Moretti family itself.

Zara looked at the photograph of Isabella again.

“She trusted Valentina.”

Daniel’s expression grew complicated.

“She trusted the sister Valentina used to be.”

The distinction lingered.

Outside, thunder rolled across the vineyard.

Adrian folded the letter carefully and slipped it into the leather folder.

“What are you going to do?” Zara asked.

He looked at her.

“Find out what my father did to those records.”

“And if your mother is hiding it?”

His eyes darkened.

“Then I’ll ask her myself.”

Something in his voice made Daniel straighten.

“You can’t go back to the estate tonight.”

“Watch me.”

“This isn’t a business dispute, Adrian.”

“No,” he said softly. “It’s worse.”

The fire cracked sharply.

For a moment, all three of them were silent.

Then Zara noticed something.

Daniel’s hands were trembling.

Not from age.

Not from cold.

From pain.

She looked closer.

A dark stain was spreading through the side of his jacket.

“Dad.”

He looked up too quickly.

“What?”

“You’re bleeding.”

Adrian moved immediately.

Daniel tried to stand, but his knees buckled.

Zara caught his arm as Adrian pulled the jacket aside.

Beneath the soaked fabric, blood had spread across his shirt.

A gunshot wound.

Not fresh.

But not old enough to ignore.

Zara’s heart lurched.

“When did this happen?”

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

“At the archive.”

“You were shot?”

“It went through.”

Adrian pressed a towel against the wound.

“You should have told us.”

Daniel let out a weak breath that might have been a laugh.

“You had enough family revelations for one night.”

“Adrian,” Zara said, panic rising, “he needs a hospital.”

“No,” Daniel said sharply.

Both of them looked at him.

“If I go to a hospital, they’ll find me.”

“Who will?”

Daniel’s eyes met Adrian’s.

And for the first time that night, the answer came without hesitation.

“Your mother.”

For several seconds, nobody moved. The wheelchair remained in the doorway, its wheels still turning slightly from the force that had pushed it forward. The man sitting in it looked older than Zara remembered, though the last time she had seen him had been through photographs, recordings, documents, and stories told by people who had spent years either fearing him or obeying him.Vittorio Bellini.Alive.His hands rested quietly over a dark walking cane across his lap. His silver hair was thinner than it had been in the photographs. His face had sharpened with age, and his skin carried the pale, almost translucent look of someone who had spent too long away from sunlight. But his eyes were exactly the same.Cold.Observant.Calculating.They settled on Zara as though everyone else in the room had disappeared.Zara felt Adrian move closer beside her.“Stay behind me,” he whispered.Vittorio smiled. It wasn’t a warm smile. It was the faintest curve of amusement.“You still do that.”Adri

Zara couldn’t breathe. The young woman standing beside Isabella looked no older than twenty three. Her face was calm.Almost too calm. She had Isabella’s eyes. The same dark eyes Zara had spent her entire life trying to remember. But there was something else.Something painfully familiar. The shape of her mouth. The curve of her cheek. The way she tilted her head when she looked at Zara.Zara stared at her.“Another sister?”Isabella nodded.“Yes.”Sophia stepped forward.“No.”The young woman looked at her.Sophia’s face had gone completely pale.“You said I was the first.”“I said you were the first heir.”Sophia shook her head.“That’s not what you told me.”“I couldn’t tell you everything.”“You never can.”The bitterness in Sophia’s voice filled the room.Zara looked at Isabella.“How many children do you have?”Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.“Three.”Zara felt something inside her break.“Three?”Isabella nodded.“Sophia.”She looked at the first daughter.“Zara.”Then she l

“Hello, daughters.”Zara couldn’t move. The man stood at the bottom of the staircase as though he had simply walked into an ordinary room instead of appearing inside a hidden vault that had been buried for twenty five years. His face was older than it had been in the photograph. There were lines around his eyes now, silver threaded through his dark hair, and a faint scar ran from his temple toward his jaw.But Zara knew him.She had seen that face in photographs. She had seen it beside Isabella.Beside Lucien.Beside the woman who had once held her as a baby.Matteo.Her supposed father. The man she had just been told wasn’t her biological father. The man everyone claimed had disappeared twenty five years ago.Her lips parted.“Matteo?”His smile faded.“Yes.”Sophia took a step backward.“No.”Matteo looked at her.“Sophia.”She shook her head.“You’re dead.”“So are half the people in this agreement.”His voice was calm.“Death was the easiest way to hide.”Zara stared at him.“You
