Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Matcha Time
I only replied: [Getting divorced.]

After signing the papers, I ducked outside Nathan's office, shaking.

[William, I think I'm about to lose my home.]

No dad. No mom. No brother. Not even the dog I loved more than most people.

And now? No Nathan.

What was even left?

Didn't expect his reply:

[Why don't you just marry me?]

Inside, the circus rolled on.

"Yeah right, like Joelle's actually pulling off a divorce. The second she dumps Nathan, she'll forget how to speak."

"If she ends up in court, she'll totally lose it. Full meltdown."

"Really?" Nathan let out a laugh.

Tossed his lighter on the table. "Even if she's bawling in court, she'll come crawling back and do whatever I say."

I stared through the door crack at the guy who used to be my everything—and now looked like a complete stranger.

And I texted William:

[Okay.]

***

William sent me a checklist.

Stuff to get done in a month:

Visa? Yep. Legal papers? Obviously.

But then came his real priority—like twenty places I just had to eat at before leaving the country.

He messaged: [Carmorian food abroad tastes terrible. Trust me.]

I laughed and took it seriously.

Started checking off restaurants like it was my new job.

Living alone suddenly didn't suck so much.

I ate, shopped, packed like a pro.

Then the day I finally ditched Nathan's place, he texted:

[Not gonna call me? Don't you miss me?]

Seriously? He was out vacationing with Sophie, doing the whole "let me show you the world" act.

Then came another text: [Bad girl.]

And a photo:

[Nice place. Should I bring you here for our anniversary too?]

Block him? I wanted to. The way I blocked Sophie without blinking.

But I still had to show up in court to collect the official papers, so I bit my tongue.

The next two weeks were a blur.

Sold off my jewelry, a couple bags.

Went to the hospital for a full checkup—just in case. Made sure I wasn't pregnant.

Then I started sorting through all the assets Nathan had left in my care over the years.

Night before the court date, he finally rolled back into Seavora.

Called like it was some casual catch-up.

"Joelle, you moved out?"

***

He was used to me staying quiet on the phone.

Laughed to himself. "You're too cute. I told you, it's all just for show."

Then, all chipper: "Let's make the act complete. Tomorrow, come with me to pick up the decree."

I gripped my phone.

He started, "Joelle, relax, it's just—"

"Okay," I cut in.

A loud cheer exploded on his end.

I hung up.

Sent him the appointment time right after.

Next morning, I got up early.

Nathan showed up late. Of course.

And yeah, Sophie left a faint bite mark on his lip—he pretended it wasn't there.

So did I.

Whole thing was over in five minutes. Even faster than last time.

"Nathan, I've got a surprise for you tomorrow," he said, kicking my leg.

I slid the decree into my bag.

"Nathan, you free tonight?" I asked. "There's something I want to tell you."

He froze.

Ever since we got married, I'd only ever called him 'Honey.'

Then he smiled, flicked his copy of the decree. "Sure."

***

No matter who Nathan turned into this past year, I couldn't completely erase the version of him from before.

I was still grateful—for the years he stuck around, for the way he used to care.

So yeah, I hadn't planned to leave without saying goodbye.

But then the storm rolled in.

Thunder. Lightning.

I hated nights like this.

The crash had happened on a night just like this.

"I only said that stuff to Sophie 'cause I wasn't thinking—it was a mistake! She was manipulative, okay? She seduced me! I never wanted a divorce. Remember I said I had a surprise? I was gonna propose again the next day! Joelle, this is all just a huge mix-up! That night—I was heading to the apartment to find you, but Paul dragged me out drinking!""Right," I said, voice low as I stared at his tear-streaked face. "Always someone else's fault, huh?"The condoms? What, someone snuck them into your pocket?"The bed? Let me guess—somebody pushed you into it?"And all those disgusting, soul-crushing things you said to me? That just wasn't you?"My words came out sharp. No pauses. No stumbles."You really thought I'd never leave. So you looked down on me, ignored me, tore me apart. Mocking me, stomping me down—that's the only way you felt important in your pathetic little life, isn't it?"The Ziegler family had two sons.Kayden ran the family empire.Nathan? Just a spoiled rich kid

My ears buzzed. Blood boiling.Of course.Nathan.Standing at our gate, ranting like a lunatic, with a mob of livestreamers recording every second."Windsor Corp's CEO thinks he's untouchable! Everyone, you're my witnesses—I'm seeing my wife today, no matter what!"I grabbed the docs I printed earlier and flew downstairs.Totally blanked that I'd sent the staff out. No one else home.Totally blanked how media flashing in my face after the accident used to mess me up.Totally blanked that my voice would be gone in a panic. But when you're protecting something that matters, fear kinda shuts up.I marched out and yanked the door open."Joelle..." Nathan's face lit up.I slapped him. Hard."Nathan Ziegler! Go look in a mirror! What made you think I'd ever crawl back to you?!"Another slap."And what gives you the nerve to spew lies and stir up drama?!"One more for good measure.I chucked the printed chat logs at his chest."Read it. And stop dragging 'childhood sweethear

I jabbed the basement button fast.Right before the doors shut, William tilted my chin and kissed me harder—right in Nathan's face.***Word on the street? Nathan got grounded—by his own family. They yanked his phone, laptop, everything. Total lockdown. He could only go free if he swore to quit bugging me.Meanwhile, William and I hit Borevia City.We were gonna get our foreign marriage certified, but William wasn't about that paperwork life. Dude just dragged me to city hall and got a local one. Easy.I met his friends and family, too.Turns out the gossip was spot-on.He's the oldest son and grandson. His mom died young, and his dad dropped from a heart attack when he was eighteen. The uncles? Zero chance at the throne, so they played nice. His friends were cool, polite—Well, minus one guy. Probably his BFF.He just straight-up laughed and went, "Bro, you finally lost your virginity."Hold up.He's in his thirties... and still a what?Anyway, it'd been like two week

He kept going. "His wife's showing up too. So do us all a favor and act like you've got some manners. Embarrass my family, and trust me—my mom and brother won't let it slide."He reached for my hand again. I jerked it back."Joelle!"He raised his voice.Heads turned.William looked over too—his eyes narrowed."Nathan, what now?" Olivia called, her tone aimed at him but her glare stuck on me.Kayden shot me a quick frown before turning to William with a polite smile. "Your wife must be here. Want me to go welcome her?"The whispers kicked in.Nathan leaned in, voice sharp. "Told you not to cause a scene. Happy now? First time meeting my whole family and this is your move?"Oh, totally. Three years of marriage, and this was my big Ziegler debut."Joelle," William called. "Come here."There was an open seat—right between him and Olivia.Nathan stiffened.Olivia and Kayden? Same.I strolled over."Let me introduce her," William said, voice calm but sharp enough to slice th

William didn't just send over a few dresses. He sent an entire boutique.Racks on racks of clothes, shoes lined up like they were on display, jewelry sparkling under the lights—and a whole glam squad to top it off. The room looked like a fashion week backstage. And with him going all out like that, I couldn't exactly slack. So I tried on outfit after outfit, switching nonstop, practically till late night. In the end, I chose something simple and sweet. Nothing loud—just soft and low-key.Good thing William hadn't come back yet. He hadn't stepped foot in Carmoria in a decade except when he took me abroad last time, and now that he was finally visiting the Seavora branch in person, he was buried in work.I ended up sleeping half the next day away.By the time I opened my eyes, it was already afternoon.I got ready, did my makeup, and just as I was finishing up, a message popped up from William:[Driver's on the way to pick you up.]Right when I got in the car, my phone rang—ra
