Chapter 1

Winter nights came early in New York. The river outside the Hudson Hotel was pitch-black, but the ballroom still blazed with light. Waiters pushed silver carts between the tables, their wheels rolling almost silently over the carpet.

Gianna picked up the place card with her name on it and set it down in front of me.

"Sit here." She signed the words slowly, as if she were afraid I'd miss them, then smiled and repeated them aloud. "You'll be closer to Mom."

I pushed the card back and caught her hand under the tablecloth.

"Together," I signed.

She understood, and her eyes crinkled as she smiled. When my family found me two years ago, plenty of people expected us to fight for our place in the family. Gianna had been part of the family for 26 years, but she was the first to learn sign language so she could communicate with me.

My mother, Sofia, slid a small plate over to me. It held a nut-free dessert. She didn't ask why I wasn't eating the prettier dessert everyone else had. My brother Nico had told her long ago that I was allergic to nuts.

In this family, my silence was never a mystery anyone had to solve. Someone always saved me a seat. Someone always remembered what I couldn't eat. Whenever someone told a joke, everyone waited until Gianna finished signing it before laughing.

When I first came home, I always sat with my back against a wall and checked to make sure the door wasn't locked. My mother had someone remove the old bolt on my bedroom door, the kind that could only be locked from the outside. She never asked me why. She simply said that anyone who lived here should be able to open their own door.

Later, Gianna tied a blue ribbon around the doorknob so I could find the handle in the dark. The ribbon was still there. I no longer needed to check the door every day, but I'd never asked anyone to take it off.

Tonight my father, Vittorio Moretti, was going to announce that our family was getting out of the illegal side of the port and casino businesses.

The invitations called it the Moretti Foundation Medical Center's annual fundraiser, but the briefcase my brother Matteo Moretti kept beside him held the trust documents.

The legitimate logistics company would continue operating. The businesses built on guns and threats would be handed over one by one.

I knew none of it was clean, and signing his name wouldn't wipe it clean. But at least my father was ready to start.

Lorenzo Moretti, my eldest brother and the underboss, stood at the entrance, his tie pulled tight around his neck. His eyes followed everyone who came through the door. Matteo sat at the lawyers' table, checking the page numbers one last time. Dante wore an earpiece and glanced up at the cameras near the ceiling every few minutes. Nico returned from the medical center's pop-up first-aid station and asked me, "Crowded in here. You doing okay?"

I shook my head. The truth was, whenever there was a crowd, the first thing I did was count the exits. Two doors on the left, one through the kitchen, windows that didn't open. Nico didn't push. He just set a glass of warm water in front of me.

Before my father went up on stage, he looked back at us. His gaze lingered on me for less time than on anyone else, as if even one extra second might make me think he was about to ask about my past again. I raised a hand and signed, "All good." He let out a breath.

He'd asked if I wanted to come tonight. I'd signed yes, but he'd still asked Gianna to double-check with me, then saved me the seat closest to an exit. My father had the power to decide other people's futures, yet he still awkwardly waited for my approval over the smallest things. I thought I understood at least a little of what it would cost him to sign everything away tonight.

The Moretti family's advisor leaned in and murmured something in his ear. All I caught was "Sicily" and "the port." My father's answer was perfectly clear. "If they have something to say, they can come to my office tomorrow. Tonight, I sign first."

The pen on stage hadn't touched the paper yet when the ballroom doors swung open.

Representatives from the eight families filed in one after another. Some brought bodyguards, others brought only lawyers, and a few stopped at the door and refused to come any farther. Luca Vitale came in last, his charcoal coat spotless. He walked right past Lorenzo and headed straight for my father.

Lorenzo moved to intercept him. Luca didn't even look at him. He simply ordered one of his men to set a wooden box in front of my father.

"Don Moretti," Luca said, "if you're going to change the rules at the New York docks, the least you can do is drink with your old friends first."

Inside was a bottle of aged wine from Sicily. My father didn't touch it. Luca uncorked it himself, and a waiter poured wine into nine glasses. The representatives exchanged glances before anyone reached for one.

The cork rolled to a stop by my foot.

I bent to pick it up. My fingers were still an inch away when I caught a faint, bitter smell. It wasn't the usual bitterness of wine.

At the neutral-ground clinic in Malta, I'd smelled the same thing once before, just before a man's heart rate suddenly went out of control. Dr. Rosa Galea had pulled me back and told me that if I ever smelled it again, I should check the rim of the glass first.

A film of oil clung to the side of my father's glass, so thin it was almost invisible.

Luca raised his glass, and his gaze finally settled on me. He didn't look surprised. It was as if he'd known all along that I'd be sitting there.

"Tonight," he said, "we need to decide once again who deserves to control the New York docks."

My father lifted the glass to his lips.

Six months later, my father still met with the investigators regularly. Whenever the phone rang at home, he'd glance out the window first, as if cars might still be outside waiting for his orders. My mother would remind him to finish his breakfast. He no longer had to choose a call from the port over a plate of cold eggs. Instead, he often didn't know what to do with a quiet day.Moretti Logistics continued operating under independent oversight. Some of the casino holdings were sold to compensate and support affected employees.Lorenzo ran the legitimate shipping business. Every new contract he signed had to be reviewed by an outside auditor, and it took him time to get used to that.Matteo was still working through the cooperation agreement and sometimes got home too late for dinner.Dante took a job in security at the medical center. The first rule he put in place was that no one was allowed to argue loudly outside the exam rooms.Nico finished his ER rotation and sometimes came home

The next day, the church in Little Italy opened its doors. The eight families sat in their usual pews out of habit, but this time there were no gunmen outside clearing the street for them. Luca was in federal custody. Only his lawyer came, bringing a statement that claimed all the evidence had been fabricated by the Moretti family to cover up its old crimes.Rosa had briefly regained consciousness in the hospital. Nico told me she still needed to be monitored and would not be able to testify anytime soon. When I told Gianna, she took my hand and said we should focus on presenting the facts we could prove today. The church windows were set high, and the sunlight did not reach the front row. My father sat there, with the Don's seat beside him empty.Enzo did not order the statement torn up. Instead, he asked the Bellini family's doctor to speak first. The doctor had brought a preserved sample from the deceased Bellini heir, along with the independent retest records. He stuck to what the

The latch on the case clicked open softly. Luca pulled out the top page. All he saw were case numbers, test dates, and a string of index codes that couldn't be traced back to names. He flipped through several more pages, and his expression slowly turned cold."Where are the full records?""Not here."He let out a laugh, but his eyes stayed cold. He threw the papers on the floor and moved the needle from Rosa's neck to her arm. I stepped forward, but I was still a split second too slow. Rosa flinched in pain, and the chair slammed against the edge of the platform."Now you can chase me," Luca said, "or save her."He ran for the exit on the other side. I rushed over and caught Rosa. Her breaths grew shorter and shorter. The pulse at her wrist raced, then slowed. I cut her free, lowered her until she lay flat, and took the last shot out of its temperature-controlled case.Rosa recognized the label and tugged at my sleeve, as if she was afraid I'd waste my only chance on her. I said, "Forg

The families' meeting scheduled for the next day was moved up to that night. Someone suggested sending gunmen to sweep the port. Someone else wanted to use Luca's relatives to draw him out. Every plan promised speed. None addressed the real problem: Luca had Rosa, and the original medical records were scattered across systems in New York and Malta. Tearing the port apart would not save her.Enzo called in from Sicily. First, he asked to see the retest results for his own sample. Then he listened in silence while the other bosses argued. He was the same man who had allowed Luca, the Vitale heir, to surround my family with his men. When someone asked him to order his grandson to release Rosa, he said Luca was no longer taking his calls. Enzo planned to fly to New York that very night. His voice was tense. I couldn't tell whether he was more worried about Rosa or about losing control of Luca for good."I'll go," Lorenzo said. "Give me the case.""He knows how I work," I answered. "The fil

Three days later, Rosa arrived in New York. She didn't stay at the Moretti house. She went straight to a partner clinic in Brooklyn to sort through the files she'd brought from Malta. When I saw her face on the screen, I realized how long it had been since I'd heard her say my name in a room where I felt safe. The day I left Malta, Rosa walked me to the harbor. She didn't ask whether I'd keep practicing medicine once I found my family. She only said that if anyone there was willing to learn my signs, I should let them try. I didn't have to tell them my whole past right away just to repay anyone. After that, I'd used signs to talk to my family about the weather, dinner, and the locks on the doors. When I finally wanted to tell Rosa about it, she smiled at me through the screen before I could say a word."How's your father?" she asked."Still in the ICU. He's complaining that his oatmeal is too bland."Rosa nodded and pulled up the original receiving list for the donated supplies. Three

On the afternoon of the third day, the hotel was still taped off. The lead investigator agreed to let us go down to the basement with him and Dante for one simple reason. Dante had set up the offline recording system, and he was the only one who knew where the spare key to the security office was hidden. Gianna and I put on medical center staff jackets and went in through a side door. When the elevator stopped on the second basement level, the clang of metal echoed down the hallway. Two men in maintenance uniforms were dismantling the main server. They held up their IDs, and before the investigator had even looked at them, Gianna was already walking toward them. "You came in with Luca the night of the gala. Were you also the ones who deleted my messages?"She deliberately raised her voice to draw their attention. The two men exchanged a look. One moved toward her while the other reached behind the server. Dante stopped the second man and told him to step away from the equipment. While
