SEREIA

My work days always felt repetitive and today was not going to be different, I laid in bed staring at the ceiling as I contemplated if this was all worth it.

The stress from work, the insults and most of all the pay that wasn’t even enough. I had woken up before my alarm, which was nothing new as it had been happening a lot lately, and for the past ten minutes I’ve been staring at my ceiling, thinking.

My train of thought was interrupted by my alarm finally ringing and I took that as the cue to get up. I stood up from my bed, walking into the bathroom to freshen up and after I was done I walked to Liyana’s room.

Knocking on the door I entered with a small smile. “Good morning love bug.” I said but Liyana just groaned as she rolled around on the bed.

“Time for school dear.” I said tapping on her shoulder lightly to wake her up.

She groaned. “Mamaaa I don’t want to go to school.”

I smiled and shook my head. “Well I don’t want to go to work either baby.”

That got her moving. Slowly, but moving.

While she brushed her teeth, I pulled out her uniform and laid it on the bed. Then I returned to my room to change into my work clothes.

I wore a black skirt and a white shirt and I pulled my hair into a ponytail and applied some lip gloss.

“All done.” I whispered, staring at myself in satisfaction.

After I was all done I returned to Liyana’s room and i got her dressed after that we made our way to the dining for breakfast.

Gracia was already at the dining when we arrived she was having some toast and we joined her the dining table quiet as we ate.

I poured some tea and continued forcing myself to eat. My stomach wasn’t hungry, but I knew better than to skip meals now.

I watched Liyana and Gracia as they ate. The way Liyana leaned into her while Gracia pretended not to like it but still rested a hand on her head.

“Okay,” I said breaking the heart warming moment. “Let’s go.” I took a hold of Liyana’s hands as I led her out of the house.

“Goodbye gracia”

Goodbye granny!!”

The walk to school was short. Liyana skipped beside me, talking about puzzles and a girl who stole her crayons.

“Mama,” she said suddenly. “When is the tall man coming again?”

I froze for half a second. “Huh?”

“When is he coming mama— we need to solve puzzles.” Liyana answered and I just nodded staring at her.

“I don’t know baby but pretty soon.” I said to her curious face. “I mean he has to visit granny.” I added and she nodded accepting it and running ahead of me.

I dropped Liyana at school and then hailed a cab and left for work.

The Sterling Hotel towered over me, the hotel shimmered in gold and glass and it was easily the most expensive building on the block.

Expensive cars were lined at the entrance and the door men moved like they had been trained for this all their life, it was that perfect.

The hotel was filled with kind of people who didn’t check prices before buying stuff, and I couldn’t be more unfortunate working closely with them.

I took a deep breath and walking into the place I hated most. The front desk. It was already busy with guest standing at the counter.

“Morning,” my coworker Nina said as soon as I reached my desk. “You’re early.”

“Couldn’t sleep,” I replied. And she smiled at me. “Join the club.”

The day moved fast with guests checking in and out, some complaining about their rooms, while some complained about the heaters mostly things that weren’t even our fault.

“My room is too cold.”

“The towels are too rough.”

“Why is the elevator slow?”

I smiled. I apologized. I typed. I fixed what I could and by noon, my feet hurt and my head throbbed in pain.

I massaged my head trying to ease the pain when a purse was slammed onto the counter. “The service here is ridiculous.” A high pitched voice spoke and I straightened resisting the urge to sigh before I spoke. “How can I help you, ma’am?”

“My room is unacceptable.” She spoke sneering at me, her face twisted in disgust.

“I’m sorry to hear that. What seems to be the problem?”

“Everything,” she snapped. “The view is ugly. The sheets smell. And don’t get me started on the staff.”

I nodded. “Let me check—”

“Are you even listening?” she cut in. “Or are you too slow?”

My cheeks burned. “I’m listening.”

She laughed. “Of course you are.”

People nearby started watching.

“I want to speak to someone competent,” she said loudly.

“I can call my supervisor,” I replied calmly, though my hands shook.

“Yes. Do that. And maybe learn how to do your job.”

I picked up the phone.

Before I could speak, a voice cut through the noise.

“What’s going on here?”

I looked up.

And my heart dropped.

SEREIAI stood outside the glass doors of The Golden Lily staring at my own reflection. My fake leather coat was peeling off and my shoes looked chopped from years of wear. I knew I didn’t look like I belonged here in the rich side of New York. This part wasn’t for people like me but it was either this or two thousand a month at the hotel, and that isn’t even enough for me plus I had a child to take care of.I swallowed my fear and took a deep breath as I pushed the door to the boutique open. The door bell chimed softly signifying someone was here.Inside the boutique everything was white and gold, wedding dresses hung on the walls looking like expensive clouds and I couldn’t help but admire their beautiful state. My eyes met the eye of a woman with a sharp bun and even sharper eyes she watched me from across the counter with a look that told me I didn’t belong here.“What do you want?” She asked in a clipped tone as she pulled her glasses up her nose.“Good afternoon— I’m here—f-for.

He walked towards the place where I and the woman stood, his steps heavy and intentional. His appearance seeemed to make the woman’s posture shift. She stood more upright and pushed her chest out, as her cheeks turned red while she stared at him.The air definitely changed, and pressure settled low in my chest because of all the eyes on me, especially his.I looked up and Valerian stood a few steps away from me looking as imposing as ever and the bodyguard behind him didn’t seem to make things better. His expression didn't change when his eyes met mine. But something in his gaze sharpened."This girl," the woman started, pointing at me, "has been inc

SEREIAIt’s like my body had forgotten how to work, because I stood still my hands on the door handle, staring at the man in front of me.My chest felt like it was being squeezed and I suddenly forgot how to breathe. The man at the door didn’t move either he just started at me his face stoic and void of any emotions and I couldn’t tell if he was as shocked at me.It’s been five years.Five years since we met.Five years since we hooked up.And of course five years since he ghosted me.He looked taller now his hair slightly shorter. His face was much more sharper and older. He wore a black coat that fit him too well and made him look like a villian. He looked expensive, powerful and of course rigid. But his eyes— they were thesame light, cold, focused and they watched me like a predator watching its prey. His gaze ran over my body causing me to fiddle with my dress as I felt a little bit self conscious. After having Liyana my hips had widened and my breasts had grown a bit. I wasn’t ov

SEREIAThe first thing I noticed when I walked into the kitchen this morning was the noise. It wasn't just the soft clatter of pots and pans. This was one was loud and busy, I could hear the oil sizzling, lids clanging infact I would have sworn I could heard the oven humming. That's how busy the kitchen was and it wasn’t a normal occurrence since the old woman Gracie always made it her life’s mission to leave early for the bakery. So seeing her standing over the stove, her sleeves rolled up and her face contorted in a serious expression. All but told me that this was serious business.."Why are you cooking so early in the morning?" I asked my face twisted in a frown as I walked towards the kitchen counter to grab a blueberry muffin."Well good morning to you too." Gracie replied sardonically, ignoring my question."Good morning Gracie." I spoke with a smile. "But seriously what is the feast for?" I asked and she scoffed as she turned the meal in the boiling pot."When did it become a

SEREIA“No… no… no…”The word slipped out from my lips as I started at the pregnancy strip on the counter, two red lines, positive.I was pregnant with a baby. This can’t be real. This is impossible.I only had sex with Lucas few days before our anniversary, he came home drunk and horny and like the dutiful wife I was I spread my legs open. Now look at me. I am pregnant while I’m homeless and can barely feed. This was too much my knees buckled as I grabbed the sink for support, taking in deep uneven breaths. The rapt knock sounded on the door and I straightened up composing my self so as to look put together.“Child..are you done yet?” The old woman voice called out her voice sharp with a tinge of concern.I swallowed had,my face burning from the shame I felt . “Yes I am done.” I yelled back.My statement was followed by another knock. “What does the test say?” She asked and I gulped my fingers shaking as I unloved the door. She stood in front of the door arms crossed and immediately I
