Chapter 3

Author: Mira
I arrived at the bar and changed into the skimpy waitress uniform.

The owner was a decent man. When he heard I was saving up for tuition to study abroad, he paid me a dollar more per hour than the other waitresses.

For the past six months, I had been on my feet five hours a day, enduring insults and violence from drunk customers. I had taken it all without complaint.

Because I knew that every second I endured here was a stepping stone toward Zurich.

I stood for three hours in heels that didn't fit and earned a hundred dollars in tips.

Before I could celebrate, the owner grabbed my arm. "Heather, four guests just arrived in VIP Room One. Go take care of them!"

He winked at me, excited. "Take good care of them. Their tips alone might pay for your flight to Zurich."

I thanked him and made my way to the VIP room with bottles on my tray, ignoring the ache in my feet.

The room was dimly lit, the guests hidden in shadow. I couldn't make out their faces, so I leaned in as usual and asked if they would like to order drinks.

Silence. No one answered.

I looked up and found myself staring into Julian's furious face. "Heather, you're actually working a job like this!"

Julian slapped the tray out of my hands, his eyes raking over my revealing uniform.

Bottles shattered, and the shards cut into my ankle.

I bit back the pain and said nothing.

Dominic stood as well, glaring at me. "Have you forgotten everything we taught you growing up?"

I lowered my head. "I need the money."

Julian scoffed.

Leah stepped forward and linked her arm through mine. "Heather, if you needed money, why didn't you ask Dominic or Julian?"

She tilted her head, putting on an innocent expression. "I thought you had an allowance account. I don't even have one."

The deposits to my allowance account had stopped a long time ago.

Every cent I lived on now came from this uniform, from the drinks on my tray, scraped together one tip at a time.

But saying any of that would only become more proof, in my brothers' eyes, that I had fallen as low as they believed.

So I didn't explain. I just looked at Leah's barely concealed smirk and spoke calmly.

"You're right. You don't have an allowance account because you don't need one. You can draw directly from the Weems Family trust, and you have access to far more than I ever did. So lose the condescending act, Leah."

Leah's eyes went red. She buried her face in her hands and began to cry softly.

"Who gave you the right to talk to Leah like that!" Darian shoved me, and I lost my footing, dropping to my knees on the broken glass.

Neither of my brothers noticed. They were too busy rushing to comfort Leah.

"I was only trying to look out for Heather, and she..." Leah's theatrical sobbing made my stomach turn.

"I want to go home!"

"Fine, let's go home. Don't waste your time on someone like Heather!" With that, my brothers swept Leah out the door without a backward glance.

Darian didn't leave right away. He stood over me, pulled a thick wad of cash from his wallet, and flung it in my face.

"You need money, right? Take it, and don't let me catch you in this neighborhood again!"

I crouched down slowly, pulling the hem of my skirt over the bloodied cuts on my knees, and picked up the bills one by one.

"Thank you for the tip, sir." I kept my voice polite.

He clenched his fists, looking as if he wanted to tear me apart.

Bang!

Darian slammed the door behind him, leaving me alone in the room.

After that, word spread across the city that the Weems Family was searching for their missing daughter. They offered a reward no one could ignore: half a million dollars for anyone who could provide useful information about Heather. But no one had any leads. In a dark, abandoned warehouse, Dominic and Julian sat on a raised platform, watching coldly as their men tortured the thugs who had beaten me.Darian burst in and shouted at Dominic. "You sent Leah back to those relatives? She's your sister!""She's not," Dominic said."She doesn't deserve to be," Julian added.Darian's jaw tightened, barely containing his fury. His eyes shifted to the thugs being tortured below."What are you doing? Those are just thugs from that neighborhood. Why punish them?"One of the thugs could no longer bear Dominic's barbed whip. Bleeding all over, he crawled forward on his knees, begging. "Don Weems, we were wrong! We never should've followed Leah's orders to hurt Heather."Darian thought he had misheard

Dominic holstered his gun and turned to Leah. He was looking at her the way a predator looks at prey.Leah's legs gave out. She collapsed to her knees."So that's why... you borrowed my family crest the other day. You lied to me. You said it was for a school play!" Dominic's face was utterly blank. He advanced on Leah step by step until her back was flat against the wall. "Why did you do this to Heather!"Leah had never seen him look so terrifying. She shook her head desperately and grabbed at Julian's sleeve. "Help me, please. I didn't mean to... I was just scared Heather would come back and take you away from me. I was scared..."Her shoulders shook with sobs.It had worked every time before. But this time, Julian didn't wipe her tears. He shoved her away. "You've disappointed me.""Find Heather. She might not have gotten far."Julian nodded and left with a few bodyguards.Dominic walked slowly over to Leah. "Leah, from today on, you are no longer my sister."Leah shook her head in d

Dominic had his aide contact the gala's organizers to inform them the Weems Family would not be attending.Leah tugged at Dominic's sleeve, shaking it pleadingly. "But Darian is waiting for us there."Dominic looked at her, his gaze so cold she might as well have been a stranger.Leah bit her lip, hurt, and slowly lowered her head.Julian rushed to Leah's defense. "Even if you're worried about Heather, you shouldn't take it out on Leah."Dominic loosened his tie impatiently. "Do you remember when Leah wanted that necklace as a kid, and you slapped Heather's hands raw because she wouldn't give it up?"Julian's face changed instantly."Even then, even when you hit her, she held on to that necklace and refused to let go. But now she's pawned it without a second thought. Do you really still think she's just angry?"Before Julian could answer, Dominic pulled open the car door. "Let's check the apartment."The atmosphere inside the car turned to ice.The streets blurred past the windows. The

Dominic made a seventh call. It went straight to voicemail again. He muttered, half to himself, "It's been two weeks. Why won't she answer?"He opened his unread messages. They were all texts from Heather. The screen was filled with the same two messages, over and over: "I'm sorry." "Please come get me."The last message was from four months ago.Something twisted in his chest. "Were we too hard on her?"Julian stirred his coffee, but his eyes kept drifting to the dark screen of his phone."A daughter of the Weems Family is allowed to have some edge, but Heather's too bold, too competitive. If we don't smooth out those rough edges, the old enemies we've made will target her sooner or later.
