Chapter 2

Author: Mira
Something seemed to explode inside my head. I curled my lips into a bitter smile, mocking myself for ever getting my hopes up.

I had thought my brothers called me back because they remembered today was my birthday.

Even though I had already decided to leave, I had still held on to the desperate hope that they might explain themselves and that I could have one last happy birthday.

Instead, they just wanted to give Leah a complete family. They wanted to get rid of me, the burden, once and for all.

Six months of working odd jobs had left my hands covered in tiny cuts and scrapes.

My hands shook as I picked up the pen. The cuts on my fingers made my writing jagged and unsteady. A single tear fell onto my signature, smudging a small blot of ink.

I finished signing and looked up at Dominic through tear-filled eyes.

He turned away, avoiding my gaze. His voice was low and heavy. "Now that you've signed, you should go. Leah doesn't like you, and today is her birthday. Don't ruin it for her."

I closed my eyes and nodded.

The tiny spark of hope that had flickered to life moments ago died in an instant.

My heart went dead.

The butler escorted me out as if I were a guest, not family.

I stood outside the mansion gates for a long time. The sunlight stung my eyes and seared something deep in my chest.

Laughter drifted out from the mansion again. I wiped my face with the back of my hand and walked away.

It was my last day at my part-time job. I took the subway to the bar where I worked.

On the train, everyone around me seemed to be in pairs. I was the only one alone.

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat and scrolled through Instagram to distract myself.

The very first post was Leah's.

She was wearing a custom-made princess gown, with Dominic, Julian, and Darian gathered around her.

Her caption read: The unwanted one is finally gone. Now this family is complete.

Dominic and Darian had both liked the post.

In the comments, Julian had written, "Congratulations on your acceptance to Durand Academy of the Arts!"

My hand trembled.

Durand Academy was a private art school with tuition of at least a hundred thousand dollars a year.

It had once been my dream school, but Dominic and Julian had refused to let me apply because of the cost.

Dominic was a mafia don; Julian dealt arms internationally.

A hundred thousand dollars was pocket change to them, barely a minute's earnings. And the program I had wanted was the cheapest one Durand offered.

Back then, I told myself they just couldn't bear to see me go so far away.

Only now did I understand. It was never about the money. They just didn't think I was worth spending it on.

An adopted sister with no blood ties could never compare to their late mentor's daughter.

With that thought, I blocked every one of their numbers.

I didn't want a home that didn't love me. I didn't want a family that didn't love me.

After that, word spread across the city that the Weems Family was searching for their missing daughter. They offered a reward no one could ignore: half a million dollars for anyone who could provide useful information about Heather. But no one had any leads. In a dark, abandoned warehouse, Dominic and Julian sat on a raised platform, watching coldly as their men tortured the thugs who had beaten me.Darian burst in and shouted at Dominic. "You sent Leah back to those relatives? She's your sister!""She's not," Dominic said."She doesn't deserve to be," Julian added.Darian's jaw tightened, barely containing his fury. His eyes shifted to the thugs being tortured below."What are you doing? Those are just thugs from that neighborhood. Why punish them?"One of the thugs could no longer bear Dominic's barbed whip. Bleeding all over, he crawled forward on his knees, begging. "Don Weems, we were wrong! We never should've followed Leah's orders to hurt Heather."Darian thought he had misheard

Dominic holstered his gun and turned to Leah. He was looking at her the way a predator looks at prey.Leah's legs gave out. She collapsed to her knees."So that's why... you borrowed my family crest the other day. You lied to me. You said it was for a school play!" Dominic's face was utterly blank. He advanced on Leah step by step until her back was flat against the wall. "Why did you do this to Heather!"Leah had never seen him look so terrifying. She shook her head desperately and grabbed at Julian's sleeve. "Help me, please. I didn't mean to... I was just scared Heather would come back and take you away from me. I was scared..."Her shoulders shook with sobs.It had worked every time before. But this time, Julian didn't wipe her tears. He shoved her away. "You've disappointed me.""Find Heather. She might not have gotten far."Julian nodded and left with a few bodyguards.Dominic walked slowly over to Leah. "Leah, from today on, you are no longer my sister."Leah shook her head in d

Dominic had his aide contact the gala's organizers to inform them the Weems Family would not be attending.Leah tugged at Dominic's sleeve, shaking it pleadingly. "But Darian is waiting for us there."Dominic looked at her, his gaze so cold she might as well have been a stranger.Leah bit her lip, hurt, and slowly lowered her head.Julian rushed to Leah's defense. "Even if you're worried about Heather, you shouldn't take it out on Leah."Dominic loosened his tie impatiently. "Do you remember when Leah wanted that necklace as a kid, and you slapped Heather's hands raw because she wouldn't give it up?"Julian's face changed instantly."Even then, even when you hit her, she held on to that necklace and refused to let go. But now she's pawned it without a second thought. Do you really still think she's just angry?"Before Julian could answer, Dominic pulled open the car door. "Let's check the apartment."The atmosphere inside the car turned to ice.The streets blurred past the windows. The

Dominic made a seventh call. It went straight to voicemail again. He muttered, half to himself, "It's been two weeks. Why won't she answer?"He opened his unread messages. They were all texts from Heather. The screen was filled with the same two messages, over and over: "I'm sorry." "Please come get me."The last message was from four months ago.Something twisted in his chest. "Were we too hard on her?"Julian stirred his coffee, but his eyes kept drifting to the dark screen of his phone."A daughter of the Weems Family is allowed to have some edge, but Heather's too bold, too competitive. If we don't smooth out those rough edges, the old enemies we've made will target her sooner or later. Making her learn her lesson was for her own protection.""But we raised her," Dominic said quietly. "We watched her grow up.""That's exactly why I trust her to handle it," Julian said firmly. "All we did was put her in a rough neighborhood. We never denied her food or anything she needed. On Leah's
