Chapter 1

Jessica Shaw wrapped her arms around Dad's arm and acted all sweet. "Dad, please let me stay with you! I love you so much, and I'm not afraid of struggling at all."

Since Jessica grew up spoiled and reckless, Dad was deeply moved by her words. He did not notice Mom standing beside him with a dark, stormy expression.

Mom stepped forward and said, "No. Jessica will suffer if she goes with you, so I have to take her."

She was concerned that Jessica would suffer if she went with Dad, but she never considered my well-being. The two of them fought fiercely over Jessica's custody, acting as if I were invisible.

No one cared whether I existed.

In the end, Jessica insisted on staying with Dad, and no amount of persuasion could change her mind.

Mom reluctantly took me since she had no other choice. I followed her and got into my soon-to-be stepfather Richard Wagner's luxury car.

Jessica skipped away hand in hand with Dad. She even shot me a smug, provoking look before leaving. However, I was completely unbothered.

After all, Mom was extremely wealthy, while Dad's life was a complete mess.

In my previous life, Dad was constantly on the run from creditors and dragged me along with him. As a result, I never had a chance to focus on school. The bankruptcy and the divorce crushed him, and he completely gave up on himself, drinking all day in a cheap rental and neglecting everything else.

I used to be a top student, but I could not afford tuition and had to take care of him. Eventually, I dropped out early just to make a living.

Even though we shared the same parents, Jessica was always the lucky one. She was pretty and knew how to charm our parents–and they adored her.

Since she was my younger sister, they always said I should act like the older sister and let her have her way in everything. Even during the divorce, both parents only wanted her.

In this life, however, she ultimately chose Dad. He finally had a moment to hold his head high in front of Mom.

As soon as we got in the car, Mom started criticizing me. "You've been ugly since you were little, and you're not likable at all. Now that we're going to live with Richard, don't you dare embarrass me."

I thought it was ridiculous, wondering what kind of mother would talk about her own daughter like that in front of someone else.

Nonetheless, I did not react.

Before long, the car had pulled into an upscale neighborhood filled with mansions. I had known from my past life that Richard was wealthy, but I had not realized he was this wealthy.

Later, Richard enrolled me in the city's best private school, and a driver would pick me up every day. To make up for dropping out in my past life, I studied incredibly hard.

My efforts paid off, and I consistently ranked in the top three at school year after year. Mom, who had barely paid attention to me before, suddenly loved attending my parent-teacher conferences.

She enjoyed being admired by other parents and praised by the teachers as an excellent mother. Since Richard did not have children of his own, life in that house was incredibly comfortable for me.

Gradually, I started having my own goals and wanted to study abroad.

Before Richard could even say a word, Mom jumped in and snapped, "You're just a kid, so what's this nonsense about going overseas? Don't think a few good grades mean you can do whatever you want."

Later on, I realized that when someone truly disliked a person, they did not need a reason. Even a biological mother could be that way to their own child.

Jessica stared at me with pure resentment, unwilling to accept reality.I had spent a lot of money hiring a private investigator, and we finally tracked down Brett. Then, I bribed him to go back to Jessica and convince her to buy a gun. That way, I turned a passive situation into an active one. She was not allowed to use a real knife, so she had to use a replica gun to try to kill me.With that setup, the police outside had no choice but to fire to protect my life. I did not even need to do anything myself, and a major problem solved itself. This time, I was not injured at all, and after giving a brief statement at the police station, they let me go home.Richard and Ryan were already waiting for me when I arrived."Where's Jessica? Why isn't she back?"The moment Mom saw me, she rushed over, demanding to know where Jessica was.I asked, "How did you know Jessica was with me? You were the one who put sleeping pills in the milk last night, right?"Of course, Mom denied everythin

I shouted, "Jessica, I'm still your sister!"Jessica growled, "What kind of bullcrap sister? I've always been prettier and luckier than you. Why do you get all the good things in the end, while I turned into a mess?"Don't worry. As long as you cooperate, I'll make your death quick."She wanted to kill me again and restart everything, but Brett was too scared. After all, this was a prison sentence waiting to happen. He tried to grab the knife from her hand and said, "We agreed we'd just get the money and leave! I'm not doing murder. Count me out!"Right then, police sirens blared outside."You're surrounded! Release the hostage now!"I had known all along that someone as jealous as Jessica would never give up. So Ryan and I planned ahead, and the moment I got taken, he called the cops.Yesterday, Mom's sudden concern had made me suspicious, so I texted Ryan before drinking that milk. The police had surrounded the warehouse."Give it up, Jessica! You'll really go to prison for

When I started college, I continued helping at Richard's company. He taught me everything without holding anything back. Since I was used to calling him 'Uncle Richard', he never minded and told me I did not need to change it.This time, Ryan and I followed him to a private mountain resort for a meeting. We sat across from Christopher Barker, a major figure who influenced the entire industry. We had a pleasant conversation throughout the entire afternoon. In my past life, connecting with Christopher was what helped Dad and me turn things around completely. Back then, the company slowly improved but still felt empty inside. Because of that, I desperately worked every channel I could to help the company gain a foothold, which was how I met Christopher. He really appreciated my abilities and felt confident leaving things in my hands. In this life, while Dad and Jessica were still celebrating tiny wins, I had already reached out to Christopher early on.In such a huge market, whoever

Richard finally returned from overseas, and he had even successfully closed the deals there. During this time, Ryan and I had also stabilized things back home.Despite that, the difficulties were not over yet. The company was in a transitional period, and if we could not push through, all our efforts would be wasted. That evening, Richard came to talk to me. "Natalie, I'm back now, and Ryan is here to handle company matters too. I want you to focus on your education right now. If you still want to study abroad, I can arrange that for you."I was grateful that Richard still remembered my dream of studying overseas. However, I did not want to go anymore.I said, "Uncle Richard, the company's struggling right now, and there isn't money to send me abroad anyway. I'd rather attend college here, then help you after I graduate."Richard did not push me and kept emphasizing that since he did not have kids of his own, I was his child from then on....I threw myself into preparing for th

"Natalie, don't blame your mother. That's just how she is, and I'll have the doctor check on you later, too," said Richard, trying to comfort me.Inside the room, Mom kept cursing me with the harshest words. "I don't even know who she takes after with that awful attitude. Jessica is still the sweetest and most sensible."When Mom and Richard finally went to rest, Jessica suddenly woke up as if nothing had happened. She was probably still pissed about what had happened, because she came into my room that night just to warn me.She hissed, "You think this means you won? Don't be stupid. Mom and Dad always loved me more. This isn't even your worst moment yet. I'm waiting for the day everything falls apart for you."In my past life, I had always had it harder than her, so she never bothered picking fights with me. It was only after I started living well that she turned green with envy and dragged us both to our deaths. In this life, she believed she would ultimately be the winner, but

Jessica slapped me hard across the face. "You wretch! I totally underestimated you! Richard treats you like a treasure. Even after Mom got kicked out, you're still living in that house."I'd love to know what tricks you're using. Was it that plain, boring face of yours?"She and Mom both loved using their looks to get what they wanted, so they assumed everyone else did the same.As she spoke, she pulled out a small knife and waved it back and forth near my face.Seeing her pull out an actual blade, the thugs around us got uncomfortable and moved to stop her.One said, "Brett, we agreed we'd just rough her up and let her go! Now you've even taken her blindfold off, and you're bringing out a knife?"Brett Hudson was Jessica's delinquent boyfriend. Those thugs followed him for the street cred, but none of them wanted to mess with real weapons.Brett stepped forward to intervene. "Jessica, enough. Scaring her is one thing, but she's still your sister.""Please, as if she deserves t
