Chapter 1

With a grunt, Jacob ended the session.

He stared at the photo and remained in a daze for a long time before he grabbed a napkin to clean himself.

When he looked down, I covered my mouth and quietly retreated back into the bedroom.

After I shut the door, I noticed that my hand was wet.

At some point, I had started crying.

I grabbed some napkins to dab at my tears, but they only made me cry even harder.

Against my will, memories of the past rose to the forefront of my mind.

Jacob was a true workaholic. He was incredibly restrained when it came to physical intimacy, to the point of being indifferent toward it.

During the three years we were together, whenever we had a moment of passion, he would just go through the motions, as if he were just completing a task.

During our anniversary last year, I listened to my best friend’s suggestion and wore a seductive, lace sleeping gown that I had meticulously prepared. I looked forward to being able to stir up his desire.

But there was no hint of desire in his eyes. He even asked me in puzzlement, “Is this really that important to you?”

The shame and embarrassment I had felt back then remained as a thorn in my heart.

I never knew that such a person would go wild over a single photo.

When I lay back in bed, I found myself unable to sleep.

The spot next to me remained empty, and the cold spread from my fingertips to my heart.

Over the course of the night, I would get up a few times, refusing to give up, and tiptoed in the corridor.

Every time, I would find that he was still in the study. When he held the book, he would occasionally chuckle. Other times, he would sink into deep thought.

I had never seen him look that relaxed and gentle before.

To others, Jacob had always been a decisive workaholic. When he was with me, he was also strict and restrained.

But that night, his defenses had crumbled down because of a book about his first love.

When I returned to the bedroom, I turned on my phone and spent a lot of effort before I found that novel again.

As I read it, I found that it was just a list-like record of a high school romance. The writing was shallow and amateurish.

That mediocre writing had been able to keep Jacob up all night.

I was sure that it was not the story itself that kept him so enchanted. It was the other protagonist in the story.

Before dawn, I turned off the glaring phone screen.

My last bit of hope died away, and I finally accepted the truth that I should have realized a long time ago.

Jacob did not love me.

If that were the case, there was no need for this wedding to be carried out any longer.

I got up and left the bedroom to find Jacob already sitting on the sofa in the living room.

Perhaps because he had been reliving old memories all night, but there was no sign of fatigue on his face, despite the all-nighter. Instead, there was a faint hint of bliss.

When he saw me, he said, “You don’t have to make breakfast for me today. I suddenly feel like having the waffles from the restaurant next to the company.”

My heart felt like it had been stabbed.

What he just said overlapped with a certain page in the book.

[Jacob commuted to school. Before class started every day, he would sneakily put warm waffles and milk on my table.]

He was so eagerly reliving and searching for the memories of the taste of food related to his first love.

What made me even sadder was that he had gastritis due to irregular eating caused by how busy he was with work. He could not eat anything greasy or spicy.

Hence, over the course of three years, I had prepared breakfast for him according to the suggestions from our nutritionist.

During my birthday, I had smiled as I made my wish. “I hope that my boyfriend will be able to eat my breakfast forever and never be hospitalized because of gastritis again.”

He had been moved back then, which was rare for him, and he gave me a peck as he made me a promise.

“Alright. I’ll have the breakfast you make forever.”

That was the only time we made a promise that spanned to eternity, but he had broken it easily because of Rain.

When I stopped reminiscing, I found that I was not trying to make him change his mind from worry, unlike before.

I just looked down to hide all of my emotions, and I nodded. “Alright.”

Perhaps Jacob never thought that I would react this way.

He was taken aback and wanted to ask me something when the doorbell rang and interrupted him.

I went to the door. When I saw who it was from the peephole, I was stunned.

I rented a small house with a vineyard in Tuscia. During the day, I learned how to brew wine from the farmers. In the evening, I sat on my balcony to watch the sunset. My days went by calmly. Sometimes, I would hear about Jacob and Rain from my friends back in the country. After Rain was fired, she lost her source of income, so she decided to pester Jacob and went to River Corporation every day. She lifted a sign that said: Jacob River betrayed me!She would tell any interested parties about her “tragic life”.In the beginning, Jacob’s assistant would send Rain away. Later on, he resorted to calling the police. But Rain seemed to have made up her mind. A few days after the police took her away, Rain appeared at the company again and caused such a ruckus that everyone knew about it. River Corporation’s stock market value was already hanging on for dear life. Because of what Rain did, it plummeted even further. The board of directors became even more displeased and talke

I had uploaded a post that might look like I was clearing up a misunderstanding, but I only proved that Jacob really did cheat on me. [Thank you for your concern. Due to a clash of personalities, I have broken up peacefully with Mr. Jacob River. As for the hiccup during the wedding, I hope that you won’t read too much into it.][Everyone has the right to go after their true love. I respect Mr. Jacob River’s choice and wish them a happily ever after.]After uploading the post, I turned my phone off and slept well. When I turned on my phone the next day, I saw dozens of missed calls and a string of messages. Jacob’s rage was practically burning through the screen. [What on earth do you mean by this, Eve?!][That statement does anything but clear the misunderstanding!][Answer your phone! We need to talk!][Are you really only going to be happy after ruining my life?]It was only right for me to do what I was paid for, but I was the one who decided how I wanted to do things.

As I expected, the wedding farce quickly gained traction online. The hashtag #JacobTakesAMistress trended on Twitter for a full day, and it was even the number one trending hashtag. The people online did not hold back with their criticisms. [So much for being a wealthy family. Is Jacob River publicly acknowledging a mistress now? Are morals dead?][Rain Stone wanted to have her cake and eat it too? She already boasted that she’s Jacob River’s first love, and now, she even wants to be his mistress?][Eve Niles is so cool! That counterattack was amazing!]At the same time, I received a notification from a financial news outlet. River Corporation’s shares plummeted right after the market opened. Billions were gone from its market value. I turned my phone off and leaned against my chair to rest my eyes. As I expected, Jacob soon called. I answered it calmly, and I immediately heard an exhausted but familiar voice. “Eve, the public opinion online is already affecting the comp

The moment I finished talking, the guests went into a bizarre silence. In the next second, the screen showed the words: Mistress Acknowledgement Ceremony.Underneath was a smaller string of words: Congratulations on becoming a mistress, Rain Stone. The guests could no longer control themselves. Their jeers, discussions, and sounds of shutters clicking rose. Someone even started hollering, “Congratulations on getting a mistress, Mr. River!”Rain’s face turned pale. While trembling, she pointed at the screen. “Eve, h-how dare you humiliate me like this?!”I stayed smiling, though the amusement was not reflected in my eyes. “How could you call this humiliation? Weren’t you dreaming of this? Since you want to be with Jacob, becoming his mistress helps you achieve your dream, doesn’t it?”Jacob’s expression was so dark that there were no words to describe it. He gritted his teeth and said, “Eve, stop this farce right now!”I ignored him and gave a look at the wedding emcee. Sh

“Young Love Memoirs: Reunion?”A guest read the title on the title page, and her voice was filled with puzzlement. With the microphone in hand, I continued, “That’s right. This is the continuation of Rain Stone’s novel. I wrote it myself and recorded the things they did after their reunion. You can scan the QR code on the back cover to see a video as an easter egg.”In an instant, the wedding venue was filled with the sounds of suggestive panting. Under the grand Wedding March, those sounds seemed bizarre and ridiculous. Jacob’s face was red with rage. He grabbed my wrist. “What on earth are you doing, Eve?”Before I could say anything, Rain had already run in. She was wearing a pure white gown that was even more flamboyant than my wedding dress, and she stumbled toward us. “You can’t marry her, Jacob! We’re the ones who truly love each other!”Rain’s act of crashing the wedding to elope with Jacob and the suggestive video that was still being played made the guests burst i

  • The Sleepless Snow   Chapter 4

Irene simply thought that I was planning a surprise for Jacob and agreed to it. After hanging up, I went back to work. I was about to lose my fiancé, so I could not lose my job either. Perhaps out of guilt for his infidelity, Jacob came to pick me up from work. It was something he had never done before. The moment I sat in the front passenger seat, I remembered what had happened in the car earlier. I felt my stomach churn, and I started gagging. Jacob handed a napkin to me and asked in concern, “What’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?”I waved my hand to show that I was fine. Jacob drove into the underground parking lot of our apartment complex. After he parked the car, Jacob did not immediately get out. Instead, he suddenly dragged me to the backseat, lifted my dress, and tore off my underwear. He did not even do anything to get me ready and just claimed my body. I was not ready at all, and it only hurt. I tensed up from the pain. After a few moments, he stopped movin
