Chapter 4

Autor: Goldy Gold
Mom fell silent on the other end of the line. It was like she couldn't believe what she had just heard. Then came the shouting. "You really were just putting up a show. You can throw as much money at me as you want, but it'll never mean as much as a single word of concern from Henry!"

I'd already gone numb by then.

"Henry, transfer the money to my account by next Monday. Otherwise, don't blame me for what happens."

"You wouldn't dare! Go ahead and try getting the money back from him!"

Mom's voice was so shrill that it felt like it was drilling into my ears.

I hung up.

Evelyn pulled me into a hug and patted my back.

I used to think that if I just gave a little more, my parents would eventually see my worth, that maybe they'd give me even a fraction of the love they gave Henry.

But not anymore.

Monday afternoon came, and I still hadn't received the money.

I called Henry. He declined the call. But the food delivery app showed that his cafe was open.

So I called a group of street thugs who hung around the corner of the block.

A dozen men, with arms covered in loud tattoos, squeezed into tight shirts and flashy loafers, showed up. They ordered just one cup of coffee.

They started shouting over each other and playing games, causing a scene.

Customers took one look at them and bolted from the cafe.

"Get Henry out here! Pay up!" one of them yelled, slamming his hand on the table.

The cafe was a joint business, and his partner clearly didn't want trouble. He dragged Henry out of the back room without hesitation.

Henry's eyes were red. Shaking, he called me. "Ethan, this is absurd! It's just a little money. Do you really have to go this far?

"The cafe hasn't had a single customer all day. My partner's furious. Are you trying to ruin me? Call them off, will you?"

I laughed. "Pay me back, and they'll leave."

"Ethan, please. Just give me three more days, okay?" he sniffled. He was terrified.

I didn't give him an answer.

Right after that, Mom gave me dozens of calls. I declined every single one of them.

The guys told me Henry had been so scared that he ended up in a mess of snot and tears. He wrapped himself up tight and slipped out through the filthy alley behind the kitchen.

It reminded me of middle school.

Back then, I'd been bullied by a group of kids. I went home bruised and begged Mom for help, but she slapped me so hard that I hit the ground.

"Why do they only pick on you and not anyone else? It takes two to tango. You must've done something wrong," she snapped in annoyance.

But when Henry got scolded by his homeroom teacher for cheating, all he had to do was come home with red eyes and Mom immediately panicked. She even took him to see a therapist.

That same afternoon, she stormed into the school, argued with the teacher, and filed complaints everywhere she could. She didn't stop until the teacher was suspended, pending investigation.

Every time I thought about it, it felt like a slap to my face all over again.

Just then, Nancy called and told me to come home for cake. She had used her allowance to buy me a birthday cake.

Something in my chest softened. By the time I realized it, tears were already streaming down my face.

My daughter had somehow healed the wounds of my gloomy childhood.

Sure enough, Mom showed up at my office with a photo of me as a naked three-year-old the next day.

Every time someone walked in, she shoved the picture at them and cried out, "I feel so miserable. Your coworker Ethan is an ungrateful child! He won't even look at his own mother now that he's successful.

"Do you know him? He's been stealing since he was a kid. He used to take Henry's allowance! You should fire him!

"He pretends to be a devoted son, but he's cheap to the core. He even mooches off Henry for meals! Where's your boss? You can't keep someone like him around!"

The security guard looked like he was caught in the middle. The property manager texted me, and after getting my permission, he told her, "Mr. Luster moved to the capital."Mom's eyes widened. She looked like her soul had just left her body."That's impossible… Ethan would never leave me. He cares about his dad and me the most… How could he leave us?" she muttered.I was at a loss for a moment. So she did know. She knew how much I cared, how devoted I'd been, and how much I'd worried about them. She just didn't care. She even used it against me.…The day before I left for good, my cousin asked me to meet her at a cafe.I had just sat down when I saw Mom walking toward me.My cousin lowered her head apologetically. "I'm so sorry… My mom forced me to. She said if I didn't help your mother, she'd cut me off financially."After everything I'd been through, my heart had already hardened. I blocked her without another word.Mom's eyes were glistening with tears. Her hands were r

While I was wrapping up my handover at work, my cousin dropped a bombshell. My parents' house was being demolished. Compensation was being distributed at 200 thousand per person.Even if I was married, a share of that money was rightfully mine.So I went straight back to the Luster residence. Some things needed to be settled once and for all.The door hadn't even fully closed behind me when I walked into the house, and they froze. My parents and Henry had been excitedly discussing where to buy a new place and how to spend the compensation money.Henry was the first to react. His face immediately darkened. "What are you doing here?" he asked, eyeing me like I was some kind of threat."Oh, now you show up?" Mom snapped as she deliberately swept a pile of dust right onto my shoes. "When your dad and I were in the hospital, you didn't even bother showing your face. But the second there's money involved, here you are. And you still claim you're not petty."Dad pretended to watch T

Mom's eyes crinkled as she forced a smile and looked at me eagerly. "Ethan, you've been working hard. I made you some stew."I sat back in my chair and watched her without emotion."What do you want? Just spit it out."She opened the thermos. A familiar fishy stench filled the room.I couldn't help but remember this past New Year. Mom had made roast beef. Both Henry and I praised it.She kept piling slices onto Henry's plate. Even when he said he'd had enough, she didn't stop. After the meal, she kept going on about how I'd eaten eight pieces while Henry had only eaten ten. When I was leaving, I asked if I could take some home. She said there wasn't any left. But right after that, I saw her sneak a large container to Henry. When he refused, she stuffed it into the trunk. When she realized I'd seen her, she awkwardly rubbed her neck. "Do you really want some? It's a hassle to reheat. You have to pressure cook it. There's not much left, and your dad likes it too. But if you real

"Over the past ten years, I've spent 820 thousand on my parents and Henry. I've taken 48 days off work and missed my own daughter's school events because of it. If that still counts as being ungrateful, then tell me how I can show my gratitude to them," I said.Uncle Mark, who had been the loudest before, suddenly went quiet.I was the most successful out of all my relatives.Uncle Mark's son was still living at home, unemployed. Uncle Mark and his wife were working just to help pay off their son's gambling debts.Aunt Linda's daughter was a small-time livestreamer with barely any following. Aunt Rachel's daughter was an office worker making a modest salary. They probably hadn't even contributed 80 thousand to their own families in ten years, let alone 820 thousand.Aunt Linda spoke up. "Even if you spent 820 thousand and took time off work, that doesn't give you the right to take your mother's bracelet or her appliances. And what's this about medical care? You can't just stop yo

My coworkers were scared witless. Security had to get involved.I got the notice and took the elevator down. I was a manager now. Honestly, a scene like this wasn't enough to rattle me in the slightest."Are you done yet?" I asked, glaring coldly at Mom."Do you think you're the only one who can make a scene?" she sneered. "Mess with your brother, and I'll destroy you. I'd do anything for him."I pulled out my phone and made a call. "Yeah. Go to Henry's wife's workplace and ask for the money. Yeah, right now. She just got a government job and is still on probation."Mom's lips trembled. She grabbed my arm, panic flashing across her face. "Ethan, you ungrateful brat! You can't do this! You know Henry doesn't have any money!" she blurted."He has money for a car but not to pay me back?" I growled. "I work in the private sector. I'm not afraid of you making a scene. I can always find another job. But his wife? She finally got into public service after years of preparation. If she lo
