Chapter 2: The mysterious songstress

Sebastian's POV

We have been out on our fishing boat for hours now and we have caught quite a lot. Earlier today my soon-to-be Beta asked if I wanted to join him and a few others from the pack to go fishing and since I needed a break from Alpha training anyway I said yes.

"What do you say? Should we call it a day and head home?" My Beta Zander asks.

"Yeah, let's go home. It will be dark soon anyways." I answer.

As we head back I suddenly hear singing. At first I think I'm hearing things but then I'm certain. But I wonder who is singing here. We are still a bit away from the city and this place is pretty deserted. Still, I swear I can hear someone and it sounds like it's coming from the big rocks near my family's private beach.

"Hey, do you guys also hear singing?" I ask the others.

"Yeah, now that you mention it. But who could it be?" My soon-to-be Gamma Alec asks.

"I don't know, but it sounds beautiful." I state while trying to concentrate on the singing.

We all listen closely to the beautiful song. It's in a language I don't know but the words sound so full of emotion that it touches my heart until I'm at the brink of tears. I can see that the rest of the pack that joined is also moved, some choose to let their tears run freely.

We keep on listening while trying to spot whoever the beautiful voice is coming from. Far away I can see a mysterious figure sitting on one of the big rocks in the water and it seems like that's where the singing comes from. The person doesn't notice us as we keep coming closer, it's as if she is so into the song she doesn't even know we're there.

I want to know who is able to bring ten werewolves to tears by just singing so I quietly tell my pack members to follow the sound as close as we can get without crashing into the rocks. But just when we might be close enough to see woman the singing stops and the woman's silhuette is gone. The only proof that she was ever there is the soft sound still spreading in the wind and the unshed tears in our eyes. We keep on looking for a while longer until we have to head back.

When we get home I go straight to my room, undress and lay down on top of the bed. I still can't get that voice out of my mind. The emotions that filled the song with colors were everything from happiness to emptiness but what I heard the most was sadness. Whoever was singing must have been through a great deal to be able to sing with such emotion. I want to know who this person is and I'm going to find out.

Aquatia's POV

That was a close one. I was so focused on my singing that I first didn't notice the ship heading towards me. Thankfully I discovered it in time to get back in the water to hide before anyone could see me clearly. My singing and conflicting emotions has made me tired again so I go back to sleep in the small cave while thinking about tomorrow when I will take my first steps on land.

When I wake up it's in the middle of dawn so I get up and drag myself and my bags up on the beach before anyone comes here. I think of myself as a human and it doesn't take long until my tail starts tingling and it splits into two legs instead. I stand up and carefully walk towards the water to look at myself. When I touch the water my legs still remain, luckily. I’ve never actually tested that theory but I’m glad it was a myth.

And when I look at my reflection in the water I look just as I did when I was a mermaid, except for the tail of course. Maybe it would be good if my appearance changed a bit just in case someone I know would spot me. After all, I'm a bit of a celebrity in the mer-world being golden-tailed and all.

I look at myself in the water again before I decide. I picture myself with wavy hair in different shades of purple and some golden highlights reaching down to just above my behind and when I open my eyes I can see it worked. I notice that I'm also naked so I close my eyes once again picturing clothes. I picture myself wearing dark skinny jeans, a light blue crop top, a jeans jacket and light blue converse. You would think I don't have a clue what humans wear but in my old school you got to learn about humans, what they eat, wear, do and so on. Therefore I am prepared, at least a little.

I walk out of the water and use some of my powers to dry my shoes and jeans before I grab my bags and head towards the city I saw last night.

When I get there I see a sign saying "Welcome to Newport!" so I guess that's the name of the city. As I walk around town many people stare at me and I notice that most people here are werewolves. I know because every mermaid or merman can tell what a person is by looking at them. However they don't know what I am. They can only smell saltwater from me which makes them raise an eyebrow. Knowing this I just ignore their stares and walk until I find a building where it says "Real Estate" on.

Only two hours later I walk into my new apartment. It's close to both the beach and my new school, which I enrolled in on my way here. I noticed it's a school mainly for werewolves but they let me in anyways. Perhaps because they can tell I'm not human even if they can't put a finger on what I am.

My new apartment is quite small to be honest but I won't spend much time here. It has one living room with a small TV, one kitchen, one bedroom with a queen sized bed and one bathroom with a shower. It's perfect for me. I paid for the apartment with pearls and gold coins I found on the bottom of the ocean which made the person who I bought it from look a bit funny at me but they accepted it nonetheless. So here I am. It's Sunday afternoon and tomorrow is my first day at my new school.

I decide to go for a quick swim so I walk back to the deserted beach and turn back into a mermaid when I'm sure no one can see me. However, I keep my purple hair even if my tail remains the same bright, sparkling gold color. I enjoy the ocean and swim around, even talking to some fish at the bottom before I see the sun setting and make my way back to my apartment where I fall asleep on the queen sized bed with white covers with blue seashells on it. The last thing on my mind is the questions about what tomorrow has to offer for me in my new life. Something is about to happen. I can feel it.
