Chapter 3: The wolf inside me

last update publish date: 2026-10-31 20:38:11

The first thing I noticed when I opened my eyes was the unfamiliar ceiling.

For a few seconds, I couldn't remember where I was.

Then everything came rushing back.

Damon.

Vanessa.

The rejection.

I sat up quickly, only to feel a wave of dizziness.

"Easy."

I turned towards the voice.

An older woman stood beside the bed, holding a small glass of water. Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head, and her eyes were gentle.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Maeve. I'm the healer Alexander called."

I looked around the room.

"Where is he?"

"Alexander? He's downstairs. He wanted to make sure you were comfortable before leaving you to rest."

I lowered my eyes.

"How long have I been here?"

"About two hours."

She handed me the water.

"Drink slowly."

I accepted it and took a few sips.

"Thank you."

Maeve pulled a chair closer to the bed.

"Now, Serena, I need to ask you something. When was the last time you felt your wolf?"

I stared at her.

"My wolf?"

She nodded.

I hesitated before answering.

"I've never really felt her. Not properly."

Maeve's expression became thoughtful.

"Never?"

"I've always known she was there, but she's never spoken to me. I thought she was just weak."

The healer studied my face.

"And what happened before you collapsed?"

I remembered the strange warmth in my chest.

"I heard something."

"What did you hear?"

"A voice. It called my name."

Maeve went completely still.

I noticed the change in her expression.

"What's wrong?"

She didn't answer immediately. Instead, she reached for my wrist and gently checked my pulse.

"Did the voice sound familiar?"

"No. But it felt like it came from inside me."

Maeve released my hand.

"Your wolf may be trying to reach you."

I frowned.

"After all these years?"

"Sometimes, what we believe is missing is simply waiting for the right moment."

I wanted to ask more, but a knock interrupted us.

Alexander entered carrying a tray.

"I brought something to eat."

His eyes moved from Maeve to me.

"How is she?"

"She needs rest," Maeve replied. "And proper food."

Alexander placed the tray on the small table beside my bed.

"Then she gets both."

I looked at him.

"You don't have to keep doing all this."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Doing what?"

"Helping me."

"Would you rather I leave you on the roadside?"

Despite everything, a small laugh escaped me.

It was brief, but genuine.

Alexander noticed.

"Good. At least you can still laugh."

I looked down, embarrassed.

Maeve stood.

"Let her eat. I'll come back later."

Before leaving, she gave me one last thoughtful look.

"Serena, don't be afraid of what you hear inside yourself. We'll talk more when you're stronger."

I nodded.

When the door closed, Alexander pulled the chair closer.

"Are you comfortable here?"

"Yes."

"Good."

He paused.

"You're welcome to stay until you're well enough to decide what you want to do next. There's no pressure."

I looked at him carefully.

"Why are you being so kind to a stranger?"

He leaned back.

"Because someone should have been kind to you."

His answer caught me off guard.

I quickly looked away, pretending to be interested in the food.

We sat quietly for a while.

Then he spoke again.

"Did something happen in Blackthorn territory?"

My fingers stopped moving.

I didn't want to talk about Damon. Not yet.

"I was rejected."

Alexander's expression hardened slightly.

"By your mate?"

I nodded.

"He chose someone else."

He didn't ask who.

He didn't tell me I should forgive him.

He simply said, "I'm sorry."

And somehow, that was enough.

After he left, I finished my meal and settled back against the pillows.

I was beginning to feel tired again when the warmth returned to my chest.

This time, it was stronger.

I closed my eyes.

"Who are you?" I whispered.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then a voice answered.

I am not weak, Serena.

My breath caught.

I sat up.

You were never weak.

My heart began beating faster.

"Who are you?"

A strange feeling spread through my body, like something powerful stretching after a very long sleep.

Then the voice spoke again.

I am the part of you they were never meant to see.

I froze.

Before I could ask another question, the bedroom door opened.

Maeve stood there.

She looked at my face, then at the faint glow appearing beneath the skin of my wrist.

The glass in her hand slipped and shattered against the floor.

"Impossible," she whispered.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Maeve stepped closer, her eyes filled with disbelief.

"Alexander needs to know about this."

"Why?"

She looked directly into my eyes.

"Because, Serena, I don't think your wolf is an ordinary wolf."

And before I could ask what she meant, she whispered a name I had never heard before.

"The pack council has requested a meeting about you."I stared at Alexander."About me?"He nodded."What do they want?""They want to understand why you're staying here and what your presence could mean for the pack."I folded my arms."Then tell them I'm recovering. There's nothing complicated about that.""I already explained that.""And they still want a meeting?""Some people aren't satisfied with explanations."I let out a quiet breath.I had barely spent a few days in this territory, yet somehow I was already becoming a subject of discussion."Fine. When is the meeting?""Tomorrow morning."I nodded."I'll be there."Alexander studied me."You don't have to face them alone.""I know. But I can speak for myself.""I wasn't suggesting otherwise."His answer was calm, and I appreciated that he didn't turn my words into an argument."Good," I said. "Because I don't want anyone thinking I need someone to answer questions for me."A faint smile appeared on his face."I've noticed."I

"Rowan, if you hurt her because you underestimate what she is, you'll answer to me."Alexander's words silenced the training grounds.Rowan lowered his staff slightly and glanced at him."You're making this personal, Alpha.""I'm making it clear. This is a training challenge, not an excuse to prove how strong you are."I tightened my grip on my staff.I appreciated Alexander's concern, but I didn't want him fighting my battles for me."Let him speak for himself," I said.Alexander looked at me."Are you certain?""Yes."He studied my expression for a moment before stepping back."Then begin."Rowan moved first. He came towards me quickly, swinging his staff towards my shoulder. I barely managed to block it. The impact travelled through my arms, forcing me to take two steps backwards. He was stronger than I expected.I adjusted my stance, trying to remember everything Maeve had taught me."Don't rush," my wolf whispered.I watched Rowan carefully. He attacked again. This time, I moved

I woke up earlier than usual the following morning. For the first time since leaving Blackthorn territory, I wasn't thinking about Damon or Vanessa. My mind was occupied by something else.Training.I sat up and looked at my hands.Yesterday, I had accidentally cracked a wooden staff without even trying. I still couldn't understand how that had happened."You're awake," a familiar voice said inside my head.I froze for a moment. My wolf."Of course I'm awake. You wouldn't stop thinking all night."I frowned. "You can hear my thoughts?""Some of them.""That's uncomfortable."I could almost feel her amusement."Then stop thinking so loudly."I shook my head, unable to stop a small smile from forming. For someone who had been silent for most of my life, my wolf certainly had a lot to say now.I got dressed and headed downstairs. Maeve was already waiting with a small bag and two wooden staffs."Good morning, Serena.""Good morning."She handed me one of the staffs."Today, we're going t

I folded the old document and placed it inside my bag.I still had questions about the words written on it, but I wasn't ready to spend another day worrying about my past. For once, I wanted to think about myself.I wanted to know who I was without Damon, without Blackthorn territory, and without constantly trying to please someone. Most importantly, I wanted to understand the strange wolf living inside me.After breakfast, I decided to explore Alexander's garden. The moment I stepped outside, I noticed how peaceful everything looked. Flowers lined the pathways, birds moved between the trees, and a small pond reflected the morning sunlight.I sat on a bench and closed my eyes. You are thinking too much.I opened my eyes. There it was again. My wolf."You're becoming quite comfortable talking to me," I whispered.Would you prefer silence?I almost smiled."After ignoring me for years? You don't get to complain."I felt something like amusement inside my mind.I never ignored you."Then

I was halfway through breakfast when Alexander entered the dining room.Something about his expression told me the morning wasn't going to be peaceful."Is everything all right?" I asked. He pulled out the chair opposite mine."Someone came from Blackthorn territory."My spoon stopped halfway to my mouth."Damon?""His representative."I slowly put the spoon down."What does he want?""He says Damon wants you returned."For a moment, I couldn't believe what I had heard.Returned? As though I were a missing possession.I let out a short, bitter laugh."That's interesting. He was quite happy to throw me out yesterday."Alexander watched me carefully."Do you want me to send the man away?"I nodded."Please."He stood, but I spoke again."Wait."He turned."I want to speak to him."Alexander hesitated."Are you sure you're ready?""No. But I'm tired of people making decisions about my life without asking me."He studied me for a moment before nodding."All right. I'll stay nearby."A few

l stared at Maeve."The Sovereign Wolf?"She nodded slowly."What does that mean?"Maeve looked towards the door before pulling the chair closer to my bed."It means the wolf inside you is extremely rare. But I don't want you getting the wrong idea. Having a rare wolf doesn't mean you suddenly know how to fight, control your abilities, or lead others."I frowned."So I'm not automatically powerful?"A small smile touched her lips."You're asking the right questions."I looked down at my wrist. The faint glow had disappeared, leaving my skin looking perfectly normal."Then why has my wolf been silent all these years?""That is something we'll need to understand. But first, you need to recover. Your body has been through a lot."The door opened, and Alexander walked in."What happened? I heard something break."Maeve glanced at the broken glass on the floor."Serena's wolf has finally made contact."Alexander looked at me."Are you feeling better?"I nodded. Then Maeve said something th
