Chapter 2: The Road Beyond His Pack

I refused to cry.

Not in front of Damon.

Not in front of Vanessa.

And definitely not in front of the pack members who had gathered outside the Alpha's residence to watch me leave.

I walked through the entrance with my small travel bag hanging from my shoulder. Every step felt heavier than the last, but I kept my head up.

The pack members whispered as I passed.

Some looked at me with pity. Others looked away, pretending they hadn't heard what happened.

I wondered how many of them already knew.

How long had Damon and Vanessa been laughing behind my back while I continued believing I was loved?

"Serena."

I stopped.

Vanessa stood a few steps behind me, wearing a beautiful smile. She had changed into a cream-colored dress, and her hair fell perfectly over her shoulders.

She looked like someone who had just won something.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"Nothing. I just wanted to make sure you're leaving peacefully."

I stared at her.

"Don't pretend to care about me."

Her smile widened slightly.

"You know, I never thought you would make this easy."

I tightened my grip on my bag.

"Make what easy?"

"Leaving Damon."

I almost laughed.

"Believe me, Vanessa. I'm not the one who should be worried about losing him."

Her expression changed.

For a moment, the sweetness disappeared from her face.

Then she stepped closer and lowered her voice.

"You're no longer his mate. You have no place here."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"Then enjoy the place you stole. I hope it gives you everything you wanted."

I turned away before she could answer.

The gates opened, and I walked out.

Behind me, the pack that had once been my home slowly disappeared from view.

I didn't know where I was going. I only knew I couldn't stay there another minute.

The road was quiet, surrounded by tall trees. My phone had barely any battery left, and I had no one I wanted to call.

My parents were gone. My friends had turned out to be nothing more than familiar faces.

And Damon...

I pushed the thought away.

A strange pressure suddenly spread through my chest.

I stopped walking.

Something felt wrong.

My wolf had always been quiet, but now I could almost feel it moving somewhere deep inside me.

I pressed a hand against my chest.

"What's happening to me?"

There was no answer.

I continued walking, but my legs were beginning to feel weak. The rejection had taken more from me than I had expected.

By the time I reached a bend in the road, my vision had started to blur.

I tried to take another step.

Then my knees gave way.

My bag slipped from my shoulder and landed beside me.

I closed my eyes, hoping the dizziness would pass.

Instead, I heard the sound of a vehicle approaching.

A car slowed down nearby.

"Hey!"

A man's voice reached me.

I tried to lift my head, but everything was spinning.

Footsteps approached.

"Miss? Can you hear me?"

I wanted to answer, but my voice refused to come out.

The stranger crouched beside me.

"You're freezing."

He took off his jacket and placed it around my shoulders.

"Look at me. What's your name?"

I forced my eyes open.

A man with dark hair and sharp features was looking down at me. His expression was serious, but there was no cruelty in his eyes.

"Serena," I whispered.

"Serena, I'm Alexander."

He glanced at the empty road before looking back at me.

"Are you hurt?"

I shook my head weakly.

"Where are you coming from?"

I swallowed.

"Blackthorn territory."

His expression changed slightly.

"Blackthorn?"

I nodded.

He didn't ask another question immediately. Instead, he picked up my bag and helped me sit up.

"Can you stand?"

I tried, but my legs trembled.

Alexander caught my arm before I fell again.

"Easy. Don't force yourself."

"I can manage."

"I believe you," he replied calmly. "But you don't have to prove it right now."

For some reason, those words almost made me cry.

I looked away.

Alexander helped me into his vehicle and placed my bag beside me. Before getting into the driver's seat, he made a phone call.

"Maeve, I need you at the house. I've found someone who needs help."

He listened for a moment.

"Yes. I'll explain when I arrive."

When he ended the call, he looked at me.

"There's a healer where I'm taking you. She'll check that you're all right."

"I don't have money to pay you."

"I didn't ask for money."

"I don't even know you."

"That's true," he said, starting the engine. "But I know what it looks like when someone needs help."

I turned towards the window.

The trees moved past us as we drove away from the road where I had fallen.

After a while, I gathered enough courage to ask a question.

"Why did you stop?"

Alexander glanced at me briefly.

"Because you were lying in the middle of the road."

"Most people would have kept driving."

"Then most people made the wrong choice."

I didn't know what to say.

For the first time since leaving Damon's territory, someone had spoken to me without making me feel worthless.

I leaned my head against the seat.

But just as I began to relax, a strange warmth spread through my chest again.

My fingers tightened around the jacket.

A faint voice seemed to whisper from somewhere deep inside me.

Serena...

My eyes widened.

I looked around the vehicle.

"Did you hear that?"

Alexander glanced at me.

"Hear what?"

I stared at him, confused.

The voice came again, softer this time.

Wake up.

My breath caught.

I had spent my entire life believing my wolf was weak.

But whatever I had just heard did not sound weak.

It sounded like something that had been waiting for me.

And now, after all these years, it was finally awake.

  • The Sovereign Wolf's Rejection   Chapter 9: The Council Doesn't Want Me Here

"The pack council has requested a meeting about you."I stared at Alexander."About me?"He nodded."What do they want?""They want to understand why you're staying here and what your presence could mean for the pack."I folded my arms."Then tell them I'm recovering. There's nothing complicated about that.""I already explained that.""And they still want a meeting?""Some people aren't satisfied with explanations."I let out a quiet breath.I had barely spent a few days in this territory, yet somehow I was already becoming a subject of discussion."Fine. When is the meeting?""Tomorrow morning."I nodded."I'll be there."Alexander studied me."You don't have to face them alone.""I know. But I can speak for myself.""I wasn't suggesting otherwise."His answer was calm, and I appreciated that he didn't turn my words into an argument."Good," I said. "Because I don't want anyone thinking I need someone to answer questions for me."A faint smile appeared on his face."I've noticed."I

"Rowan, if you hurt her because you underestimate what she is, you'll answer to me."Alexander's words silenced the training grounds.Rowan lowered his staff slightly and glanced at him."You're making this personal, Alpha.""I'm making it clear. This is a training challenge, not an excuse to prove how strong you are."I tightened my grip on my staff.I appreciated Alexander's concern, but I didn't want him fighting my battles for me."Let him speak for himself," I said.Alexander looked at me."Are you certain?""Yes."He studied my expression for a moment before stepping back."Then begin."Rowan moved first. He came towards me quickly, swinging his staff towards my shoulder. I barely managed to block it. The impact travelled through my arms, forcing me to take two steps backwards. He was stronger than I expected.I adjusted my stance, trying to remember everything Maeve had taught me."Don't rush," my wolf whispered.I watched Rowan carefully. He attacked again. This time, I moved

  • The Sovereign Wolf's Rejection   Chapter 7: The Strength I Cannot Control

I woke up earlier than usual the following morning. For the first time since leaving Blackthorn territory, I wasn't thinking about Damon or Vanessa. My mind was occupied by something else.Training.I sat up and looked at my hands.Yesterday, I had accidentally cracked a wooden staff without even trying. I still couldn't understand how that had happened."You're awake," a familiar voice said inside my head.I froze for a moment. My wolf."Of course I'm awake. You wouldn't stop thinking all night."I frowned. "You can hear my thoughts?""Some of them.""That's uncomfortable."I could almost feel her amusement."Then stop thinking so loudly."I shook my head, unable to stop a small smile from forming. For someone who had been silent for most of my life, my wolf certainly had a lot to say now.I got dressed and headed downstairs. Maeve was already waiting with a small bag and two wooden staffs."Good morning, Serena.""Good morning."She handed me one of the staffs."Today, we're going t

  • The Sovereign Wolf's Rejection   Chapter 6: I Don't Need Your Help

I folded the old document and placed it inside my bag.I still had questions about the words written on it, but I wasn't ready to spend another day worrying about my past. For once, I wanted to think about myself.I wanted to know who I was without Damon, without Blackthorn territory, and without constantly trying to please someone. Most importantly, I wanted to understand the strange wolf living inside me.After breakfast, I decided to explore Alexander's garden. The moment I stepped outside, I noticed how peaceful everything looked. Flowers lined the pathways, birds moved between the trees, and a small pond reflected the morning sunlight.I sat on a bench and closed my eyes. You are thinking too much.I opened my eyes. There it was again. My wolf."You're becoming quite comfortable talking to me," I whispered.Would you prefer silence?I almost smiled."After ignoring me for years? You don't get to complain."I felt something like amusement inside my mind.I never ignored you."Then

  • The Sovereign Wolf's Rejection   Chapter 5: He Has No Right

I was halfway through breakfast when Alexander entered the dining room.Something about his expression told me the morning wasn't going to be peaceful."Is everything all right?" I asked. He pulled out the chair opposite mine."Someone came from Blackthorn territory."My spoon stopped halfway to my mouth."Damon?""His representative."I slowly put the spoon down."What does he want?""He says Damon wants you returned."For a moment, I couldn't believe what I had heard.Returned? As though I were a missing possession.I let out a short, bitter laugh."That's interesting. He was quite happy to throw me out yesterday."Alexander watched me carefully."Do you want me to send the man away?"I nodded."Please."He stood, but I spoke again."Wait."He turned."I want to speak to him."Alexander hesitated."Are you sure you're ready?""No. But I'm tired of people making decisions about my life without asking me."He studied me for a moment before nodding."All right. I'll stay nearby."A few

l stared at Maeve."The Sovereign Wolf?"She nodded slowly."What does that mean?"Maeve looked towards the door before pulling the chair closer to my bed."It means the wolf inside you is extremely rare. But I don't want you getting the wrong idea. Having a rare wolf doesn't mean you suddenly know how to fight, control your abilities, or lead others."I frowned."So I'm not automatically powerful?"A small smile touched her lips."You're asking the right questions."I looked down at my wrist. The faint glow had disappeared, leaving my skin looking perfectly normal."Then why has my wolf been silent all these years?""That is something we'll need to understand. But first, you need to recover. Your body has been through a lot."The door opened, and Alexander walked in."What happened? I heard something break."Maeve glanced at the broken glass on the floor."Serena's wolf has finally made contact."Alexander looked at me."Are you feeling better?"I nodded. Then Maeve said something th
