I regretted agreeing to the group assignment the moment I stepped into the library.

Not because of the assignment.

Because of Great.

He was already there.

Of course he was.

He sat at one of the tables near the window, his laptop open in front of him. He looked completely relaxed, like he hadn't spent the entire morning irritating me.

Ada waved when she saw me.

"Chisom! Over here."

I walked toward them and dropped my bag onto the chair.

Great looked up.

"You're late."

I checked my phone.

"I'm two minutes late."

"Still late."

I stared at him.

"You've been waiting for two minutes and you've already started complaining?"

"Exactly."

I pulled out my chair.

"Then next time, start without me."

"I would have, but we're missing something."

"What?"

He pushed a sheet of paper toward me.

"Our research topic."

I picked it up.

I read the topic once.

Then again.

"You chose this?"

Great nodded.

"You don't like it?"

"I hate it."

Ada laughed.

Michael looked between us.

"You two are going to kill each other before we finish this assignment."

"She's the one with the problem," Great said.

I looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

"You've been angry with me since yesterday."

"You stole my seat."

"I gave it back."

"You took my pen."

"I returned it."

"You followed me to the library."

"You followed me too."

"I was coming here for the assignment."

"So was I."

I opened my mouth.

Then closed it.

Ada covered her smile with her hand.

"I think you two should just get married and save us the stress."

"Absolutely not," I said.

"Never," Great said at the exact same time.

We looked at each other.

For some reason, that made Ada laugh even harder.

I shook my head.

"Can we please focus?"

For the next hour, surprisingly, we did.

Great wasn't as useless as I expected.

Actually, he was annoyingly good.

He explained complicated points clearly, found useful sources quickly, and even noticed a mistake in my notes that I hadn't seen.

I hated admitting it, but he was smart.

Very smart.

"You've been quiet for five minutes," he said.

I looked up.

"So?"

"I'm beginning to think you don't know what to say."

I scoffed.

"I'm just concentrating."

"On me?"

I nearly choked.

"In your dreams."

He laughed.

That laugh caught me off guard.

It wasn't the arrogant laugh I'd heard yesterday.

It was genuine.

Warm.

For a second, I forgot to look away.

His eyes met mine.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Michael cleared his throat.

"So... are we continuing?"

I immediately looked down at my notes.

"Yes."

Great leaned back in his chair, still smiling.

I ignored him.

At least I tried to.

By the time we finished, it was almost evening.

Ada and Michael left first.

I packed my things slowly.

Outside, dark clouds had gathered over the campus.

I checked my phone.

No missed calls.

No messages.

I sighed.

I had forgotten my umbrella.

Great stood beside me.

"You don't have an umbrella?"

"No."

He opened his bag and pulled one out.

"Come."

I looked at him.

"Come where?"

"I'll walk you."

"I can manage."

"I didn't ask if you could."

I frowned.

"You're always telling people what to do."

"And you're always arguing."

"Because you're annoying."

He smiled.

"Then we're consistent."

I wanted to refuse.

I really did.

But the first drops of rain landed on the pavement.

I looked at the sky.

Then at the umbrella.

Then at Great.

"Fine."

We walked side by side.

The umbrella wasn't big enough for two people, so our shoulders kept brushing.

Every time it happened, I moved slightly away.

Every time I moved, Great adjusted the umbrella toward me.

"You'll get wet," I said.

"I'm fine."

"You've barely covered yourself."

"You're the one who needs it."

I looked at him.

For the first time since we'd met, he wasn't teasing me.

He was serious.

Something about that made my chest feel strangely warm.

We reached the junction where we had to separate.

I stopped.

"Thanks."

He nodded.

"You're welcome."

I turned to leave.

"Chisom."

I looked back.

He held out his hand.

"Your pen."

I stared at him.

Then laughed.

"You still have it?"

He nodded.

"I told you I'd return it."

I took it from him.

"Keep it next time."

He smiled.

"Maybe I will."

I walked away before he could say anything else.

But halfway down the road, I caught myself smiling.

I immediately stopped.

"No."

I shook my head.

"Absolutely not."

I wasn't falling for him.

I barely even liked him.

At least, that's what I told myself.

That night, as I lay in bed, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Great: You forgot your notebook.

I sat up.

I checked my bag.

It wasn't there.

Another message appeared.

Great: Don't worry. I have it.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message came.

Great: You'll have to see me tomorrow.

I frowned.

I typed a reply.

Deleted it.

Typed another.

Deleted that one too.

Finally, I sent:

Me: Bring it to class.

His reply came almost immediately.

Great: I will.

Then, after a few seconds:

Great: Goodnight, seat thief.

I smiled before I could stop myself.

Then I threw my phone onto the bed.

This boy was going to be a problem.

I just didn't know yet how big of a problem he would become.

"Run."For a moment, I couldn't move.Great's fingers tightened around my wrist, and for the first time since I'd known him, I saw something in his eyes that frightened me more than the stranger standing beside the black car.Fear.Not the kind people felt when they heard a strange noise in the middle of the night. This was different. Deeper. Older. It was the kind of fear that came from recognizing a ghost you had spent years trying to bury."Great?" My voice barely escaped my throat. "What's happening?"He didn't answer. The stranger lifted the photograph again, his gaze moving from the picture to Great. Then he smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile. It was the smile of someone who had finally found what he had been searching for."Running away again, Great?" the man called.Great went completely still. My stomach twisted.Again? Before I could ask what that meant, Great pulled me toward the narrow path beside the campus library."Don't look back," he ordered.Naturally, I looked back.

  • The Space Between Us    Chapter 5 — The Warning

I didn't sleep. Not really.I spent most of the night staring at my ceiling, replaying the phone call in my head.Stay away from Great. The voice had been deep.Calm.Too calm. There had been no anger in it. No hesitation. Whoever had called me hadn't sounded like someone trying to scare me for fun. They had sounded like someone who knew exactly what they were talking about.I turned onto my side and pulled the blanket closer.Maybe it was a prank.Maybe someone was jealous of Great.Maybe Vanessa was behind it.That thought made me sit up.Vanessa.She was the first person who had warned me about Great. You don't know what kind of person he is.And now someone else was telling me the exact same thing.Coincidence?I didn't believe in coincidences anymore. My phone lay beside me on the bed.I stared at it.Part of me wanted to call Great. The other part reminded me that he had already given me more questions than answers. So I didn't.Instead, I closed my eyes.My phone vibrated.I ju

I barely slept that night.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the picture Great had sent me.Him and Vanessa.Standing close.Too close. Then her words came back. You don't know what kind of person he is.I turned over in bed and pulled my blanket over my head. Why did I even care?Great wasn't my boyfriend. He wasn't even my friend. At least, that's what I had told myself. But somewhere along the line, he had become more than just the irritating guy who stole my seat.He was the person I looked for whenever I entered a room. The person whose messages I secretly waited for.The person who could make me laugh when I was determined not to.And that realization annoyed me more than anything Vanessa had said.My phone lit up.Great: Are you awake?I stared at the message.I didn't reply.Another one c

  • The Space Between Us    Chapter Three: The Rumor

The next morning, I arrived on campus determined to prove something to myself.Great Williams did not affect me.Not his stupid smile. Not his irritating confidence. Not the way he'd looked at me under that umbrella yesterday.Nothing.I walked into the lecture hall, dropped my bag onto my usual seat, and opened my notebook. Two minutes later, someone sat beside me.I didn't look."Good morning."I recognized the voice immediately."Morning."Great leaned closer."You sound disappointed.""I'm not.""You didn't even look at me.""I don't need to look at you to know you're here."He chuckled."Interesting."I finally turned toward him."Where's my notebook?"He placed it on the desk between us."Good morning to you too."I grabbed it."Thank you.""You could at least smile.""I am smiling.""That's not a smile.""Then stop looking at my face."He laughed.I tried not to smile.I failed. He noticed.Of course he did."There it is."I immediately looked away."Don't flatter yourself."Be

  • The Space Between Us     Chapter One:THE BOY IN MY SEAT

The first thing I learned about Great was that he had absolutely no respect for other people's property. The second thing I learned was that he looked annoyingly good while doing it. I stood at the entrance of Lecture Hall B, staring at the stranger occupying my seat. My seat. The seat I'd been sitting in since the beginning of the semester. The seat I'd chosen because it was close enough to the lecturer for me to hear everything, but far enough from the front that I wouldn't be volunteered for every question. And now some guy was sitting there like he had paid rent. I tightened my grip around my notebook. "Excuse me." He didn't move. I cleared my throat. "Excuse me." Nothing. He was staring down at his phone, one earbud hanging loosely from his ear, completely oblivious to the fact that I was standing directly in front of him. I tapped the edge of his desk. He finally looked up. And for one stupid second, I forgot what I wanted to say. He had the kind of face that wo
