Lily's POV

I waited until the house was asleep.

Ethan had fallen asleep a little after eleven, with one arm thrown over his eyes and Duke stretched across the foot of the bed. I lay on my sofa in the dark and listened to him breathe. Every few minutes, I touched the card in my pocket to make sure it was still there.

Come alone. If you bring the Blackwoods, the truth dies with me.

I knew it was a trap. I wasn't stupid. But all my life, I had believed I knew who I was. I was Lily Carter, the daughter of a woman who worked two jobs and sang in our tiny kitchen. Now I didn't know anything anymore. And the only person who had the answer was the woman who had tried to kill my husband.

At half past eleven, I got up. I put on my old jeans and the gray sweater I had brought from home, the only clothes in that house that were really mine. I picked up my shoes and carried them in my hand.

At the door, I stopped and looked back at Ethan.

I almost woke him. I almost told him everything. But I thought about Margaret's words, the truth dies with me, and I thought about how he would never let me go. So I wrote him a short note on the back of a receipt and left it on my pillow.

I'm sorry. I had to find out. I'll be back before morning. Lily.

Duke lifted his head and watched me. I put a finger to my lips. He didn't bark, but he whined very softly as I closed the door.

The taxi I had called was waiting at the bottom of the hill, where the guards couldn't see it. The driver didn't talk, and I was glad. I texted Carla to make sure the guard was still outside Noah's door. She wrote back right away that he was asleep and safe, and only then could I breathe. We drove out of the city and into the dark, past empty fields and black trees, until the road turned to gravel and the lights of the last town were far behind us.

The lake house sat at the end of a long dirt road. It was bigger than I expected, made of dark wood and glass, with a wide porch that looked out over the water. Only one window was lit. The moon was shining on the lake, and everything was so quiet that I could hear the water hitting the shore.

"You want me to wait?" the driver asked.

"Yes," I said. "Please. I won't be long."

I walked up the steps. The front door was open.

Inside, a fire was burning in a big stone fireplace. Margaret Sinclair sat in a chair beside it, wearing the same long blue coat Carla had described. She had a glass of white wine in her hand, and she smiled when she saw me, like I was a guest she had been looking forward to.

"Lily," she said. "You came. And alone, too. Good girl."

"Don't call me that," I said.

She laughed softly. "Sit down. You look cold."

"I'll stand."

"As you like." She took a slow sip of her wine. "I'll be honest with you, since that seems to be your new favorite thing. I didn't think you would come. I thought you would run straight to Ethan with my little card. But you didn't. That tells me you want this very badly."

"You said you would tell me who my mother was," I said. My voice was shaking, and I hated it. "So tell me."

Margaret put her glass down on the small table beside her. Then she picked up something I hadn't seen, a tiny plastic band, yellow with age. She held it up so the firelight caught it.

It was a hospital bracelet. The kind they put on newborn babies.

"St. Mary's Hospital," Margaret read. "Baby girl Sinclair. March twelfth." She turned it in her fingers. "Do you know where I found this, Lily? Around the ankle of a baby who was not mine."

The floor seemed to drop away under me.

"So it's true," I whispered.

"I didn't say that," Margaret said. "I said I would tell you. I didn't say it would be free."

She reached into her coat and took out a folded paper and a pen. She held them out to me.

"Divorce papers," she said. "Already signed by a very good lawyer who owes me a favor. You sign Vanessa's name at the bottom, the same way you did at your little bedside wedding. Then you get in that taxi, you pick up your brother, and you leave this city forever. And before you go, I'll tell you everything. Your mother's name. Why it happened. All of it."

I stared at the papers. I thought about Ethan asleep with his arm over his eyes. I thought about the way he had kissed me, and the way he had laughed with Noah over a cup of pudding.

"And if I say no?" I asked.

Margaret's smile didn't change. "Then you'll never know who you are."

For a long moment, the only sound was the fire.

Then I stepped back.

"No," I said.

Margaret's eyebrows went up. "No?"

"I don't need to know that badly," I said. "Not if the price is leaving him alone with you. You poisoned him. You sat with my brother and scared him half to death. I'm not signing anything you give me."

Something cold moved behind Margaret's eyes. She stood up slowly and put the bracelet back in her pocket.

"That's a shame," she said. "You really are your mother's daughter. She was stubborn too."

"You knew her," I said. "You knew my real mother."

"Better than anyone," Margaret said.

She walked past me toward the door. I turned to follow her, but she was faster than I expected. She stepped outside, and the heavy door slammed shut behind her. I heard a key turn in the lock.

"Margaret!" I grabbed the handle and pulled. It didn't move. "Open the door!"

Through the glass, I watched her walk down the steps to the gravel. My taxi was gone. In its place sat a gray car with its lights off. Richard got out of the driver's side and opened the door for her.

I ran to the back of the house. The kitchen door was locked too. Every window I tried was sealed shut.

Then I smelled it.

Gas. Sweet and sharp and everywhere, coming from the kitchen, where every knob on the big black stove had been turned all the way on.

And behind me, in the living room, the fire was still burning.

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    Back from the Dead

Lily's POVWe didn't sleep that night.By the time the fire trucks left the lake house, it was almost four in the morning. A doctor cleaned the glass out of my hands in the back of an ambulance and wrapped them in white bandages. Ethan sat beside me the whole time with Duke at his feet, and he didn't let go of my arm once. The police asked me what happened. I told them the truth. A woman invited me there, locked me inside, and turned on the gas. When they asked me her name, I looked at Ethan."Not yet," he said quietly. "When we tell them, it has to stick."So I said I didn't know her, and I hated how easy the lie came out.Back at the house, Eleanor was waiting in the front hall in her robe, with her cane in both hands. She didn't say a word when she saw my bandages. She just put her thin arms around me and held me for a long time. It was the first time she had ever hugged me. She smelled like lavender and old books, and for a moment I felt like someone's granddaughter."Richard came

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    Fire on the Water

Lily's POVFor one second, I couldn't move. The smell was everywhere now, filling my nose and the back of my throat. I knew enough from the diner kitchen to know what happened when gas found a flame. One spark, and the whole house would go up with me inside it.I ran into the kitchen and pulled my sweater up over my mouth. My eyes were burning. I grabbed the knobs on the stove and turned them off one by one, four, five, six, until the hissing stopped. But the room was already full, and the gas was moving toward the living room, toward the fire, with nothing to stop it.Water. I needed water. There was a big glass vase on the kitchen table, full of the same white flowers Margaret loved. I threw the flowers on the floor, grabbed the vase with both hands, and ran back to the living room. The fire was snapping and jumping in the stone fireplace. I threw the water as hard as I could. The flames hissed and shrank, but they didn't die. Half the logs were still glowing red.My head was starti

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    Flowers for Noah

Lily's POVMarcus drove faster than I had ever seen anyone drive.I sat in the back with my phone pressed to my ear, calling Noah's room again and again. Nobody answered. Every red light felt like an hour. Every car in front of us felt like it was trying to kill me.Ethan sat beside me. He wasn't supposed to be there. Eleanor had told him that if anyone saw him walking into a hospital on his own two feet, the whole plan would fall apart. Ethan had looked at her and said, "Then nobody will see," and put on a baseball cap and a pair of dark glasses and got in the car anyway."He's fine," Ethan kept saying. "Carla said he's fine. Breathe, Lily.""She sat with him," I said. "She sat with my brother and asked about his medicine. The same woman who put poison in your glass last night."He didn't answer that, because there was nothing to say. He just held my hand so tight it almost hurt, and I held his back.I thought about the night Noah's heart stopped, the alarms and the nurses running pa

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   Margaret Says Hello

Lily's POVI don't remember walking back down the east hall. One moment I was sitting in Eleanor's study, and the next I was standing outside Ethan's door with the photo of Rose still in my hand.Eleanor had told me to keep it. "Show him," she said. "He should hear it from you."When I opened the door, Ethan was standing by the window. He was dressed, with his hair still wet from the shower, and Duke was sitting at his feet. He turned around fast when he heard me."What did she say?" he asked. Then he saw my face, and his voice changed. "Lily. What happened?""She knows," I said. "She's known since the wedding. I told her everything."He crossed the room in four steps. He was still slow, but he didn't use the cane. He took my face in both hands and looked at me like he was checking for wounds."Did she threaten you?" he asked. "Did she say she would call the police?""No," I said. "She's on our side."He let out a breath. "My grandmother is never on anyone's side.""She is now," I sai

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   The Truth in the Study

Lily's POVI stared at the photo until my eyes burned. The young woman in the garden was smiling at whoever held the camera. She looked happy and a little shy, the way I looked in the only good picture my mother ever took of me. I touched the small mark below my own ear without meaning to."How long have you known?" I whispered.Eleanor leaned back in her chair. "Since the day you married my grandson."I looked up at her, and she almost smiled."Do you remember what I said to you at the wedding?" she asked. "I told you that you hated hospitals. Vanessa did hate them. She visited Ethan twice after his accident, and both times she left in under ten minutes. But you sat by his bed and held his hand like you'd been doing it your whole life. And when I said it, you didn't even know what I was talking about. I saw it in your face.""You never said anything," I said."I wanted to see what you would do," she said. "So I watched. Duke growled at Vanessa every time she came to this house, and o
