Ashley

I repeated without hesitation, "I want us to break up. Please. Reject me."

My voice trembled, raw with pain. Jace’s expression darkened, his jaw tight, fingers twitching as though fighting the urge to do something dangerous.

"No," he growled, his voice laced with finality. "Don’t even think about it."

The Alpha Command slammed into me like invisible chains, locking me in place. I couldn’t even breathe under the weight of his words.

"I’ve already told the elders about our bonding ceremony. The neighboring packs are invited. Soon, you’ll be Luna. No one else can take your place."

His grip tightened on my wrists, his warmth searing. "I know I wasn’t enough before," he murmured, voice thick with emotion. "But I want only you. Blaze is furious, heartbroken. We already lost Amy. We can’t lose you too."

The protest died on my lips as I slowly shook my head. Oh, how I wanted to believe him. How I wanted to believe for just a moment that his words were true.

But then the memory of being kidnapped—the terrifying emptiness of losing Amy—flooded me. I couldn’t forget the pain. I wanted to refuse him, to shut myself off and protect the part of me still broken.

Before I could speak, his voice came again, softer but insistent. "This is what my mom wanted for you. She dreamed of you becoming Luna. She would’ve been proud to see you lead the pack, like she did."

Luna Elena—she had saved me, raised me, treated me like family. She and Jace were all I had. The only ones who had ever been kind to me as I grew up in Moonlit Silver.

I felt my resolve falter. Maybe, just maybe, he was right. Elena had always believed in me, even when I couldn’t. Could I do this—for her? For myself?

Maybe, just maybe…

RING!

The shrill sound shattered the fragile moment. Jace tensed reflexively as the phone continued vibrating in his pocket.

I didn’t need to look. I already knew who it was. Carina.

She was the one person Jace would never ignore. Carina wasn’t like us—she couldn’t mind-link, as she was wolf-less. So, Jace carried his phone everywhere so she could reach him at all times.

I braced myself for him to pull away.

But he didn’t.

For the first time, he let the phone ring. Then, without checking the screen, he silenced it, leaned in, and pressed his lips to mine.

I thought I was stronger, but in that moment, I knew I didn’t have the courage to stand firm. Tears burned my eyes as I kissed him back.

For the first time, it felt like he had chosen me.

Days passed, but I was still healing. Without Amy, my wolf, my wounds lingered longer than before.

Jace, who had started to pay more attention to me, one day asked me to be helping Carina in the lab for her experiments.

Strangely, I didn’t resist. If being near her meant being close to him, then it was something I was willing to do for now.

Carina and I weren’t strangers. We had grown up together under Luna Elena’s care. As the former Beta’s daughter, she was seen as delicate and pampered from childhood, while I was the orphan—the stray, the Luna took in.

But we’re not very close, because like most of the wolves in the pack, she ignores me most of the time, even bullies me. She’s Jace’s beloved sister, so I’m willing to put up with her and take care of her.

That afternoon, Carina called me up to the laboratory. She needed help with a procedure.

"Ashley, dear, help me with something, will you?" Carina turned to me, holding up a glass bottle. It contained Silver Salt—a corrosive substance strong enough to melt the flesh of a werwolf.

Maybe it was because I had been trained to always be alert, I immediately noticed the glass bottle wobbling. I sprung into action, already walking quickly towards her.

"Watch out—!" I called out to her, panicking.

She struggled with the cork, shaking the bottle. In her struggle, the bottle of Silver Salt dropped out of her hand and rolled across the table.

I lunged, catching it just in time, ready to sigh in relief when—

White-hot pain exploded through my palm.

A few grains of Silver Salt had spilled onto my scars, causing my old battle wounds to open. Blood pooled from my tanned skin, before dripping onto the wooden floor.

I sucked in a sharp breath, fighting the urge to double over in pain as I watched the salt burn deep into my skin. “You should be more careful,” I said, straightening myself.

Then, I heard it. A laugh.

Carina wasn't looking at me with gratitude. No, not at all. Instead, she was smirking.

"Goddess, you're so nice that it actually sickens me," she sneered, tilting her head. "You're still as clumsy as ever. How did you even become a warrior with those two left feet?"

Something twisted in my stomach.

"What?"

"You really think you’ve won, don’t you?" Her voice turned mocking, her smile venomous. "Crawling into Jace’s bed while I was gone and now you're going to be Luna soon. I bet you're living on the clouds."

My body went rigid. She was testing the few patience I had left.

"I just have something to tell you.” She stepped close, looking at my bleeding arm like it was just a normal occurrence. “You're really nothing but a shield, Ashley," she whispered. "A placeholder. Doomed to never get what you truly want. Not even the one you love."

She lifted her hand, showing me something. There was a bracelet dangling between her fingers.

Luna Elena’s heirloom. An Alpha family treasure, passed down to every Luna of the pack.

It was the only thing that had been left behind after the Luna's disappearance.

My blood ran cold. Jace hadn't considered giving me. But obviously he didn't mind giving it to her. My fists clenched. Yet another proof of how little he regarded me.

"Want it?" Carina taunted, letting the delicate chain dangle carelessly. "I could give it to you. As charity."

She let go of the bracelet, watching it fall to the ground.

Without paying thought to it, I reached out, aiming to catch the precious item.

The moment my fingers brushed the bracelet, Carina gasped loudly and dramatically.

Then she stumbled back, clutching her wrist as if I had done something to it. Her eyes welled up with tears.

Just at that very moment, as though it had been perfectly timed and planned, the door to the lab burst open, and Jace entered..

He didn't even spare me a glance, but immediately just turned to her, drawn by her sniffing and pained gasps.

"Carina!" He was at her side in an instant, gripping her arm. "Are you okay?" He checked her bodies for injuries, making sure to ignore myself and my bleeding arm.

"Jace, don’t blame Ashley," she whispered, voice trembling. "She didn’t mean to hurt me. She just… got too excited when I showed her the bracelet. I shouldn’t have teased her. It’s my fault."

My stomach twisted.

It was an act. A perfect, rehearsed act.

And Jace fell for it. Again.

His eyes turned to me, hard. "Ashley, how could you?" Disbelief laced his voice. "Why would you fight over something so petty? You know Carina isn’t in good health."

I stared at him blankly, unable to even fully grasp the situation around us.

Then down at my arm—blood dripping onto the floor, a fresh wound burned open by Silver Salt. The sting of the Silver Salt burned through my hand, but that pain was nothing compared to the ache in my chest as I watched Jace rush past me like I was invisible.

All he cared about was her perfectly fine wrist.

A hollow laugh bubbled in my throat, carving its way out. "You know what? Fuck this!"

  • The Stand-In Luna   •Chapter 170•

SeleneLater, when gentle music filled the night sky and the feast spread out before them, Ashley found herself sitting with Zane a little ways from the crowd on a warm patch of grass. Lanterns cast a golden glow over his magnificent features, highlighting the strength in his jaw, the endless blue depth of his eyes. He looked like the man she had fallen for all over again: fierce, stubborn, but endlessly loyal. Just like how I created him to be.Ashley's thoughts had been gnawing at her all night, and finally she let them spill into the open like a cracked egg on the ground.“Zane,” she began softly, her fingers brushing the back of his hand, which she had placed on her thigh as she sat in front of him cross legged. “There’s something I need to tell you.”He turned to her instantly, always attuned to the subtle shifts in her tone. “What is it?”She exhaled, staring at the stars above, meeting eyes with me but oblivious to that fact. “I was afraid. Not of you. Never of you. But of wha

Selene/Moon GoddessI have been called by many names. I have seen many lifetimes be born and others be destroyed. Some, I intervened, others, I allowed to run their course.Unlike many believe, I am not the one who determines the future. I can only see it, but most times, there's nothing I can do but give a nudge in the right direction.Yes, I am called a useless goddess because of it sometimes, but my creations have always been ignorant creatures. But as they do say, even if a monkey is ugly and stupid, it will still find love in the arms of its mother. My creations, although with a tendency to be very stubborn and ungrateful, are so dear to me that I can't help but watch over them whenever my window is full. I can't help but smile when they laugh at the most mundane things, or cry when something they love disappears. I see it all. I know it all. But in the end, I am only as powerful as they allow me to be.I rotated my orb, watching a particular set of people who had held my intere

Ashley “What are you doing?” I asked.“You did not just fight,” she said, her voice raw from shouting commands during battle. “You bore the burden of prophecy, and you carried us to survival. Without you, this war could not have been in our favour.”I swallowed, my throat tight. “I only did what was necessary, it's what any of us would have done if the roles were reversed.” I murmured, though the words felt small against the weight of what had just happened. “The safety of the tribe is over anything else.”A small smile tugged at the woman's lips, softening her usually sharp face. “Spoken like a true Lycan Queen.” She turned to Zane. “You made the right choice in the end.”“I never doubted it for one moment,” he replied, wrapping an arm abroad my waist and pulling me close with a roguishness that made me blush. Another voice followed, Sir Lazarus. He didn't look like he had fought much, because his clothes were still intact, somehow. His eyes, sharp and proud, softened as he looked

  • The Stand-In Luna   •Chapter 167•

Ashley The embers and sound of battle were no more. I almost expected something to crash or thud in the distance as I walked through the path leading to the grove. The smell of wet earth and new beginnings threatened to emerge, but I couldn't fully bask in it until I was sure Clara was okay. Seeing her body getting thrown off that hill did things to my mind that I could have never imagined. She had become like a sister to me, even though our first meeting hadn't exactly been a good one. It almost made me laugh when I remembered how she'd held a spear to my throat and planned how I was going to get executed for potentially being a threat to Zane. Her loyalty was unmatched. When I reached there, Bryce was beside her on the bed, in clean clothes. From the dampness of his hair, he likely just even had a bath since the last time I saw him. “I had to force him to go and get a bath,” said Alicia with a sad look in her eyes. Looking at her then, I was curious to know what he thought about

  • The Stand-In Luna   •Chapter 166•

Ashley There was a way to save him. She could call him back, tether his existence to her own, at a cost. “The physical may die, but out spirits extend beyond our physical bodies. I can still feel his wolf, struggling underneath it all. He's calling out to me, and it hurts to see him so broken, but I know I can solve this…”“How?”“I already told you. I'll bind us together with an eternal vow, Ashley. It's like a mating bond, but while a mating bond brings the physical together, this vow brings our spirits into one existence. We would be one.”I immediately understood the implications. “But that would mean—”“I would technically lose my presence in you to some degree. Since a shared spirit cannot be in two places at one. The unity will connect us, but…”“It's also very risky. I could lose you forever.” I looked down at my hands, covered in the dried blood belonging to Zane. I had promised that we would never be separated again, and I was telling the truth. I wasn't going to let him d

  • The Stand-In Luna   •Chapter 165•

Ashley My hands trembled as I pressed them against Zane’s chest. His skin, usually so warm, was ice beneath my palms. His heartbeat was silent, his body still. The battlefield, moments ago alive with the clash of steel and the roar of wolves, seemed to shrink away, leaving me kneeling in the dirt beside him.The smell of death hung in the air, so still and heavy that the weight almost crushed my lungs. In my head, no ideas emerged to show me the way to save Zane. I didn't know what to do, and my hands started to tremble from the sheer helplessness I felt. I couldn't lose him, but it had been so late.I could still see the image burned into my mind—Jace killing him by plunging that blade into his chest, the way the light left his eyes. His cry of agony as the blade pierced through his flesh and emerged from his back cleanly. His blood pouring out of his body was he fell to his knees, turning to me one last time before he fell into the dirt. All around me, the chaos no longer reigned.
