I sat at the side of my bed, and the soft glow from the bedside lamp cast long shadows across the room. My hands trembled as I grasped the envelope from next to me on my bedside table—divorce papers. The very presence of them knotted my stomach.

That experience stayed with me, raw and fresh, like a fresh wound. Liam's callous, matter-of-fact statement kept echoing in my mind.

"I'm done, Ava."

I took a quick breath, trying to shake off the weight of what had transpired. But it was impossible. How had it come to pass from being inseparable to now? How had the man who had held me like I was everything to him ended up someone who had no interest in me or our son?

I had a lump in my throat as I ran my fingers over the sealed envelope. Ever since he had left them in my hands, I had avoided looking at the papers, hoping against hope that by ignoring them, reality would be different. Now, however, part of me ached for answers—answers that I had been afraid to seek out before.

I took a nervous

There was a soft knock at the door, firm and insistent, and I knew it was Alexander even before I forced myself out from under the blankets. My body felt like it weighed a ton, and my heart weighed even heavier, but I forced myself to move. I lurched across the room, pausing for a split second with fingers poised on the doorknob before twisting it open.He stood there, dressed in a button-down and dark-washed jeans, his expression blank. His sharp eyes flicked over me, scanning my face before shifting past me into the dimly lit room."May I come in?" His voice was soft, carrying a quiet authority.I nodded and stepped aside, letting him in. He entered slowly, his gaze flicking around the room before settling back on me. Avoiding his eyes, I turned and sat on the edge of the bed, gripping my hands tightly in my lap.Silence stretched between us. I could feel his gaze on me, studying me. Then, after what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke."Ava, have you been crying?" His voice was

The door of Avas room clicked shut behind me as I left. I stood in the hall for a while lost in contemplation as I gazed at the shiny wood floor. Her brittle face and the way she had gazed at those divorce documents as though they contained the secret to her past were all replayed in my mind. Her goal was to recall. Her memory loss was something I had anticipated but witnessing it firsthand was unique. The atmosphere was eerie. The woman who had once exuded unquestionable confidence now appeared lost as though she didnt feel comfortable in her own skin. After slowly letting out my breath and running a hand through my hair I went to my room. I closed the door after entering and leaned against it for a moment before moving away. The bedside lamps warm glow cast long shadows throughout the dimly lit room. I approached the desk drew out the chair and took a seat staring at the laptop in front of me without saying anything. sinclair Ava. In the most surprising way she had entered my life a

The hospital smelled of quiet despair and antiseptic. Time stood still there and hope hovered like a ghost in the atmosphere never quite present but refusing to go. My chest never felt any lighter despite the fact that I had been here far too often.I passed nurses who hardly gave me a look as I moved down the hallway. By now they were familiar with me. The man who came to room 407 was always by himself and never spoke. When I got to the door I slowed my pace. Before pushing it open I paused for a brief second.Only the faint glow of the machines that kept her alive illuminated the dim interior of the room. The only sign that time was still passing was the heart monitors steady beeping. The white hospital sheets contrasted with Fionas pale skin as she lay there still. Like the last time I saw her her dark hair framed her face. The woman I had loved for so long was still gorgeous. However she wasnt present. Actually no. I moved closer after swallowing against the lump in my throat. I m

I held Fionas cold hand and wouldnt let go. Silent tears ran down my face pressing my forehead against our joined fingers. I had waited for a response that never materialized for countless nights here speaking into nothing. But the weight of it all was too much to bear tonight. I trembled as I whispered "I miss you." The silence in the room was too great. The monitors steady beep served as a harsh reminder that she was only just barely alive. Not in this place. Not really gone. I was startled back to the present by a loud knock on the door. Quickly wiping my face I pushed the sadness deep inside out of sight. As I straightened my jaw tensed training my features to resemble control. When the door opened a person who was familiar entered. Doctor. Cole Nathan. I had known him for years he was more than just a doctor. A companion. One of the few individuals who never turned away after witnessing my darkest moments. He was silent at first. simply watched me while maintaining a tightening

There was silence inside the mansion. Its too silent. My bare feet sank into the cool marble as I entered the hallway. The quiet was dense and engulfing pressing against my ears. Alexander was not present. The faint sound of his footsteps on the polished floors and the distant hum of his voice on the phone were signs that he was there. The air however was still tonight. by themselves. Something about the isolation made me uneasy but it also gave me courage. There was something substantial here but my world was empty and my memories were a hole I couldnt seem to fill. something genuine. I walked down the hallway after leaving my room my feet bare. I assumed that it was either very early in the morning or late at night but I had no idea what time it was.I needed to take a quick walk and perhaps relieve some of my boredom so I ignored the pain in my head. I took my time moving tracing the smooth walls with my fingertips. They were icy and my fingers found their smooth surface to be unf

With my heart hammering my ribs I turned abruptly. Alexanders dark unreadable face stood by the open doorway. His clenched jaw narrowed eyes and the way his hands curled into fists at his sides were all highlighted by the golden glow from the chandelier. He was like this for the first time."You didnt answer me" he said in a low menacing voice. "Whats your purpose here?" With my throat dry I swallowed. "I—I just—"The necklace on the floor caught his attention. His movements moved too quickly. He walked across the room knelt and picked up the dropped necklace in a matter of seconds. Holding it like a treasure his forearm muscles flexed as his fingers curled tightly around it. Or something that is prohibited."I didnt intend—" He yelled "You had no right" his voice cutting like a whip through the atmosphere.I recoiled. I felt regret twist inside of me. Not that I intended to pry. I didnt intend to touch something so sacred and intimate. With a whisper "Im sorry. I didnt think."He la

She was gone but the door remained open. I leaned against the cabinet and let out a sharp breath as fatigue sank into my bones. Now I felt as though the rooms silence was oppressive and pressing down on me like an intolerable weight. I closed my eyes and curled my fingers around the necklaces delicate chain feeling the cool metal bite into my palm.Oh fuck.I should not have screamed at her. I was consumed by the anger before I could control it because it had come so abruptly and with such violence. However I felt nothing but regret now that she was gone and my own voice was the only thing left resonating in my ears. I forced myself to breathe steadily and slowly while dragging a hand down my face. However the words I had hurled at her like daggers could not be undone by breathing. She loved that piece of jewelry the most. She didnt remove it at all. . I stood outside Ava’s door my hand hovering just inches from the wood. The only source of illumination in the dim hallway came from the antique wall sconces. The fast thud of my heart was accentuated by the oppressive silence that enveloped me. I couldnt tell how long I had been standing here but my fingers wouldnt move wouldnt shut the door and wouldnt knock. I should leave. I should turn around and go back to my room. But I couldn’t. She had been harmed by me. And that guilt clung to me like a second skin. I clenched my jaw and exhaled slowly trying to steady my nerves. Apologies had never come easy for me.Owning up to my mistakes had never been my strong suit. But tonight I had crossed a line I shouldn’t have. Tonight I had made Ava feel like an intruder in a house where she had no choice but to stay. With a sharp inhale I finally forced my knuckles against the door. A soft hesitant shuffle came from the other side. Then there was no sound. I waited to see if she would pay me an

While we were eating breakfast I couldnt resist observing Ava. She moved with ease and assurance as if she were at home in this situation. Everything about her smile and the delicate way she picked up her fork with her fingers felt so. . . natural. But my attention was captured by more than just her poise. It was the way she appeared to be completely present and unaffected by hesitation. Compared to the Ava I had known in the past she was different and I found it impossible to look away. I realized I had been staring too long.Forgotten a forkful of eggs hung halfway to my mouth. I was absorbed in my thoughts and totally engrossed in the silence until Avas little laugh jerked me out of it.With a lighthearted smile tugging at the corners of her lips she asked “Are you going to eat or just stare at your plate all morning?” I forced myself to refocus and blinked. Her laugh was warm and sincere and I couldnt help but smile as I shrugged and let out a little laugh. “I guess I became sid

I felt sad when I woke up.It was the kind of weight that came from the restless thoughts that had been bothering me all night not from the actual sleep. I had been tossing and turning unable to get rid of the worry that had been bothering me for days. Beyond what she was revealing there was a problem with Ava. The terror and the dreams seemed all too real. In an attempt to dispel the fog of the restless night I combed my hair as I got up and left my room. The morning light was still fading and having trouble peeping through the curtains in the dimly lit hallway. My intention was to go downstairs and get a coffee but I stopped myself before I could move. I'm not sure how it happened. One minute the gentle hum of the night was drowning out the world outside my window as I fell asleep. Then I found myself in a nightmare that was too heavy and real to get out of. Initially it began similarly to any other dream. Keep quiet. void. Then the emptiness soon gave way to something suffocating and darker. I stood by myself in the middle of a huge deserted field. Beneath my feet the black charred grass was twisted. There was nothing but the deafening silence that went on forever—no sound no life. Above me the sky had a peculiar gray tint as if a storm had been approaching but had never materialized. It felt like the wind was whispering to me but the words were lost in the distance. The wind was cold and sharp. I couldnt quite put my finger on why but I felt a chill go down my spine and a sense of unease grow. A problem. • The Stand In Wife's Revenge    The Weight of Silence

The familiar empty silence surrounded me like a smothering blanket as I entered the house. The walls seemed to be waiting for something that would never arrive and the air felt colder than usual. I didnt bother to switch on the lights. Even in the dark I was aware of where everything was.Previously a home, the house now felt like a prison. I walked straight to my room with a heavy heart and even heavier steps following. Stop taking detours dwelling on the past and feigning to check in on people or things. The day was longer than usual. I was beginning to feel as though I might crack under the pressure of everything that was weighing me down. After softly clicking the door shut behind me I stood there for a moment just breathing. The silence was so loud that I could hear my own breathing. Despite the darkness in the room I could feel my own fatigue bearing down on me. This type of fatigue was not merely physical rather it seeped into your bones and sank into your spirit. I was sick

I was immediately struck by the hospital rooms cold sterile air as soon as I entered and the faint background noise of the machines served as a continual reminder of how precarious the boundary between life and death is. I hesitated for a second before flipping the switch to envelop the room in the harsh artificial light as the lights flickered overhead. Everything seemed out of place and incorrect but there was no way to go back at this point. With every step I took toward the bed my heart sank. It was unbelievable to me to be back here. I looked at her as she lay still in that immaculate white bed her face lifeless and pale. She didnt look like the person I used to know—the one who would joke with me over coffee in our kitchen or teasingly reprimand me for being late for appointments. But now? Now she was nothing more than a shell. Although it is a lovely shell it is still empty. I no longer had the woman I once loved deeply present in the manner that I required. In order to avoid

The room is now quiet save for the faint hum of the fan in the corner as the designers have completed their work. Still in awe of the woman staring back at me I stood in front of the mirror. My reflection appeared both strange and familiar like a past incarnation of myself. The hair, makeup and dress all represented a metamorphosis that extended beyond ones outward looks. I felt more composed and in charge as though I were on the brink of a brand-new existence. I gave my reflection a final glance savoring the way the navy dress embraced my curves the delicate waves of my hair framing my face and the striking yet sophisticated makeup that accentuated features I hadnt recently given much thought to. I could identify with this version of myself—the strong self-assured woman who was once widely shared on social media and who people looked up to for her grace confidence and sense of style. But I felt a nagging pain. Even though I liked the way I looked I couldnt help but feel a strange

Standing there observing Ava I experienced an odd mix of confusion and admiration. Before my eyes she was changing every step she took every brushstroke every bodily movement was like the reveal of a new person. Although she had always been attractive she had changed.I found it difficult to look away from her. Her posture was tall and elegant and her once hesitant steps had transformed into confident flowing ones. Her entire self-perception had changed. I felt as though I had met a different woman a few days prior. Her energy and appearance both showed the change. Her natural beauty was accentuated by her bold yet delicate makeup. She had a certain edge and allure that I hadnt anticipated because of her soft pink lips and dark eyeliner. Her face was perfectly framed by her hair which was styled in waves that fell just below her shoulders softening the previously sharp features. She looked up from the mirror catching my eye and I appreciated her smile. A sense of self-assurance that

Following breakfast, I experienced a surge of fresh vitality. The burden of the previous few days was still very much present but something about today—what Alex had in store for me—made it seem like a new beginning. I had showered allowing the warm water to remove some of the emotional weight that was holding me back in addition to the physical filth from the past. Although I was unsure of what to anticipate I was prepared for whatever this new chapter held. The women were already in the bedroom quietly getting ready when I returned. Monica, Clara and Sophia all moved professionally coordinating their motions as if they had practiced this a thousand times. There was a sense of purpose anticipation and something else I couldnt quite put my finger on in the room. With his arms folded Alex watched me intently from the doorway. Although he had warm expectant eyes there was more going on. Although I was unable to solve it I felt both anxious and in control. As I entered Monica grinned a

I gazed at Alex my head still spinning from the mysterious words he had just uttered. He said “They’re here” and all I could think about was what they might be.The room was tense and I found myself holding my breath in anticipation of an explanation. Alex smiled one of those comforting but slightly too mysterious smiles for my taste before I could ask him any more questions. He straightened his shirt got up and strode to the door. My curiosity was greatly stoked and my heart began to beat a little quicker. Who was coming what was happening and why was Alex behaving so calmly? He arrived at the door and without hesitation swung it open.Three stunning women entered the room and I watched with my mind racing. They all had an instant presence. The first lady exuded confidence and elegance with her tall stature long dark hair and sharp features. With her blond hair pulled back into a stylish ponytail the second exuded a softer more approachable vibe. The third appeared as though she had
