Chapter 6

Author: Gilded Drifter
The rest of the album captured more personal, unguarded moments.

There was a photograph of their fingers intertwined at the movies, one of Amanda tucked into Eric’s arms during a skydiving trip, another of them barefoot and leaning against each other on the beach, and one of Amanda sitting behind him on his motorcycle with a helmet on and her arms wrapped around his waist.

What surprised me most was the sheer number of close-up selfies they had taken together.

Sometimes, Eric looked at the camera. Sometimes, he did not.

Most of the time, his expression remained unreadable, but every now and then, he smiled, especially when Amanda used one of those ridiculous filters that distorted both their faces.

There was also a candid photograph of Eric alone. He was sitting on a bench in the hallway outside Amanda’s laboratory, waiting for her to finish work.

Amanda must have called his name just as the photograph was taken. He had turned toward her with his gaze lifted beyond the camera. There was a tenderness in his smile that I had rarely seen before.

As I flipped through the photographs, I did not know what to think. If all of it had been nothing more than Eric gritting his teeth and playing along, then his performance had been almost frighteningly convincing.

For a long time afterward, I remained certain that Eric did not dislike Amanda. What he resented was not Amanda herself, but what she represented, which was another part of his life that Dad had chosen for him.

Eric opposed everything Dad supported and fiercely defended everything Dad opposed. They had always been determined to take opposite sides.

Amanda herself had never been the problem.

There was something else. When Amanda first married into the family, I took her shopping almost every day. She had taken a few weeks off after the wedding. We often spent the entire day out together.

She could analyze a virus using everything from case-control and cohort studies to retrospective and prospective research, producing a stack of reports thick enough to stun someone with.

Yet she could not tell an eyebrow pencil from an eyeliner pencil.

I bought her makeup and taught her how to apply it step by step, then took her shopping for clothes and shoes. Naturally, everything went on Eric’s credit card.

I even took her shopping for sleepwear. Whenever she first came to spend the night in my room, she had worn baggy cartoon-print pajamas that covered her from neck to ankle.

The first time I saw them, I hardly knew what to say.

I knew Eric’s taste in women. His previous girlfriends had certainly favored a very different style.

Unable to contain my curiosity, I asked, “Eric has never complained about those pajamas?”

Her entire face turned scarlet, all the way to her ears, but she shook her head without saying a word.

The fact that Eric had never complained was astonishing.

Still, I took her shopping for new sleepwear and found her something a little more flattering than her cartoon sets. I was too embarrassed to choose anything overly revealing.

Come on, the entire situation was mortifying for me too.

At the checkout, however, I could not resist adding one slightly more daring set. Amanda saw it and blushed even harder, but she did not object.

She just took my hand and asked softly, “Do you think he’ll like it?”

Whether Eric would like it, I had no idea. However, the way Amanda looked at that moment was enough to make me question my own sexuality.

Two days later, I was curled up on the living room sofa with an ice cream cone, binge-watching a show, when Eric came looking for me.

With a deep frown, he warned, “Don’t take Amanda to buy any more of that inappropriate nonsense. Stop being a bad influence on her.”

I was not exaggerating to say that I broke out in goosebumps. I had groaned at him.

“Give me a break, Eric. Since when are you such a prude?”

A faint smile crossed his face, but it vanished almost immediately. His expression turned serious, making it clear that he was not joking. “She’s just fine the way she is.”

Tsk. What a baffling man.

All right, the truth was that I adored Amanda. For a long time, I thought Eric had no idea how lucky he was to have married her.

A woman that wonderful ending up with a man like Eric seemed proof that the universe had no sense of justice.

That was not to say Eric was a bad person. He was a wonderful brother and an incredibly charismatic man.

However, he also had every flaw in the book. He had a terrible temper, was incapable of remaining faithful, and could be wildly unpredictable.

Women were constantly throwing themselves at him. He had never been particularly good at resisting temptation.

What made Amanda even more remarkable was that she seemed blind to all of those flaws. She devoted herself entirely to Eric and relied on him completely. She seemed to love him so deeply that even I was moved.

I kept thinking that Eric had struck gold. If he ever mistreated Amanda, I would be the first person to make him pay.

Ha. That little liar deserved an Oscar.

When we reached her apartment building, Amanda thanked me and picked up her luggage. Just as she was about to go inside, I finally called after her. “Why did you really marry Eric?”She turned back with a smile. “You probably won’t believe me, but I saw him once during my second year of graduate school. He was waiting for someone outside the student apartments.“I was reading on my balcony. A girl in the apartment next door called his name. He looked up and smiled.”That smile on a warm spring day somehow stayed with a young woman who had never fallen in love before. She carried it with her until the day she met him again at the dinner arranged by their families. Before leaving, Amanda looked at me with tears in her eyes and an apology in her expression. After hesitating, she finally said, “Emma, what if I told you... What if I told you that I only learned about my dad’s debts a few days before the rest of you did? Would you believe me?”I looked at her calmly and said, “That’s s

Then, he released her, turned around, and walked out. After that night, he hardly ever came home.I was afraid they might have another violent confrontation. I went upstairs and stopped outside their bedroom.Just as I reached for the door, I heard Amanda ask, “Do you want a divorce?”A year ago, after Eric had finished paying off the Jordan family’s debts, he had asked Amanda with a mocking smile, “The debt is paid. You’ve gotten everything you wanted from me.“Are you planning to leave now? If you want a divorce, I’ll be happy to oblige.” Amanda had looked directly at him and answered with quiet, deliberate conviction, “I will never ask you for a divorce, Eric.”Eric had paused for a second, then scoffed. “Of course. Your mother is still in the hospital.“Her dialysis and private care cost tens of thousands every month. You could never afford that on your own, could you?”I never forgot the way Amanda’s face had gone blank at his words, or the silent despair that filled her

She was such a fool. Her husband had spent the day buying another woman designer handbags. She was probably one step away from being thrown out of the family, yet there she was, happily playing with flour. I gave a cold scoff and ignored her. Amanda had grown accustomed to offering warmth and receiving nothing but coldness in return from our family.Even in the face of my hostility, she continued smiling at me. I turned and walked away.I did not come downstairs again until dinner. To my surprise, Eric was home. After spending the day shopping with Tiffany, I had assumed he would spend the night with her too.Amanda sat beside him, with my parents across the table. I walked over and took my seat.My parents spoke to Eric. I occasionally joined the conversation. Without ever acknowledging it, all of us treated Amanda as though she were invisible. It could not have been easy for her. I glanced sideways and saw the chandelier casting its light across her face. Her eyes remained low

I had teased her at that time. I said someone as sheltered and well brought up as her could hardly have done anything truly terrible. Then, two weeks later, Dad stormed into the house carrying a thick file and ordered everyone into his study. He had something important to discuss. The argument that followed was the first sign that our family was beginning to come apart. The file contained dozens of promissory notes. The total was substantial without being catastrophic for a family like ours. They documented Mr. Jordan’s gambling debts, which had grown to nearly ten million dollars after years of interest and penalties.Every major asset owned by the Jordan family had been pledged as collateral for loans Mr. Jordan had taken out to cover his gambling losses. When Amanda married Eric, those encumbered assets had been transferred to them jointly as part of the marriage settlement. No one had conducted proper due diligence before Amanda and Eric signed the transfer papers. Mr. J

Before their relationship fell apart, Eric and Amanda had enjoyed a peaceful and mutually respectful marriage. Eric had actually been quite protective of her.On the first morning after their wedding, Amanda came down a little late for breakfast. I sat at the table and started teasing her. She blushed from her face all the way to the tips of her ears at my remarks. She had stopped at the foot of the spiral staircase and was too embarrassed to come any closer. All the while, she looked at us with shy uncertainty.Eric kicked me hard under the table, then got up and walked over to her. He held out his hand as though it were the most natural thing in the world, calmly led her to the table, and helped her into her seat. Then, he turned to her and asked, “What would you like? Pancakes or eggs?”They looked just like any other blissfully happy newlywed couple.Back then, whenever I went downstairs late at night in search of a snack, I often found Amanda in the living room.
