Chapter 1

I hesitantly stood at the door of the private room. The piece of paper in my hand was crumpled and wrinkled.

The bar was bustling with noise, and I didn't dare take another step forward.

Luke hadn't been home for an entire month.

Suddenly, the door swung open and a man stepped out with his phone. He looked at me in surprise. "Wendy? What brings you here?"

His voice was loud enough for everyone inside to hear. In an instant, all eyes were on me.

In the center of the room, Luke was seated on a couch and had his hand casually resting on a woman's waist. My heart ached like it had been stabbed with a needle.

"Come over," he coldly ordered.

I found it hard to breathe and clutched the paper even tighter.

"Wendy's here. Come on, have a seat." The sharp-eyed person beside him made space for me, but I didn't budge. Instead, I held the paper out toward him. "Sign it. I'm in a hurry."

For a moment, the entire room fell silent. Perhaps they hadn't expected me to be so firm—after all, I was a pathetic loser that had clung onto Luke like a parasite.

With a snort, Luke set his glass down. "If you're here to ask for money, at least act like it." He glanced at the paper in my hand. "What illness did you make up at the hospital this time?"

The color drained from my face, and I trembled slightly.

Indeed, I had gone to the hospital back then, but I hadn't faked anything. The truth was that my condition had worsened, and I was dying soon.

Luke snatched the paper from my hand, and his expression went cold the moment he saw what it was. He slammed the paper on the table as his eyes blazed with fury. "Wendy Yaeger, are you asking for a divorce? Is this what you were 'in a hurry' for?"

I nodded. "Sign it. You don't love me, and I don't love you either. I don't want to be tied to you for life."

As soon as I finished speaking, the sound of sharp inhales filled the room. Even the air seemed to grow colder by the second.

Luke gritted his teeth."Sure. I'll sign it if you finish this bottle of wine."

My lips went pale as I looked at him. Then, one of his lap dogs beside him quickly poured a glass for me.

I had liver cancer, and I couldn't drink. He basically wanted me dead.

"I… I'm not feeling well…" I said.

"What now? Changed your mind?

"Wendy, stop playing games. If you want something, just say it. Don't pull schemes to threaten me like this. You'll only disgust me," Luke exclaimed.

I felt like someone had ripped a piece of my heart out, and the pain made my entire body tremble.

Quickly, I grabbed a bottle of wine from the desk and downed it. Like flames, the alcohol burned its way from my throat to my stomach, igniting my failing organs.

As I put the empty bottle back down, Luke stared at me and suddenly chuckled. "Turns out you can drink. That makes sense—after so many years overseas, who knows how many people you've toasted? One bottle must be nothing to you now."

I coughed a few times, trying to suppress my churning stomach. "Just sign it. I'll move out after you've signed it."

Yet, Luke only grinned wider. "How is one bottle enough?" He patted the woman beside him. "Go get more and open them all."

So, I ended up chugging one bottle after another.

I didn't even remember when I'd lost consciousness. When the pain in my stomach woke me up, I got up from the floor and stumbled toward the restroom.

I threw up until the world spun. Then, I washed my face, propped myself up, and looked at my reflection in the mirror.

I seemed dishevelled, and my skin was unusually yellow.

I lowered my head and bitterly laughed. God still wasn't ready to let me go just yet.

With how pathetic I looked now, I might as well have died overseas back then.

"Are you okay, Wendy?" Someone handed me a tissue.

I looked back into the room, but it was empty. Meanwhile, the divorce agreement lay on the table, completely soaked in wine. Luke's signature was nowhere to be found.

I frowned. "Where's Luke?"

"He left because Ms. Kingston had a fever…"

So, he'd left. The man who'd used to panic over a scratch on my hand now couldn't care less that I'd passed out.

Instead, he was now particularly attentive to Cassidy Kingston, his new mistress. She looked a lot like me—of course, not the person I was now, but who I had been in high school.

I wiped the stains off my clothes with the tissue and staggered out of the room. With every step I took, my body ached, and so did my heart.

Back when I had left the country, Luke had cried his heart out, saying, "If you go, don't ever come back!"

Yet, I didn't listen.

Now that I was back, this was the ending I got.

Luke's POVAfter Wendy died, it felt like my heart had been ripped out. I hated myself for not noticing what had been wrong with her back then. I had loathed her for abandoning me, and now, I resented her for leaving me just like that. She didn't even leave me anything to remember her by.The only thing left of our home were the walls. But after quite some effort, I finally found the renovators. I spent a huge sum to buy back all the furniture and have repairs done. I even had the same people come back to redo the walls and floors. Yet, it still felt wrong—everything seemed out of place. One day, I woke up in the middle of the night. I broke down, unable to control myself as I bawled my eyes out. This villa just felt too empty. It was so empty that my heart palpitated at the thought of it.Liver cancer must have been so painful. My Wendy must have been terrified. The years she'd spent abroad treating it must've been so difficult for her, but at least there still had been ho

The weather was nice that day, and the sunlight made the ward look particularly cozy. I wanted to go for a walk, but I didn't have the strength to sit up. So, Sasha had to help me with it."Are you thirsty? I'll go get you some water." She offered. After Sasha left, I sat there, blankly staring out the window. If things had gone smoothly back then, I would have already reunited with Mom and Dad. I wouldn't have had to see Luke's face again.Due to our marriage, Luke had more authority than Sasha in making medical decisions for me. Yet, despite all the medication I'd taken over the past few days, I didn't get the chance to live longer.Luke had gone to great lengths to bring in various specialists, but even they had shaken their heads at my condition. Then, as if he had gone mad, Luke desperately sought out organ donors. He wanted to replace every organ in my body that had cancer.Yet, he had forgotten that I had Rh-negative blood. It was already difficult for ordinary patient

When I opened my eyes again, the person crying beside my bed wasn't Sasha anymore. For the first time since returning to the country, I saw Luke shed tears. The last time he did was when I'd left him to go abroad. He had hurled cruel words at me while crying. He'd said, "Wendy Yaeger, if you leave, don't you ever come back!"Now, his eyes were bloodshot from crying. As he choked with sobs, he tightly clutched my hand and said, "Wendy, can you tell me none of this is real, please?"I forced a sarcastic smile as I pulled my hand back. "What do you think?"Unable to hold it back anymore, he started crying uncontrollably. "Wendy, you can't die. I won't allow that!"I closed my eyes. "You can't control me."Just then, Sasha forcefully shoved him away, crying as she chided, "Luke Chester, where were you earlier? Why are you only here for her now? "You ungrateful bastard—Wendy's devotion to you went to waste! Why did you do this to her, you heartless scumbag? You don't deserve to trea

After making the call, the renovators arrived in no time. I had them pack up all of Luke's belongings and send them to the house he shared with Cassidy. Then, I let out a heavy breath and said, "Destroy everything for me!""Well…" The renovators were reluctant to ruin such an exquisitely decorated place.I placed my card on the table. "Do it! Whoever does it the fastest gets a thousand dollars."With that, the room was filled with the sound of smashing and crashing."Help me deal with these items too. Take it if it's useful, and throw it away if it's useless. I'll pay another five thousand for it. Disassemble the bed in the bedroom and bring it to the junkyard."Over the years, Luke had never given me his love, but he sure gave me plenty of money, bags, and jewelry. While I was hospitalized, I sold them all on secondhand platforms. Now, with my wallet stuffed full, I could speak even more boldly.Even if I had to leave, I would take my marital home with me! I would leave Luke

Just then, a gust of wind blew by, and I shivered. As it was getting windy, I planned to head back. However, when I turned around, I found Luke standing behind me.I jumped in surprise and cautiously glared at him, afraid that he had heard what I'd just said.Frowning, he icily demanded, "Haven't you stayed in the hospital long enough?"I didn't want to talk to him. However, just as I turned to leave, he suddenly grabbed my arm. As he did so, he shuddered—probably because I had become skin and bones. His expression abruptly shifted and grew stern. "Wendy, why have you lost so much weight? Are you actually sick?"My chest tightened. I didn't want Luke to know about my illness. I was afraid of seeing what expression he'd make if he ever found out. I feared that he would be indifferent and casually say that I deserved it. That would hurt more than chemotherapy, and I wouldn't be able to bear it.I forced a smile. "Impossible. I'm perfectly healthy. I just wanted your attention

Sasha cried in my arms for a long time. My heart ached as I gently patted her shoulder. "Don't cry, Sasha. I didn't expect to drag you into this. I'm sorry, I was too lonely and scared.""Nonsense!" Sasha wiped her tears. "You should've told me a long time ago. My dear Wendy, just how much have you suffered?" She encircled my wrist with her fingers and said, "Look at how thin you've become. Would Luke even have noticed if you didn't tell him?"I shook my head. If Luke had cared—even just a little—he would have realized that I wasn't faking my illness. He never noticed the medicine on my nightstand, the medical records I never hid, my rapidly thinning body, nor my hair that came out in clumps. He never truly listened to a single word I said."What a scumbag! I even used to think he was perfect at everything. I must've been blind!" Sasha hissed.I patted her hand to comfort her. Smiling, I opened the drawer and handed her some documents. She burst into tears again. "Wendy, are yo

Sasha sat beside me and tightly gripped my hand. Her eyes were completely reddened after hearing everything. She choked up and said, "Why didn't you tell me anything? You've suffered so much, Wendy. Does Luke know about all this?"I shook my head."Didn't you two get married a long time ago? Has he been mistreating you?" she cautiously asked.I forced a smile. "He hates me.""Of course he would if you never explained anything. What you said that day was brutal—I was devastated, and he'd almost jumped off a building. You should have a good talk with him…"I shook my head again. My eyes were already filled with tears, and my throat was so hoarse I could barely speak. "He's fallen in love with someone else. He doesn't love me anymore."Sasha froze. Then, she hurried to wipe my tears. "What a playboy. We don't need a scumbag like him. Please don't cry, Wendy."When I had just returned to the country, Luke had come to me and said he wanted to marry me. I genuinely thought that he lov

Luke choked up slightly. He coldly scrutinized me from head to toe before letting out a chuckle. "Wendy, have you gotten addicted to faking your illness? Was he the one helping you forge your records? "Quit messing around. I don't have time for your performances. You're not convincing at all. Who would check into the hospital with dyed hair and a pink cat-ear hat?"He seemed convinced that I was just putting on an act to make Cassidy jealous. His smug smile was full of certainty as he warned, saying, "Don't use something as low as a divorce to get my attention. You're in no position to negotiate with me."Matt's face flushed. He was about to speak up when I quickly intervened, saying, "Exactly. I'm faking it!"Luke nodded in satisfaction. Then, he walked off with his arm wrapped around Cassidy. "Enough with the drama and go home. I'll get you a gift for our anniversary."Baffled, Matt looked at me. "That was Luke? I'm not seeing things, right? Why did he treat you like that?" B

I ended up donating around 17 ounces of blood. My head spun so badly I couldn't even stand.Luke coldly stared at me. "Cut the act. Is this another trick for more money?" He flung a bank card at me, which hit my chest lightly before falling to the ground. My eyes welled up. Even at my worst, I had never humiliated him like this. I glared daggers at him as tears slid down my cheeks. There was a flicker of regret in his expression. Hurriedly, he snapped, "I'll deal with you after I get home!"I looked down at the card on the floor and realized how stupid I had been to come all the way here. Luke didn't deserve my concern at all.I wiped my tears, stepped over the card, and walked away. After that, his assistant picked the card up and handed it back to him.Behind me, I heard him say, "You're only doing all this to get my attention. Since you donated Cassie your blood, I'll come home for our anniversary."Just as I stepped out of the hospital, the dizziness hit me again. Fortunat
