“Be ready by 7. We are having dinner at my parents’”

I stopped the toast I was about to eat mid-air and turned to face Aaron.

He stood a few feet away, dressed in a white shirt tucked into blue well-fitted pants that hugged his frame in perfection and crisp black shoes.

He had both hands in his pocket in a casual stance that still had an air of authority. I mean for a jerk, he sure looks good. And dare I say, delicious.

His expression was unreadable as always.

“What?” I asked again to get the message properly.

“I said be ready at 7. My parents are hosting us for dinner” Then he turned to leave.

I had some things to get off my chest.

“What was that last night?” I asked stopping him mid-track.

I was referring to the whole Vivienne issue that had happened last night.

He turned to me, he looked impatient “What was what?”

“I’m talking about Vivienne”

“And what about her?” He looked at me with annoyance.

If arrogance was a person, it would be none other than Aaron Vanderbilt

When I woke up this morning, I told myself that when confronting him I was going to be as calm as possible but clear with my message. I was anything but a drama queen so I did not like to associate myself with drama in any way.

“Listen, Aaron,” I said very calmly as I rose gently from my seat “I get the conditions of this marriage, believe me, I knew what I was getting into before I agreed to this fake…marriage”

I added with a tinge of disgust.

I continued “However, no matter what, bringing in your bitch… I mean girlfriend and sleeping with her in the same house I live in, that’s borderline disrespectful”

He cocked a brow. He looked so unapologetic.

“How will you feel if I bring in a guy here and have sex with him?” I asked.

“This is my house. Not yours” he replied curtly.

And just like that, I was reminded of my stance. I mentally palmed myself for thinking I could get through to him.

“For as long as we are married, this is my home”

“Don’t delude yourself Elizabeth. You really don’t mean much around here. You don’t get me to tell me what to do, who to bring, and how I get around things in my house” he said. His voice was stern.

“I’m not in any way trying to do that. I’m just asking for basic respect!” I said exasperatedly. I was already regretting bringing this up.

He continued speaking in a firm tone “You’re to remain a silent occupant and practically be invisible. You’re not allowed to speak to my guest, especially not Vivienne in the way you spoke to her last night…”

“I didn’t do anything wrong!” I interrupted him in a shrill voice “Were you deaf? Did you not hear how she spoke to me?”

He cut me off “I don’t appreciate you loitering around unnecessarily. Also, I don’t want you having breakfast or any other meal in my dining anymore. Have any of the staff bring up anything you need to your room”

I blinked “Are you restricting me to my room right now?”

This was unbelievable.

“Yes, I am. It’s been less than 24 hours and you’re already going around causing trouble with my guest and attempting to tell me what to do, I wonder who you think you actually are right now”

One thing I noticed about Aaron was that he didn’t need to raise his voice to pass his message, his low voice was filled with authority and stern. One that will have you spellbound and rooted to the floor.

Because explain to me why I stood where I was, unable to say a word about this utter rubbish he was sprouting from his ugly mouth.

Okay fine, maybe not ugly. But annoying. There was really nothing ugly about this man.

“Be ready by 7” he said again and walked out briskly.

I, Elizabeth Knight, had never been one to be spoken to anyhow. I was no pushover and I always fought for myself. But I felt this man had me in a cage somewhat, sometimes I could barely find the right words to say to him. This was insane.

Binding me to my room? I wasn’t allowed to loiter around? Me? What was I? Trash? Was that really what he took me for?

Such an arrogant bastard.

My things arrived at the mansion later in the day. I was sure my mum couldn’t wait to have sent them out of the house. She was probably overjoyed that I was out of her hair now.

I took a shower and changed into a new pair of clothes.

Taylor had texted me to ask if I was okay. Such a sweet girl. I wanted to tell her about all the kinds of stuff that had taken place in less than 24 hours I had been married but I held back. I didn’t want her pity or worry.

My dad had texted as well “How are you Elizabeth? Let me know if you need anything. I love you” It had simply read.

I didn’t respond. I wasn’t mad at him. But I don’t think I was in a clear-headed space to speak to him, or anyone as a matter of fact. I needed time to figure out things. And how to continue with my life and also what to do. Surely I wasn’t going to be a stay-at-home wife. Was I even allowed to travel at will? I wondered.

Anyway, Aaron didn’t want me around the house. My absence won’t be noticed.

Heather had brought my lunch up to my room. I hadn’t told her to. She wasn’t present when Aaron had “banned” me from eating downstairs either.

So I asked her “Did Aaron tell you to always bring my food upstairs?”

She shifted uncomfortably before nodding.

I sighed “You may go,” I said.

She left.

This was even more serious than I thought. I wondered if I was soon going to be locked up in my room like a prisoner.

Vivienne strutted in with a heavy box in her hand and a bouquet. She struggled with it before she placed it on the center table.“I'm not here for you,” she said snarkily.“Obviously,” I said walking towards her. “Neither is there anyone in this house that you can possibly be here for. So I suggest you get out now”She rolled her eyes putting her hand on her hip. “Girl relax, I'm not here for you, I'm here for Aaron. I brought gifts for his birthday so you'd better calm your aggressive nerves”I looked at the box she had placed on the glass table, it had a transparent lid and I could see a cake with the inscription “happy birthday baby” written on top. Then there was a warped box with a ribbon and then the bouquet.I looked back at her. “Take your shit and get out”“You have no right to tell me to get out. Last time I checked, this isn’t your house”“This is my husband’s house!”“Get the fuck out of my face. I have no business with you” she looked behind me and smiled, I turned around

  • The Stranger I Met On The Altar   Chapter 105

ELIZABETH’S POVThe silence that ensued after our last argument lasted for weeks. For weeks we completely avoided each other’s paths. Aaron and I moved around the mansion like strangers. Polite, distant, and careful. For the first week, whenever we crossed paths we’d brush past each other without as much as sparing a glance at each other. But from the second week, there were slight nods of acknowledgment and mumbled hellos when we met sometimes.I was angry. Hurt. Disappointed in him even.Disappointed that in the first hurdle we are experiencing as a married couple, the first thing he could think of was a divorce. So what if our families were messed up, what did that have to do with both of us?Anyway, that was by the way. I had thought about that question repeatedly and didn’t want to do more thinking.I barely left the house these days because there was pretty much nothing to do.My phone rang and I smiled at the caller ID.Noah.It was as if he knew I was going through a difficult

ALEXIS POVThe fourteen-day ultimatum I gave Charles came and gone without his message. He made it a duty to ignore my calls and messages and simply refuse any attempt I made to see him. This man was joking with me. He didn't know what he was messing with.I had nothing to lose, I had already lost my home, and my child, and I had been living in hiding because Bruce was out there looking for me and asking almost everyone I knew about my whereabouts. And I didn’t want to see him, at least not yet.As I paced around the room angrily, thinking of Charles and his unwarranted attitude towards me, my goal changed. If he doesn’t want me anymore, I would ruin him.I meant it when I said I’d destroy everything he owns and everything he holds dear, I wasn’t joking.Even if it was the last thing I did, I was prepared to take him down.I wanted to send a message to him, a deadly message but first things first, I needed to confirm something. So I picked up my phone and dialled a number.“Vivienne”

  • The Stranger I Met On The Altar   Chapter 103

“I didn't peg you for a childish ball-less coward Charles. I guess you're not high and mighty after all” I said with a dry laugh after Joyce left.“You might want to keep your voice down, Alexis”“I don't care if you're in love with a hundred women in Manhattan. You're mine. And that's final. Whether you're crazily in love with your wife or you give her a thousand kisses in front of me, I really couldn’t care less. You owe me a debt Charles and I’ve come to collect it” I said as I walked further into the study, “And don’t you dare tell me to keep my voice down. You don’t get to tell me what and what not to do anymore. If I want to shout and let the world know you belong to me, then I would. There would be no stopping me. So try as much as possible not to piss me off. And that includes the stupid childish stunt you just pulled right now. For your own good, that must never happen again” I warned. He let out a tired sigh as he swiped his palm across his face. “What do you want Alexis?

  • The Stranger I Met On The Altar   Chapter 102

ELIZABETH’S POV“I just don't think we should be together anymore” were Aaron’s words in response to my outburst. He just stood there, staring at me casually, like he hadn't just dropped a bomb on me.“W-what?” My voice came out lower than I had hoped it would.“This whole thing is messy. It's not something we can just come back from. Our families would never be united again”I blinked. “Are you crazy? Did you smoke something strong?”“What do you think is going to happen now Elizabeth?” he looked at me. “Do you really think your father is going to let all of this go?”He waited for me to answer. I didn't. Because I knew the answer to that. “Do you really think one big apology is going to solve all of this and Bruce forgives your mother and my mother forgives my father and then everyone is back to being a happy family and our marriage continues so peacefully? You think so?” he asked.I swallowed. No, I didn't think so. I didn't think it'd be easy. This was war. My mother wasn't backi

“Go on, deny it. I dare you” she said, looking at me, angrily.I took a deep breath. “I don't know what you heard, but it's not what you think, trust me”“Trust you?” she scoffed. More tears flowed from her eyes, and she didn't bother wiping them off. “I should trust you? You want to tell me you didn't meet up with Vivienne?”“I didn't exactly meet up with her. She came to the office yesterday, unannounced. And she was there today as well, but I sent her away”“You sent her away today or yesterday?”“I sent her away today”“And yesterday?”I shifted slightly, not because I felt cornered but because I didn’t know how to explain this without her misunderstanding.I took in a deep breath before I started. “She came to the office yesterday, unannounced as I mentioned earlier, but I was about to step out of the office and she didn’t come with her car, so I had to drop her off on my way there. That was all”She stared at me blankly for a few seconds. And in my heart of hearts, I prayed she
