ログインI woke up to a loud knock on my door.
I didn’t even know when I had dozed off.
The sharp knock came again.
I got up slowly and opened the door.
Aaron stood there, dressed in a tux, different from what I had seen him in the morning.
His eyes scanned me from head to toe, and then he looked angry “You aren’t dressed?!”
“Dressed for…?” I was about to ask when it dawned on me. Shit! Dinner at his parents. I had completely forgotten with the way I had dozed off.
“I’m sorry. I forgot. But give me a few minutes I’ll be ready soon” I said hastily.
He looked so angry “I specifically told you twice this morning. Elizabeth, with every minute that passes, you give me reasons to dislike you even more”
I dislike you even much more, I screamed in my head. But the words couldn’t get out of my mouth.
“I’ll leave in fifteen minutes, with or without you,” he said angrily and left. He looked so irritated.
A part of me wondered why he was that way with me. He didn’t even know me well, but it seemed like he had this immense hatred for me from the onset. I disliked him too, correct, but for me, it wasn’t that deep.

I had shocked even myself with how fast I had gotten ready. I had never been ready so fast my entire life.
I had quickly whipped up a simple red dress from my recently arranged closet and grabbed the first heel I could reach without minding the color. My hair still had some styling from my wedding the previous day so I didn’t need to do much. I was so in a hurry that I completely forgot the jewelry.
The car ride to his parents was icy and the silence was very uncomfortable.
Aaron had been waiting in the car when I got in and he had not even spared me a single glance.
He was on the phone all through typing away. I wondered if he was texting his girlfriend.
That reminded me, that I had not seen Vivienne with him in the morning, had she left earlier or she was still in the house? With how big the house was, she could still be in there and I wouldn’t notice. I didn’t care though. Whatever.
We arrived at his parents’ place which was two times bigger than his. I had grown up in money but the Vanderbilts took wealth to a whole new level. These people were freaking billionaires.
I noticed a familiar car in the garage. Were my parents here?
My question was answered when we walked in and I saw my parents and his sitting together sharing a laugh. I didn’t know my parents were going to be here.
“You guys are finally here,” his mother said excitedly walking up to me and engulfing me in a bone-crushing hug “Elizabeth darling, you look so good”
She looked very excited to see me.
“Hi ma’am” I greeted. I didn’t know how to address her.
“Call me Joyce dear. With time you’d get comfortable enough to call me mum” she laughed.
I watched Aaron greet his mother with a kiss to both her cheeks and then we exchanged our hellos.
I didn’t miss the look of disapproval from my mother, as usual. I probably didn’t dress enough to her taste.
We proceeded to the dining and had dinner. There had been small talks here and there but I had stayed quiet all through, not knowing what to say really.
“Elizabeth,” Charles Vanderbilt called “how does it feel being married to my son?” He asked.
Horrible, I wanted to say.
I managed a smile “Good sir” I simply said.
“Is he treating you right?” Joyce asked.
I already knew the answer to that but I didn’t want to say so I just smiled
Charles’ phone ringing at the moment saved me. He excused himself to go take the call.
“I’m sorry we couldn’t get to meet sooner. Everything happened so fast. But you’re welcome to the family and this is your second home now, you can come here anytime” Joyce said.
She was such a sweet woman. I liked her already.
“Ouch!” My mother gasped. We all turned in her direction. She had accidentally slipped wine on her dress.
My mother? Make a mistake? I almost chuckled, she wasn’t such a perfectionist after all.
Joyce stood up immediately and offered her a napkin “Oh sorry Alexis. How did it happen?”
My mother took the napkin and tried dabbing at the stain.
“My hand must have shaken. So clumsy of me” she said shaking her head “I think I need to use the restroom”
“Okay let me take you” Joyce offered.
Mum smiled “That’s so sweet of you Joyce but don’t stress yourself, just tell me how to get there I’ll be fine”
Joyce pointed her in a direction and she left.
My dad turned to me and kept looking as if trying to get my attention but I refused to meet his eyes. I had been ignoring him all through.
My stomach grumbled all of a sudden. I winced in pain.
“Are you okay Elizabeth?” My dad had asked, his voice masked in concern.
I quickly nodded “I think I need to use the restroom”
I felt Aaron’s gaze on me.
“Are you okay sweetie? Is the food not nice?” Joyce asked looking concerned.
“No I’m okay,” I said standing up “Excuse me please,” I said and quickly followed the direction my mum had taken.
I dreaded meeting her there and having to listen to her boring lecture. Normally I would have waited for her to get out but I urgently needed to use the loo.
I made up my mind to zone out totally as she went about with her lecture so I wouldn’t have to hear something that would piss me off.
I made a turn to the hallway and I was almost confused as to which particular one was the guest restroom. I decided to try the first door.
As I got closer I noticed the door was slightly opened. And I could hear hushed tones. I peeped and saw my mum with Charles. They were talking in hush tones.
What was this about?
I leaned closer to hear what they were saying.
“You betrayed me, Charles. You lied to me” my mum said.
“Alexis I did not. This is not the right time. I have everything under control. Believe me, everything will go according to plan” Charles said.
I was even more confused now.
Plan? What plan?
Vivienne strutted in with a heavy box in her hand and a bouquet. She struggled with it before she placed it on the center table.“I'm not here for you,” she said snarkily.“Obviously,” I said walking towards her. “Neither is there anyone in this house that you can possibly be here for. So I suggest you get out now”She rolled her eyes putting her hand on her hip. “Girl relax, I'm not here for you, I'm here for Aaron. I brought gifts for his birthday so you'd better calm your aggressive nerves”I looked at the box she had placed on the glass table, it had a transparent lid and I could see a cake with the inscription “happy birthday baby” written on top. Then there was a warped box with a ribbon and then the bouquet.I looked back at her. “Take your shit and get out”“You have no right to tell me to get out. Last time I checked, this isn’t your house”“This is my husband’s house!”“Get the fuck out of my face. I have no business with you” she looked behind me and smiled, I turned around
ELIZABETH’S POVThe silence that ensued after our last argument lasted for weeks. For weeks we completely avoided each other’s paths. Aaron and I moved around the mansion like strangers. Polite, distant, and careful. For the first week, whenever we crossed paths we’d brush past each other without as much as sparing a glance at each other. But from the second week, there were slight nods of acknowledgment and mumbled hellos when we met sometimes.I was angry. Hurt. Disappointed in him even.Disappointed that in the first hurdle we are experiencing as a married couple, the first thing he could think of was a divorce. So what if our families were messed up, what did that have to do with both of us?Anyway, that was by the way. I had thought about that question repeatedly and didn’t want to do more thinking.I barely left the house these days because there was pretty much nothing to do.My phone rang and I smiled at the caller ID.Noah.It was as if he knew I was going through a difficult
ALEXIS POVThe fourteen-day ultimatum I gave Charles came and gone without his message. He made it a duty to ignore my calls and messages and simply refuse any attempt I made to see him. This man was joking with me. He didn't know what he was messing with.I had nothing to lose, I had already lost my home, and my child, and I had been living in hiding because Bruce was out there looking for me and asking almost everyone I knew about my whereabouts. And I didn’t want to see him, at least not yet.As I paced around the room angrily, thinking of Charles and his unwarranted attitude towards me, my goal changed. If he doesn’t want me anymore, I would ruin him.I meant it when I said I’d destroy everything he owns and everything he holds dear, I wasn’t joking.Even if it was the last thing I did, I was prepared to take him down.I wanted to send a message to him, a deadly message but first things first, I needed to confirm something. So I picked up my phone and dialled a number.“Vivienne”
“I didn't peg you for a childish ball-less coward Charles. I guess you're not high and mighty after all” I said with a dry laugh after Joyce left.“You might want to keep your voice down, Alexis”“I don't care if you're in love with a hundred women in Manhattan. You're mine. And that's final. Whether you're crazily in love with your wife or you give her a thousand kisses in front of me, I really couldn’t care less. You owe me a debt Charles and I’ve come to collect it” I said as I walked further into the study, “And don’t you dare tell me to keep my voice down. You don’t get to tell me what and what not to do anymore. If I want to shout and let the world know you belong to me, then I would. There would be no stopping me. So try as much as possible not to piss me off. And that includes the stupid childish stunt you just pulled right now. For your own good, that must never happen again” I warned. He let out a tired sigh as he swiped his palm across his face. “What do you want Alexis?
ELIZABETH’S POV“I just don't think we should be together anymore” were Aaron’s words in response to my outburst. He just stood there, staring at me casually, like he hadn't just dropped a bomb on me.“W-what?” My voice came out lower than I had hoped it would.“This whole thing is messy. It's not something we can just come back from. Our families would never be united again”I blinked. “Are you crazy? Did you smoke something strong?”“What do you think is going to happen now Elizabeth?” he looked at me. “Do you really think your father is going to let all of this go?”He waited for me to answer. I didn't. Because I knew the answer to that. “Do you really think one big apology is going to solve all of this and Bruce forgives your mother and my mother forgives my father and then everyone is back to being a happy family and our marriage continues so peacefully? You think so?” he asked.I swallowed. No, I didn't think so. I didn't think it'd be easy. This was war. My mother wasn't backi
“Go on, deny it. I dare you” she said, looking at me, angrily.I took a deep breath. “I don't know what you heard, but it's not what you think, trust me”“Trust you?” she scoffed. More tears flowed from her eyes, and she didn't bother wiping them off. “I should trust you? You want to tell me you didn't meet up with Vivienne?”“I didn't exactly meet up with her. She came to the office yesterday, unannounced. And she was there today as well, but I sent her away”“You sent her away today or yesterday?”“I sent her away today”“And yesterday?”I shifted slightly, not because I felt cornered but because I didn’t know how to explain this without her misunderstanding.I took in a deep breath before I started. “She came to the office yesterday, unannounced as I mentioned earlier, but I was about to step out of the office and she didn’t come with her car, so I had to drop her off on my way there. That was all”She stared at me blankly for a few seconds. And in my heart of hearts, I prayed she
