Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Nora Blythe
After Irene was done throwing a fit, she dismissed the caregivers.

As she walked out, she glanced at me and said, “Since you think you’re so capable, you can fend for yourself from now on.

“I hope you don’t come crawling to Peter for help.”

With no one to look after me, I could not do much.

I had to crawl into my wheelchair by myself when getting out of bed. I even slipped while taking a shower.

Three days later, I fell in the washroom and broke my arm.

When I was taken to the hospital, they needed a family member to sign the consent form for the surgery.

Only then did Irene rush over.

Perhaps when she saw how pale my face was, she realized what she had done and guilt consumed her.

She said apologetically, “I was just so angry last time. I’m sorry, honey. I was—”

“It’s fine.” I cut her off.

Whatever explanation she had prepared died in her throat.

She looked at me in confusion, as if she had not expected me to be so calm.

When I brought up divorce, she thought I was being unreasonable.

When I pushed Peter down, she thought I was jealous.

Perhaps she assumed that this time, I would make a scene just like before.

“You’ve finally come around?” she asked cautiously.

I nodded and said casually, “You’ve done more than enough for me all these years. You’re right. I can’t hold you back just because I saved your life.”

Over the past few days, I had come to fully understand the truth about my situation and her true feelings.

We had been together for more than twenty years. But the five years I spent in a coma were enough to ruin everything.

Irene was not happy. She felt conflicted.

She said quietly, “Frederick, don’t be like this.”

During my days in the hospital, she stayed by my side at all times.

She took on the role of a caregiver and looked after every part of my daily needs with meticulous care.

She even chatted with me and painted pictures of our future together.

“Once you’re back on your feet, we’ll go to Nordheim.

“Glacieland too! The northern lights there are gorgeous.”

I looked at her calmly.

I had already seen every place she mentioned. They were all over her social media. There were the scenery shots, the couple photos, and even pictures of their home.

In the three years she had been with Peter, she had already lived every future she was creating for me at this moment.

I grew tired of the fake conversations, the lies, and the pretense.

While she was happily fabricating our future together, I interrupted her.

“Christmas is coming up. Will you come with me to see the Christmas tree in Central Square?

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

She agreed.

On Christmas Day, I went to Central Square at the time we had agreed upon.

After more than twenty years together, it was time for a proper goodbye.

The place was crowded. Even so, I spotted her at a glance.

Peter was standing beside her.

“Didn’t you promise me you’d get a divorce? We’ve been together for three years!

“Frederick is dead weight. How much longer are you going to drag him around?”

He was throwing a fit. He grabbed her hand and said, “Divorce him. Let him officiate our wedding.

“I’ve already picked the date. The fifteenth of next month.”

That was January fifteenth. It was the day when Irene and I had gotten trapped in the blizzard five years ago.

She did not agree, but I could see her hesitate.

Her hesitation was enough to tell me everything I needed to know.

The hope that she still loved me somewhere in her heart was gone entirely.

I looked down at the boarding information on my phone, pushed my wheelchair forward, and did not look back.

Frederick's POVThe next time I saw Irene was a year later.I had been in a coma for five years, and my savings had sat untouched the whole time.I used that money for rehabilitation. During that time, Matthew called me. He said Irene refused to divorce me and wanted to see me.He advised me to take it to court, as that was the best option for me. I did not want to see her, especially not in a courtroom. So, for a whole year, I focused on rehab. My legs gradually regained their feeling. The doctor said that if I kept at it, there was a strong chance I could stand again. It was the first time since waking up that I felt genuinely happy. Being able to stand meant I could be like everyone else. I would never need a wheelchair again. It was on that very day that I saw Irene. I had not expected her to find this place. She looked worn out. Her hair was not done up the way it used to be. She looked like she had been running around all day.“Frederick, I’m not signing the divor

Irene did not pay attention to what Lily said afterward. Her ears were ringing, and her mind went completely blank.Once she snapped out of it, she took a cab home. The divorce lawyer, Matthew Lance, was sitting on the couch waiting for her.“My client has already signed the papers. The only thing he’s asking for is the money in his account. He’s not taking anything else. “Take your time. Sign whenever you’re ready. These terms are all in your favor.”Her face gradually turned pale. She remembered Frederick bringing up divorce before. It seemed he had been serious about it. As luck would have it, Peter called at that exact moment. Matthew sat on one side of the couch calmly, waiting for her to hang up.“I’m not signing anything. If he wants a divorce, he can come say it to my face.” Her breathing came raggedly.“Ms. Arlington, signing is in your best interest. As it stands, my client is still alive. What you’re doing is adultery.“I’ve done my homework. You were consider

Irene sighed as she glanced at her watch. The time they had agreed on had already passed, but Frederick had not shown up.She frowned and started to panic. Frederick was not the kind of person who would stand someone up.Her gut told her something had happened to him. Perhaps he had gotten into an accident on the way! With that thought, she grew even more agitated and anxious. She should have gone home to pick him up from the start. He was still disabled, after all.She called Lily, the caregiver. “Mr. Bradshaw? He left a while ago.”Hearing that made Irene even more certain that something had happened to him. Otherwise, he would already have arrived. The moment that thought crossed her mind, she froze. It suddenly hit her. If he had gotten there earlier, he might have heard or seen everything she had said to Peter. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself. She quickly dialed Frederick’s number. No one picked up. In the past, whenever she called, he answered

Third-Person POVIn the end, Irene turned him down. She shoved Peter away. “I promised Frederick I’d spend Christmas with him. He should be here any minute. You need to go!”After getting rejected, Peter did not make a scene. Instead, he held onto her and would not let go.“I’m not going anywhere! It doesn’t matter if he sees us. Didn’t you already make things clear to him?“We’ve been together three years! We’ve done everything there is to do. There’s no reason to keep stringing him along.”Ignoring his remark, she kept urging him to leave. For some reason, she simply did not want Frederick to see her with Peter. She thought about how distant Frederick had been with her these past few days.He seemed calmer and more understanding about the whole thing. He did not throw a fit. That was exactly what made her feel uneasy.“Just go! The fact is that he did save my life.“I’m not divorcing him!”Peter looked unhappy, but he still kissed her on the forehead and said, “It’s oka

Irene only returned home after dark. She was carrying bags of all sizes when she returned. Most of them were daily necessities. When she pushed the door open, she saw I was in the living room. She set the bags down on the table, crouched in front of my wheelchair, and said softly, “Frederick, don’t take what I said earlier to heart. I was just…“I’m just exhausted. I’m only one person, and I have to work while taking care of you. For five years, I’ve done my best. Anyone would be tired.”She continued cautiously, “After your accident, I couldn’t bear to be in this house. Too many memories… That’s why I never stayed here.“Don’t worry. I hired a caregiver. She’ll take care of you from now on.”Back then, those words would have moved me. But I knew she had already found someone better. She stood up. Her gaze swept over the plane ticket on my phone, then she said with a smile, “Once your legs are a bit better, I’ll go with you wherever you want.”I pursed my lips tightly and gav
