Chapter 2

Autor: Wayne Wyeth
My roommates and classmates piled on. They accused me of throwing my money around, bullying anyone less fortunate, and treating ordinary people—especially scholarship students—like dirt.

The accusations exploded online.

Strangers across the country joined the abuse. My university expelled me for bringing it into disrepute. My family called me a disgrace and cut me off.

With my name ruined and nowhere to go, I survived on food scavenged from dumpsters.

Before long, I suffered a fatal case of food poisoning. I died beside the road, completely alone.

Trevor, on the other hand, preyed on my parents' guilt until they adopted him. Then he took everything that should have been mine.

He appeared at high-profile receptions as the Fairchild heir, looking insufferably pleased with himself.

Once, as he raised a champagne glass, he'd declared, "A toast to this truly momentous day!"

Fortunately, fate had given me another chance.

The Trevor in front of me was still the impoverished student who needed my sponsorship to survive.

Nothing had happened yet.

This time, I would make sure he paid for his own greed.

"I'm not feeling well," I said coolly. "I'll skip dinner."

Let's see how Trevor handles the bill without his favorite sucker around to pay it.

The classroom fell silent.

Every head turned toward me. I ignored them and started for the door.

Trevor hurried over and blocked my path. He shoved his backpack into my arms.

"Landon, I've got medicine in here. Take some and you'll feel better.

"We're all meeting for the first time! A dinner like this means something. If you miss today, you can never get it back!

"Just push through the discomfort. Make a little sacrifice for the group."

He wrapped his demand in noble-sounding speeches, but it was obvious what he wanted: to make me feel guilty enough to come.

In this life, I wasn't putting up with his nonsense.

I tossed his backpack aside.

"Unfortunately for you, I can't just 'push through it.' And I'm not taking random medicine that has nothing to do with my symptoms."

I met his eyes.

"If you stop me from getting medical care and something happens to me, that's on you."

The backpack burst open. Its contents scattered across the floor.

Among them was the so-called medicine: a bottle of senior wellness supplements Trevor had bought with my money. He'd been planning to mail them to his parents.

I almost laughed at the absurdity.

Trevor stood frozen, clearly unprepared for me to turn on him so sharply. Then he crouched to gather his things, discreetly wiping away tears.

"I didn't think of it that way," he said, his voice breaking. "I just didn't want you to miss out and regret it forever."

"If you don't want to come, Mr. Fairchild, then don't. I shouldn't have interfered."

He looked so wounded, so selfless, that it would have been convincing if I didn't know him.

My classmates glared at me.

"It's just dinner! How much time could it possibly take? Trevor was trying to help, and you threatened him. Landon, you're unbelievable!"

"You're healthy as a horse. You're not sick! You just think you're too good to eat with us!"

"The Fairchild heir is more delicate than a porcelain doll. Apparently he can't stand breathing the same air as the rest of us."

"Rich kids always have some ridiculous excuse."

Trevor acted even more distressed than I did.

"Landon loves going out to dinner," he protested. "He's always inviting the other wealthy kids from his circle..."

He stopped, as though he had only just realized what he'd implied.

"I mean, I'm sure he really is sick. It's not because he looks down on everyone."

What a performance. He might as well have announced that I only ate with people I considered my equals.

My classmates' suspicion hardened into contempt.

Our other two roommates, Brody Kessler and Nate Lindgren, snorted.

Brody didn't bother hiding his contempt.

"It's the twenty-first century. Everyone's equal! I'm not going to grovel to you like Trevor does. Come or don't come. Honestly, you'll just ruin my appetite if you show up."

All his scheming had come to nothing.Trevor stared at the crumpled application in his hand, unwilling to accept defeat."But what about my $150,000 debt?""Figure it out yourself," I said coldly."I can't keep cleaning up your messes forever. You're an adult. You knew there would be consequences when you did this."He exploded."I was tricked, too!"Vivian said she'd help me! I thought someone had finally come to save me. But she only wanted me for sex!"And every gift she gave me was fake. None of it was worth anything!"He broke down sobbing, struggling to get the words out."I don't know what else to do. If I can't repay that loan, my whole life is over!"Landon, you've always been kind. Please, feel sorry for me one more time. Save me. I really have learned my lesson..."For an instant, the boy crying in front of me looked like the frail, half-starved kid I'd first met all those years ago.I felt a stab of sadness. Not because I wanted him back in my life, but becaus

"I-I'll make it up to you," Trevor stammered. "I'll do anything. I'll work for you, serve you, whatever you want! Just please keep sponsoring me until I graduate so I can repay my parents for all the years they've struggled."He addressed me as "Mr. Fairchild" with every other breath, sounding as humble as a servant. But the malice in his eyes was impossible to hide.My heart gave a hard thump.Something was wrong.I dropped my indifferent expression and watched him closely. Then I noticed it.For the first time, Trevor was wearing a flashy earring. Every so often, a tiny red light blinked from its surface. It was so small I hadn't seen it at first. No wonder he'd suddenly started begging for forgiveness after openly declaring war on me.This was his real plan.Same Trevor. Same dirty tricks. The only question was whether he was recording me or broadcasting live.My father, who hadn't contacted me in ages, suddenly sent a message."You're trending for all the wrong reason

I stared at the cheap ring and laughed to myself. That thing couldn't have cost more than two dollars with free shipping. Then I overheard a conversation at the next table."Our freshman advisor's delivery order had my phone number on it by mistake," one student said. "The courier called me, and I ended up collecting her package. Guess what was inside?"He raised his eyebrows suggestively. His friend covered her mouth. "You don't mean...""Oh, I do. One look at that stuff and my face went red."The advisor was in such a hurry that she had me deliver it straight to the motel beside campus."He lowered his voice."I'm telling you, she's not much to look at, but she's adventurous and loves pretending she's rich. She's fooled more than a few younger guys into getting involved with her. Wonder who the unlucky one is this time."My finger froze above the screen.I reopened Trevor's post and enlarged the photo.Through the gap between his fingers, I could make out part of a printe

"Too many frozen drinks at once aren't good for you," I said with a pleasant smile. "You should pace yourselves. Maybe next time."You'll get another chance."That single comment was enough to turn my classmates' resentment on Trevor. If he hadn't made such a fuss over those cheap drinks, they could have been enjoying the premium ice cream with everyone else.I glanced at him.He stood alone, fists clenched, glaring at me while the classmates he'd tried so hard to impress ignored him.I let my mouth curve into a challenging smile. In my previous life, that popularity had belonged to Trevor. He'd used my money to win over the entire freshman class, leaving them with a wonderful first impression of him.Word had spread across campus. Everyone felt sorry for poor Trevor and believed he was suffering under my abuse. They ignored my explanations, labeled me a heartless bully, and joined forces to ostracize me.This time, I'd acted first.I had the goodwill, the attention, and th

"What are we going to do? I don't want to go to jail!""Even if someone sold everything I own, it wouldn't come close to $150,000!"Some bystanders had started to feel sorry for the students. When they heard how much the dinner had cost, their sympathy evaporated.Who orders luxury liquor they can't afford? They'd brought this on themselves. My classmates started blaming each other."You had to order that out-of-season king crab! It cost a fortune, and there was barely any meat on it. You pay for that!""And you ordered plate after plate of abalone because you wanted to treat yourself. That wasn't free!"Eventually, every accusation pointed back to Trevor."What college student drinks liquor that expensive? Who gave you the nerve to order it?""We should never have gone! To hell with your stupid milestones!"Trevor tried to give them the familiar speech."I was only thinking of everyone. The occasion was supposed to be special..."No one wanted to hear another word about ma

"How is that possible?"Trevor was so shocked that his voice echoed through the restaurant. He didn't seem to notice. He was too busy waving the card at the manager."Your machine must be broken! Get another one!"The manager panicked and brought out every card reader the restaurant owned.Trevor tried them one after another.Every time, he heard the same response."Transaction declined. Please try again."With each failure, his face grew paler. By the last machine, he could barely stand. The others were so stunned that they forgot to keep holding me down.I slipped free, walked over, and picked up the black card Trevor had dropped. He was clutching his head and muttering, "No. No, that's impossible!"The tables had turned. Now I was the one looking down at him.I gave his bloodless cheek a light pat."I told you I didn't have any money. Believe me now?"Trevor snapped out of his daze and glared at me."That card has a daily spending limit of $750,000! How could the pa
