Seraphina Voss sat on the edge of her bed, knees pulled to her chest.

The attic room was cold. It had never really felt like a bedroom.

Downstairs, the party was in full swing. She could hear Clara's laugh through the floorboards, bright and easy, the way it always was when she had an audience.

Something had felt wrong for three days.

Her parents kept whispering in hallways. They stopped talking the moment she walked in.

She had been waiting for it to find her.

It didn't take long.

The door burst open. Seraphina flinched off the bed.

Her mother stormed in first, hair pushed out of place, eyes wild with something close to panic. Her father came in right behind her and grabbed her arm without a word, yanking her to her feet.

Pain shot up her shoulder.

"Clara is crying," her mother said. She wasn't looking at Seraphina. She was looking around the bare little room like it disgusted her. "She locked herself in the study. She says she won't marry a monster like Sebastian King."

The name hit the room like a stone in water.

Everyone knew that name. Everyone who knew it knew to be afraid of it. Sebastian King didn't ask. He didn't negotiate. He decided what he wanted, and then he took it.

For months, her parents had been grooming Clara to be his bride.

A heavy silk gown landed on the bed beside her. Ivory white. Covered in lace.

It wasn't meant for Seraphina.

It was Clara's wedding dress.

"You're marrying Sebastian King tonight," her father said. "In your sister's place."

There was no apology in his voice. No hesitation. He said it the way a man announces good news.

"You'll do it without complaint," he added. "It's the only way to save this family."

"I won't do it." Seraphina stood up straighter. "This isn't right. He's expecting Clara. When he finds out—"

"He won't find out until it's too late." Her mother's voice was sharp. She turned to the hallway. "Bring them in."

Two maids stepped into the room. Then two security guards.

Seraphina's heart slammed against her ribs. She stepped back toward the wall.

"Don't touch me."

"Hold her still," her father ordered, and turned his back.

The guards moved fast. One gripped both her arms and pinned them behind her. She twisted and kicked, but it didn't matter. Her shin hit the bed frame as they forced her into the chair at her vanity.

"Be careful with her face," her mother said, arms folded. "She needs to look presentable for the signing."

"Let go of me!" Seraphina's voice cracked. "This is wrong—"

Nobody answered.

The maids stripped her clothes with brisk, impersonal hands. They forced her arms through the stiff lace of Clara's gown. The dress was too big at the waist, so they pulled the corset strings tight—so tight the boning dug into her ribs and stole the breath from her lungs.

They pinned her hair back. They pressed a thick veil over her face.

The room dissolved into grey shapes.

"Perfect," her mother said, studying her through the veil. "With the dim lighting at the King estate, no one will notice until the papers are signed."

"Please," Seraphina whispered. "Mother, please. Sebastian King will destroy me when he finds out."

Her mother gripped her jaw through the lace. Her eyes were cold.

"Then let him," she said. "As long as this family survives, your purpose is served."

They dragged her out without letting her walk properly. The dress swept the floor behind her. They loaded her into a car with a guard on either side, the child locks engaged, and the city lights blurred past the windows.

She understood then, with total clarity, that she had never been a daughter in that house.

She had only ever been a resource they hadn't used yet.

At the King estate, the servants worked on her in silence. No one met her eyes. No one spoke to her. To them, she wasn't a bride arriving.

She was a delivery being prepared for handover.

The corridor to the bridal suite was long and lined with cold stone. Each footstep sounded like a countdown. When the guards finally stopped at the mahogany doors, the head of security turned to her, his face blank.

"He is waiting."

The doors swung open.

The room beyond was pitch black. It smelled of whiskey, cologne, and something heavier she had no name for.

In the center of the darkness stood a tall, shadowed figure, completely still.

The doors closed behind her with a sound like a verdict.

The balcony ran the full length of the King estate's eastern facade. It had always been there — the same stone balustrade, the same proportions, the same view of the estate grounds falling away toward the tree line and beyond that the city rising in its familiar, indifferent arrangement of steel and glass and light. Sebastian had stood on this balcony more times than he could count, in more versions of himself than he could now fully recognize, and the view had been the same each time and he had been different each time and the difference between who he had been and who he was now was the specific, inhabited distance of everything that had happened between the first time and this one.Tonight the city was lit.Not unusually — it was lit the way it was always lit at this hour, the ordinary, working luminescence of a city that didn't stop because the sun had gone down, that continued with its usual, self-contained energy regardless of what was happening on any particular balcony on any

The renovations took four months. Not because the work was complicated — the structural assessment had confirmed that the east wing renovation was straightforward, the greenhouses bones still sound, the glass panels replaceable with modern equivalents that would do what the old ones had done but better, and the stone workbenches that had held the original equipment were solid enough to serve as foundations for the new ones.It took four months because Seraphina was specific.Every detail reviewed. Every material sourced through the same suppliers she used for Verve's research facilities. The lighting designed by the same specialist who had done the thirty-eighth floor. The storage systems organized with the precise, considered logic of someone who had spent five years building a cosmetic chemistry operation from scratch and understood exactly what a working laboratory required and in what order. The greenhouse was also preserved. This had been non-negotiable."I want both," she had to

Liam found out on a Saturday. Not because Seraphina told him on a Saturday — the telling had been planned for Sunday, over breakfast, the same configuration as the engagement announcement because it had worked and because Seraphina believed in repeating what worked. But Liam found the velvet box on a Friday evening. He found it because he was looking for something else.He was looking for the small penknife Sebastian used for the model railway work — a precise, controlled tool that had been assigned to the top shelf of the study bookcase and that Liam had been told repeatedly was not a toy and was not to be touched without Sebastian present, both of which instructions he had respected to the letter by waiting until Sebastian was in the adjacent room and the touching was therefore technically proximate to supervision. He was on the chair reaching for the top shelf when the velvet box, which Seraphina had placed in the study for safekeeping while she decided the correct moment, fell fro

  • The Substitute Bride's Twins: chasing his ex wife back   CHAPTER 97: THE SPEECH

The acceptance speech was still running when they came back through the wing curtain. Not Seraphina's speech — that was finished, the room still processing it with the particular, sustained energy of something that had landed and was still landing. The host was at the podium delivering the formal presentation remarks, the specific, transitional language of an event moving from its keynote address to its trophy presentation, and the seven hundred people were settling back into their seats with the slightly elevated, attentive quality of an audience that had received something real and was organizing its response to it.Katherine materialized at Seraphina's shoulder the moment she came through the curtain. She looked at Seraphina. She looked at Sebastian. She looked at the trophy in Seraphina's hand. She looked at the velvet box in the other."No," she said."Yes," Seraphina said.Katherine looked at the ceiling briefly."Here," she said. "Backstage.""He asked," Seraphina said. "I resp

  • The Substitute Bride's Twins: chasing his ex wife back   CHAPTER 96: GLOBAL ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR

One year later. The Verve tower looked different at night. Not structurally — the steel and the glass were what they had always been, forty-two floors of deliberate, intentional architecture rising above the financial district with the quiet, unannounced confidence of something that had always intended to be exactly where it was. But at night, from the outside, it caught the city's light in a specific way that it didn't catch during the day — the glass becoming a mirror and then a lantern simultaneously, reflecting the street below and emitting the warm, working light of the floors above, and the effect was the specific, particular beauty of something useful that is also, without trying to be, beautiful.Seraphina had noticed this for the first time standing outside the building at seven AM on a Tuesday morning four years ago, newly arrived in a city she didn't know yet, looking up at a building that didn't exist yet in any form she could recognize as significant, and she had thought:

The doors at the end of the grand ballroom were twelve feet high.Seraphina had specified this when Katherine was coordinating the venue — not the doors specifically, those were fixed, but the opening of them. She had specified that when the doors opened they should open fully, both panels, the complete width, because she was not walking through a gap.She was walking through an entrance. She stood behind the closed doors at twelve thirty PM with Maya beside her and the iris basket and the specific, settled quality of someone who has been moving toward a moment for a long time and has arrived at it and is taking the last available second to be with the arriving before the moment begins. She could hear the room through the doors. Not loudly — the Meridian's ballroom doors were thick and well-made — but the specific, ambient quality of a full room holding itself in anticipation. Three hundred people, the right ones, the people Katherine and Seraphina had selected together over three wee
