Chapter 4

Author: Greedy Kitty
“The alcohol upset my stomach. I didn’t want to disturb your rest, so I went to the hospital myself. This morning, Elizabeth said she had plans to meet you here, so I thought I’d bring her over and pick you up on the way.”

A nearly perfect lie. I had underestimated the mafia don’s ability to respond.

I stayed silent and followed behind them. When we reached my parents’ graves, I placed the roses for them.

The only two people in the world who ever loved me lie here forever. I stared at the headstone, tears gathering in my eyes.

Elizabeth walked over and gently patted my back. “Emily, I know they left you early, but now you have Paul. And you’re about to welcome a new life. They’ll always be with you, starting a new life together.”

Her tone was certain, as if she were making a promise on Paul’s behalf.

“We’ll always be with you. We’ll start a new life together.”

Paul placed his hand on my shoulder as well, but it felt like he was only repeating Elizabeth’s words.

Promising to take care of me, just to reassure the woman he loved.

I took a deep breath, swallowing all the negativity. Then I gently removed his hand from my shoulder, looked at my parents’ photos, and said with a smile, “That’s right. I’ll start over.”

This time, it would have nothing to do with Paul.

After leaving the cemetery, Paul opened the front passenger door for Elizabeth, a seat that used to belong to me.

Then, he said to me without changing his expression, “The seat behind the driver is the safest. You’re pregnant, sit there.”

My eyelashes trembled, but I got in without hesitation.

For a long stretch, the car was filled with heavy silence. Then Elizabeth started a conversation.

“I heard there’s a newly opened Francian restaurant nearby. They have foie gras and truffles flown in.”

“Really? When I was in Perisa…”

Just like that, the two of them went from foie gras and truffles to Monet and Van Gogh.

I had never been to Francia, so I couldn’t join the conversation.

They shared the same interests, the same memories.

No matter what one said, the other could immediately respond. They were perfectly in sync, truly soulmates.

And I, the substitute, had to roll down the window just to breathe.

At the restaurant, they sat facing each other by the floor-to-ceiling window. I had no choice but to sit on the outer side.

Paul snapped his fingers, and a waiter came at once.

“Elizabeth, what would you like to eat?”

He asked it instinctively.

Elizabeth picked up the menu, about to say something, then smiled and looked at me instead.

“Let the pregnant woman order first.”

I pointed at a few dishes at random, then handed the menu back to the waiter.

When the food I ordered was served, Paul’s brows gradually furrowed.

“You can’t eat raw food. Did you forget the doctor’s instructions?”

Elizabeth turned to look at my stomach, surprise flashing in her eyes.

“Emily, you’re so thin. Why aren’t you showing at all?”

Paul also sensed something was off. He suddenly stood up, reaching toward my abdomen.

At that moment, someone at a corner table stood up along with Paul and walked straight toward us, his right hand moving toward his coat.

Paul immediately sensed danger.

At the first gunshot, he instinctively lunged toward Elizabeth. The bullet grazed past his ear.

Guests in the restaurant began screaming and fleeing.

Amid the chaos, the second gunshot rang out.

The bullet pierced through my shoulder, and the force drove me backward as my back slammed into the edge of the table.

In an instant, burning heat and sharp pain surged into my mind, and sweat rolled down my forehead.

The bodyguards pinned the attacker to the ground.

Paul picked up Elizabeth and rushed out without even looking at me.

Blood soaked half my chest. Every breath felt like someone was tearing at the muscles in my shoulder.

However, for a moment, I couldn’t tell which hurt more—my body or my heart.

Other bodyguards rushed over to treat my wound and called an ambulance.

To stop the bleeding, they pressed gauze hard against my shoulder. Pain spread through my entire body.

I turned my head and saw Paul and Elizabeth arguing at the restaurant entrance.

“I told you I’m fine! Go back and check if Emily is hurt!”

Elizabeth shook off Paul’s hand angrily, but he grabbed her again.

“Be good. Let me check you again.”

“Paul, Emily is your legal wife. She’s the donna of the Garcia family, and she’s carrying your heir! The one you should care about is her!”

My head began to spin. I didn’t know if it was from the gunshot wound, the chill from last night, or the blows of everything that had happened these past days.

“So what? She will never be more important than you. I can replace my donna at any time. Who would dare object?”

Paul was still pulling at Elizabeth when the ambulance arrived and lifted me onto a stretcher.

Elizabeth was the first to react when she saw me on the verge of passing out.

“Emily! Oh my God, how did this happen?”

I lowered my head and thought for a moment, then forcibly separated the two men who were on the verge of clashing.I took a deep breath and gently brushed Fernando’s cheek.“Fernando, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. This time, let me be the one to end things with him.”With that, I grabbed Paul’s arm and pulled him into the stairwell.“Emily, you still love me, don’t you? That man has just confused you for a moment. You left because you wanted to make things right between Elizabeth and me. You stepped back because you love me!”“No, you’re wrong. Even without Fernando, I wouldn’t be with you. I left because I can’t accept a man whose heart beats for someone else.”From the moment he gave his heart to another, no matter how much he said he loved me, it all sounded hollow.Paul froze where he stood, his hand instinctively pressing against his chest. For the first time, defeat appeared on the face of this proud man.He knew that everything had come to this because of

“That’s right, Paul. That’s none of your concern because I’m just your ex-wife.”I shook off his hand, then glanced at Fernando with disappointment. The heartache in my chest surged again.I could accept falling for a poor man. However, I couldn’t accept falling for another liar, even if he was a prince.“And I never said I wanted to be with a prince.”I left the two men behind and walked away, disappointed. The sunlight outside the museum stung my eyes.So the sweetness of these past days had really just been fireworks. While it was brilliant for a moment, it left nothing behind.“Wait! Emily, I was afraid that if I told you my identity from the start, I’d scare you away. Let me explain!”Fernando caught up quickly, grabbing my hand and pulling me against his chest.I tried to struggle, but his grip was too tight.I glared at him.“Explain what? Explain how you already knew who I was? How you knew there’d be no ending, yet still showed up at my window every day with flower

During the Easter holiday, Fernando showed up downstairs every morning. He always wore a light linen shirt and faded jeans, his baseball cap pulled low over half his face, giving him an air of mystery. In his hands, there was always a different bouquet.I knew he wasn’t here for just a cup of coffee. However, I waited for him to tell me his intentions. Also, who exactly was he? Was he really just a photographer? He didn’t look wealthy, yet the police treated him with respect and even deference.Still, when I saw his sincere smile, I set my doubts aside for the moment.“Where are we going today, Mr. Tour Guide?”I handed him the coffee I had prepared.“We are going to the Prado Museum. There are many masterpieces there.”He took the coffee and handed me a rose.“Picasso? Francisco?”“The ballerina princess knows art, too?” he asked with interest.“Just a little.”Once inside the museum, I realized more and more that he was a mystery. No matter which painting we stopped at,

The next morning, I was woken by my neighbor’s loud voice, feeling as if everything from last night was a dream. That handsome guy named Fernando didn’t show up again in the following days.Still, without realizing it, I found myself walking to Place du Soleil for a stroll, returning to that same restaurant to order the same paella.Easter arrived. My landlord told me there would be the most famous Holy Week procession, even attended by the royal family. However, my mind was entirely focused on finding a job.I had spent nearly all my savings on the cleanup specialist, after all. I didn’t have much money left.I pushed through the excited crowds, ignoring the Val Verde royal family watching the procession from the church balcony, and hurried toward my interview. After passing the rigorous evaluation, the director handed me an offer and said kindly, “I watched your audition video. That’s why I’m working overtime on Easter. And now, I think it was worth it. I hope you’ll shine in

We sat on opposite sides of the police station in total silence, not even looking at each other. That was when a police officer marched in with another man ahead of him and pulled my wallet out of the man's pocket."Ma'am, see if anything is missing."I checked it immediately to find everything was there. It was then that I realized I had completely misjudged that strange photographer.I looked over at him apologetically, but he was already watching me with a raised eyebrow. I remembered his threat to sue me for defamation. Since I didn’t know the laws of Val Verde and didn't want any trouble, I decided to take the initiative.I walked over to him, offering an awkward smile. "I'm sorry. I just got here and am not familiar with the area yet. That’s why I was a bit over-cautious. “Could you please not sue me? If you want compensation, I can pay you a little, though I don't have much cash left."His deep blue eyes locked onto mine long enough to make my cheeks burn. Finally, he

After landing in Mayrit, the immigration officer read out my new name in Verdian. It took me a moment to realize that “Lucia” was me, a new identity arranged by the cleanup specialist.I awkwardly explained, “Sorry, I’m not very familiar with the Verdian language.”She simply shrugged and let me pass.Dragging my suitcase out of the subway station, I followed a note to find the place I had rented back in New Haven. After several wrong turns, I finally found it on an unremarkable street and immediately realized it was nothing like what the agent had described. The “spacious, bright studio apartment with a private bathroom” was actually a low, aging building from the last century. The exhaustion from the journey, combined with the disappointment, made me feel a little disheartened. I had only just stepped onto the path toward freedom. However, when I pushed open the window, I realized I was wrong. The sunset poured in generously, coating the entire worn room in a warm golden glo
