Chapter 6

Author: Greedy Kitty
In fact, Paul came back that very night.

Still shaken by the assassination attempt, he sent many men to protect me and personally stayed by my bedside with a gun.

On the day I was told I could be discharged, he finally found out who had sent the assassin. While dealing with it, he accidentally fractured his hand.

After hearing the news, Elizabeth didn’t trust the servants to take care of us and came to Garcia Manor herself to help.

She was everywhere in the manor. One moment she was changing Paul’s dressing, the next she was guiding me through recovery exercises, like the true lady of the house.

When my arm could finally be lifted again, I planned to go to the practice room to stretch.

As I passed by Paul’s study, I heard the sound of something shattering inside.

The door was slightly ajar. I could clearly see Elizabeth standing behind the statue of the Virgin Mary. It seemed she had also discovered Paul’s hidden room.

Her hands trembled as she brushed over his collections. Then she looked in shock at the photos of me, marked and investigated like prey.

After a long while, she suddenly began tearing down my photos, then threw all of Paul’s things related to her into a cardboard box.

Seeing that she was about to come out, I quickly ran into the next room.

She appeared in front of the trash bin not long after, holding those things.

From the love letters, diaries, to photos, everything was torn apart. All of Paul’s collections were dumped into the trash.

Once she was finished, she returned to the hidden room and called Paul over.

They argued fiercely over the things in the room. From where I hid in the next room, I could catch parts of it.

“Why would you keep these at home? What if Emily finds out?”

“She doesn’t know the statue is a mechanism. And without my permission, she wouldn’t dare come in.”

“You’re that sure? What if she did go in? She loves you so much. Have you thought about how hurt she would be if she saw all this?”

“So what if she’s hurt? Listen, Elizabeth, you don’t need to worry about that. You only need to answer me.

“Are you still going to marry someone else? As long as you say no, I’ll divorce her immediately!”

With a loud bang, Elizabeth slammed the door and ran out.

Through the floor-to-ceiling window, I saw her drive away. Right after, Paul’s car left the manor, too.

I pressed a hand to my chest. This time, aside from my heart beating faster from hearing the truth, it didn’t seem to hurt anymore.

That was good.

The wounds on my body and the ones in my heart were almost healed.

Late that night, I saw that Paul had personally gone to the trash bin and picked up everything Elizabeth had thrown away.

Over the next three days, he locked himself in the study. I guessed he was repairing those collections.

I didn’t ask a single question. I just told the servants to bring him food every day.

Now that my injuries had fully healed, I invited a few old friends in New Haven to a bar for a small gathering. After all, I wouldn’t be back once I left.

During the conversation, someone mentioned they could introduce me to the Royal Val Verde Ballet, but I declined.

This time, I wanted to rely on my own efforts to prove myself.

At the end of the gathering, I planned to go to the restroom before leaving. As I passed the smoking area, I heard familiar names.

“Paul, you skip the alumni gathering every year. If Elizabeth hadn’t come back this time, we still wouldn’t have seen you.”

“Didn’t expect you to still be hung up on Elizabeth. You two were the legendary couple back in school. I still remember when you confessed. You used a helicopter to scatter flower petals. That video is still on the school forum!”

“I remember that, too. And Paul playing the guitar under Elizabeth’s window all night, singing a love song he wrote himself.”

Someone pulled up the video and played it.

I listened quietly for a while.

In my mind, an image of twenty-year-old Paul appeared. He was bright, charming, with no ruthlessness in his eyes, only sincerity, as he played the guitar and sang with feeling, “I will love you forever…”

That was his youth, a time that could never return.

It was a beautiful love song, but that was all.

After all, it wasn’t sung for me.

I smiled and shook my head, about to leave. When I looked up, I saw Elizabeth’s reflection on the metal wall.

She was standing behind me, watching me in a panic.

My heart skipped a beat.

I couldn’t let her know that I had discovered everything. That would ruin my plan.

Without turning around, I hurried toward the bar’s exit.

I lowered my head and thought for a moment, then forcibly separated the two men who were on the verge of clashing.I took a deep breath and gently brushed Fernando’s cheek.“Fernando, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. This time, let me be the one to end things with him.”With that, I grabbed Paul’s arm and pulled him into the stairwell.“Emily, you still love me, don’t you? That man has just confused you for a moment. You left because you wanted to make things right between Elizabeth and me. You stepped back because you love me!”“No, you’re wrong. Even without Fernando, I wouldn’t be with you. I left because I can’t accept a man whose heart beats for someone else.”From the moment he gave his heart to another, no matter how much he said he loved me, it all sounded hollow.Paul froze where he stood, his hand instinctively pressing against his chest. For the first time, defeat appeared on the face of this proud man.He knew that everything had come to this because of

“That’s right, Paul. That’s none of your concern because I’m just your ex-wife.”I shook off his hand, then glanced at Fernando with disappointment. The heartache in my chest surged again.I could accept falling for a poor man. However, I couldn’t accept falling for another liar, even if he was a prince.“And I never said I wanted to be with a prince.”I left the two men behind and walked away, disappointed. The sunlight outside the museum stung my eyes.So the sweetness of these past days had really just been fireworks. While it was brilliant for a moment, it left nothing behind.“Wait! Emily, I was afraid that if I told you my identity from the start, I’d scare you away. Let me explain!”Fernando caught up quickly, grabbing my hand and pulling me against his chest.I tried to struggle, but his grip was too tight.I glared at him.“Explain what? Explain how you already knew who I was? How you knew there’d be no ending, yet still showed up at my window every day with flower

During the Easter holiday, Fernando showed up downstairs every morning. He always wore a light linen shirt and faded jeans, his baseball cap pulled low over half his face, giving him an air of mystery. In his hands, there was always a different bouquet.I knew he wasn’t here for just a cup of coffee. However, I waited for him to tell me his intentions. Also, who exactly was he? Was he really just a photographer? He didn’t look wealthy, yet the police treated him with respect and even deference.Still, when I saw his sincere smile, I set my doubts aside for the moment.“Where are we going today, Mr. Tour Guide?”I handed him the coffee I had prepared.“We are going to the Prado Museum. There are many masterpieces there.”He took the coffee and handed me a rose.“Picasso? Francisco?”“The ballerina princess knows art, too?” he asked with interest.“Just a little.”Once inside the museum, I realized more and more that he was a mystery. No matter which painting we stopped at,

The next morning, I was woken by my neighbor’s loud voice, feeling as if everything from last night was a dream. That handsome guy named Fernando didn’t show up again in the following days.Still, without realizing it, I found myself walking to Place du Soleil for a stroll, returning to that same restaurant to order the same paella.Easter arrived. My landlord told me there would be the most famous Holy Week procession, even attended by the royal family. However, my mind was entirely focused on finding a job.I had spent nearly all my savings on the cleanup specialist, after all. I didn’t have much money left.I pushed through the excited crowds, ignoring the Val Verde royal family watching the procession from the church balcony, and hurried toward my interview. After passing the rigorous evaluation, the director handed me an offer and said kindly, “I watched your audition video. That’s why I’m working overtime on Easter. And now, I think it was worth it. I hope you’ll shine in

We sat on opposite sides of the police station in total silence, not even looking at each other. That was when a police officer marched in with another man ahead of him and pulled my wallet out of the man's pocket."Ma'am, see if anything is missing."I checked it immediately to find everything was there. It was then that I realized I had completely misjudged that strange photographer.I looked over at him apologetically, but he was already watching me with a raised eyebrow. I remembered his threat to sue me for defamation. Since I didn’t know the laws of Val Verde and didn't want any trouble, I decided to take the initiative.I walked over to him, offering an awkward smile. "I'm sorry. I just got here and am not familiar with the area yet. That’s why I was a bit over-cautious. “Could you please not sue me? If you want compensation, I can pay you a little, though I don't have much cash left."His deep blue eyes locked onto mine long enough to make my cheeks burn. Finally, he

After landing in Mayrit, the immigration officer read out my new name in Verdian. It took me a moment to realize that “Lucia” was me, a new identity arranged by the cleanup specialist.I awkwardly explained, “Sorry, I’m not very familiar with the Verdian language.”She simply shrugged and let me pass.Dragging my suitcase out of the subway station, I followed a note to find the place I had rented back in New Haven. After several wrong turns, I finally found it on an unremarkable street and immediately realized it was nothing like what the agent had described. The “spacious, bright studio apartment with a private bathroom” was actually a low, aging building from the last century. The exhaustion from the journey, combined with the disappointment, made me feel a little disheartened. I had only just stepped onto the path toward freedom. However, when I pushed open the window, I realized I was wrong. The sunset poured in generously, coating the entire worn room in a warm golden glo
