Chapter 8

Author: Greedy Kitty
Grandpa was startled by Paul’s actions and stepped in front of me.

“Doctor, doesn’t the person donating the heart have to be dead?”

“No. The patient’s condition is critical. The donor can use an artificial heart first, then undergo another transplant once a suitable match is found.”

“But Emily is pregnant.” Grandpa looked at Paul in alarm.

Paul froze, as if only just realizing. His expression turned complicated, then gradually pained.

“Emily, you’re still young. We can have another child, but Elizabeth can’t wait. She’s your aunt. You wouldn’t just watch her die, would you?”

There was negotiation in his tone and even pleading.

For the first time, he lowered himself to speak to me, begging me to give my heart to the woman he loved.

How could I refuse?

Wouldn’t he simply kill me and take it anyway if I did?

Tears slid down my face. With a bitter smile, I walked into the matching room.

Three days later, the results came out.

I wasn’t a match.

Fortunately, the hospital found a compatible heart.

When Paul told me the news, I saw him smile with undisguised joy. The gloom that had lingered on his face these past days vanished completely.

Then he said to me, “Emily, your parents are gone. I just don’t want you to lose another relative. After all, Elizabeth has taken good care of you.”

His explanation grew weaker and weaker, but I no longer wanted to question it.

That night, members of the committee suddenly came one after another. They held an emergency meeting in the study.

As I passed by, I heard dissatisfied voices inside.

“Don Garcia, are you sure about this? Have you considered the side effects of this surgery? If your enemies find out, have you thought about what consequences this will bring to the family?”

“That’s right. Elizabeth isn’t a member of the family. Emily is donna, and she’s carrying your heir. If something happens during the surgery, what about her and the child?”

“That’s enough. This matter cannot leave this room. I’m willing to give up thirty percent of my personal assets for the committee to distribute. As for Emily and the child, if anything happens to me, take care of them for me.”

The matching heart was Paul’s. He was going to give his heart to Elizabeth, literally.

For her, he was willing to defy the family and abandon his wife and child to save the woman he truly loved.

What a devoted don!

The urge to push open the door slowly faded.

Back in my room, I received the flight confirmation. I took out my phone and selected a window seat.

When I woke up the next morning, Paul was no longer home. I guessed he had gone to the hospital.

I put my luggage into the trunk and drove to pick up the divorce decree. Then I went to the post office, placed it and the miscarriage report in an exquisite box, before handing it to the clerk.

“Please send this to Garcia Manor in one month.”

A month from now will be Paul’s birthday. By then, he would likely have been discharged.

This would be the birthday gift I had carefully prepared for him.

After finishing my errands, I went to the family hospital. The place was under the highest level of security.

Outside the ward, I saw Paul pressing Elizabeth’s hand against his face.

His eyes were filled with mixed emotions of sadness, relief, and deep love.

To avoid awkwardness, I stepped back a few steps and deliberately made a sound with my heels.

When I walked in again, Paul took the initiative to open the door for me.

“When is the surgery?” I looked at Elizabeth, still unconscious, and asked calmly.

“Tomorrow morning.” He checked his watch, then added, “But I have to leave. I need to go back to Enotria to deal with some urgent matters. I won’t be back for a month. Promise me that while I’m gone, you’ll take care of yourself and the baby.”

“Of course I will.”

I straightened his tie and said in my mind, ‘I’ll take good care of myself in the days without you.’

I walked him to the elevator and pressed the down button. As the doors slowly closed, I smiled at him.

“Goodbye, Paul.”

The formality of my tone made him frown slightly, but the doors had already shut.

After I turned away, the elevator, which should have gone down, slowly began to rise.

While he walked into the operating preparation room, I drove away from the hospital.

He lay down on the operating table after changing into a patient gown.

At the airport, I threw my SIM card into the trash.

The surgery began. Under anesthesia, he fell into a deep sleep. As for me, the plane bound for Spain had already taken me into the sky.

I looked out at the sea of clouds and smiled freely.

Goodbye, Paul, my once beloved.

This time, we will never meet again.

I lowered my head and thought for a moment, then forcibly separated the two men who were on the verge of clashing.I took a deep breath and gently brushed Fernando’s cheek.“Fernando, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. This time, let me be the one to end things with him.”With that, I grabbed Paul’s arm and pulled him into the stairwell.“Emily, you still love me, don’t you? That man has just confused you for a moment. You left because you wanted to make things right between Elizabeth and me. You stepped back because you love me!”“No, you’re wrong. Even without Fernando, I wouldn’t be with you. I left because I can’t accept a man whose heart beats for someone else.”From the moment he gave his heart to another, no matter how much he said he loved me, it all sounded hollow.Paul froze where he stood, his hand instinctively pressing against his chest. For the first time, defeat appeared on the face of this proud man.He knew that everything had come to this because of

“That’s right, Paul. That’s none of your concern because I’m just your ex-wife.”I shook off his hand, then glanced at Fernando with disappointment. The heartache in my chest surged again.I could accept falling for a poor man. However, I couldn’t accept falling for another liar, even if he was a prince.“And I never said I wanted to be with a prince.”I left the two men behind and walked away, disappointed. The sunlight outside the museum stung my eyes.So the sweetness of these past days had really just been fireworks. While it was brilliant for a moment, it left nothing behind.“Wait! Emily, I was afraid that if I told you my identity from the start, I’d scare you away. Let me explain!”Fernando caught up quickly, grabbing my hand and pulling me against his chest.I tried to struggle, but his grip was too tight.I glared at him.“Explain what? Explain how you already knew who I was? How you knew there’d be no ending, yet still showed up at my window every day with flower

During the Easter holiday, Fernando showed up downstairs every morning. He always wore a light linen shirt and faded jeans, his baseball cap pulled low over half his face, giving him an air of mystery. In his hands, there was always a different bouquet.I knew he wasn’t here for just a cup of coffee. However, I waited for him to tell me his intentions. Also, who exactly was he? Was he really just a photographer? He didn’t look wealthy, yet the police treated him with respect and even deference.Still, when I saw his sincere smile, I set my doubts aside for the moment.“Where are we going today, Mr. Tour Guide?”I handed him the coffee I had prepared.“We are going to the Prado Museum. There are many masterpieces there.”He took the coffee and handed me a rose.“Picasso? Francisco?”“The ballerina princess knows art, too?” he asked with interest.“Just a little.”Once inside the museum, I realized more and more that he was a mystery. No matter which painting we stopped at,

The next morning, I was woken by my neighbor’s loud voice, feeling as if everything from last night was a dream. That handsome guy named Fernando didn’t show up again in the following days.Still, without realizing it, I found myself walking to Place du Soleil for a stroll, returning to that same restaurant to order the same paella.Easter arrived. My landlord told me there would be the most famous Holy Week procession, even attended by the royal family. However, my mind was entirely focused on finding a job.I had spent nearly all my savings on the cleanup specialist, after all. I didn’t have much money left.I pushed through the excited crowds, ignoring the Val Verde royal family watching the procession from the church balcony, and hurried toward my interview. After passing the rigorous evaluation, the director handed me an offer and said kindly, “I watched your audition video. That’s why I’m working overtime on Easter. And now, I think it was worth it. I hope you’ll shine in

We sat on opposite sides of the police station in total silence, not even looking at each other. That was when a police officer marched in with another man ahead of him and pulled my wallet out of the man's pocket."Ma'am, see if anything is missing."I checked it immediately to find everything was there. It was then that I realized I had completely misjudged that strange photographer.I looked over at him apologetically, but he was already watching me with a raised eyebrow. I remembered his threat to sue me for defamation. Since I didn’t know the laws of Val Verde and didn't want any trouble, I decided to take the initiative.I walked over to him, offering an awkward smile. "I'm sorry. I just got here and am not familiar with the area yet. That’s why I was a bit over-cautious. “Could you please not sue me? If you want compensation, I can pay you a little, though I don't have much cash left."His deep blue eyes locked onto mine long enough to make my cheeks burn. Finally, he

After landing in Mayrit, the immigration officer read out my new name in Verdian. It took me a moment to realize that “Lucia” was me, a new identity arranged by the cleanup specialist.I awkwardly explained, “Sorry, I’m not very familiar with the Verdian language.”She simply shrugged and let me pass.Dragging my suitcase out of the subway station, I followed a note to find the place I had rented back in New Haven. After several wrong turns, I finally found it on an unremarkable street and immediately realized it was nothing like what the agent had described. The “spacious, bright studio apartment with a private bathroom” was actually a low, aging building from the last century. The exhaustion from the journey, combined with the disappointment, made me feel a little disheartened. I had only just stepped onto the path toward freedom. However, when I pushed open the window, I realized I was wrong. The sunset poured in generously, coating the entire worn room in a warm golden glo
