Although Matteo's face appeared calm, his heart was racing. Anxiety coursed through his veins. But when he looked at Rose, the unrest slowly faded.

Yes, he was ready for his confession, even if it meant lying to and betraying his family. Still, he believed that the love he fought for would heal the damage.

“Well, I’ve already heard the news from you, Mr. Matteo. And yes, this is a bit surprising.” The lawyer gave a thin smile.

He glanced briefly at Letty and Nicole, who sat there with confident poise.

“Actually, this matter could have been handled just between the two of you as husband and wife,” the lawyer continued.

“Don’t you need witnesses?” Letty cut in.

Nicole added, "Don't we have a right to know? We’re Matteo’s sisters and Romilda’s in-laws. Isn’t that right, Romilda?”

Rose nodded awkwardly.

"It's not that; it's just..."

Before the lawyer could continue, Matteo raised his hand, clearly indicating that he didn’t want to debate the issue further. The room instantly fell silent.

  • The Substitute Twin Bride   47. Shadows in the Boardroom

Days passed with Rose buried in Letty’s job desk and handling the upcoming project. From morning until late at night, she worked side by side with Matteo, preparing presentations. What surprised Matteo most was how much Rose exceeded his expectations. The Romilda he knew before seemed like a completely different person from the woman before him now. This one was focused, intelligent, and full of brilliant ideas he never imagined she had. Somehow, it felt like he was living with Romilda… but she wasn’t the same woman.“This is excellent. The board will definitely approve of you as director,” Matteo said after reviewing their presentation on the laptop screen.“Don’t be too confident. I’m sure Letty’s ex-husband won’t make any reckless moves either.”Matteo looked at Rose and smiled. “You’re right. But my wife won’t be crushed that easily.”His words filled Rose’s heart with warmth. Day by day, she could no longer deny how deeply she had fallen in love with Matteo. Yet she also knew she

That afternoon, the lawyer arrived at the Cavanaugh residence to speak with Matteo in private. Their conversation seemed serious enough to unsettle Rose. She had overheard the lawyer’s arrival, and ever since, her nerves had been in knots. Two hours had passed. Rose paced the bedroom restlessly, her thoughts running wild with speculation, each one more frustrating than the last. And still, there was no word from Romilda, leaving Rose even more confused about what to do.A sudden knock at the door startled her. She hurried to open it, and there stood Gerri, the maid, offering a polite nod and a faint smile.“Ma’am, Mr. Matteo would like you in his study right now,” Gerri said.Rose frowned but said nothing, giving only a short nod. She followed Gerri toward Matteo’s study, her chest tight with dread as dark thoughts crowded her mind.“Has the lawyer already left?” Rose asked.Gerri shook her head. “Not yet, ma’am. I believe Mr. Matteo and the lawyer want to speak with you as well.”“Wh

A hurried knock sounded on the door, pulling Rose from her sleep. When she glanced to the side, Matteo was already out of bed. He walked to the door, still drowsy. When he opened it, Nicole barged in. But she froze the moment she saw Rose lying in bed, wrapped in the sheets."Oh, I..." Nicole stammered. "I'll wait for you in the dining room, Matteo. There's something important I need to discuss." "Okay," Matteo replied briefly.Once the door closed again, Rose sat up, clutching the blanket to cover herself. "Was that Nicole?" Rose asked. Matteo turned and nodded. "I have no idea what's going on, for her to come this early." "Oh..." Rose swallowed hard. "I feel awkward." "Why?" The man climbed back into bed and pulled Rose into his arms. "What's making you feel awkward?" "Sleeping here… in the same bed with you." "You're my wife. That's perfectly normal." Rose just nodded, but it still felt awkward. "We should shower. You don’t want to keep Nicole waiting, do you?" Rose tosse

The bathroom was becoming stifling, filling with steamy air rising from the bathtub. Matteo leaned against the edge of the tub. His wet hair clung to his forehead, while his hands explored Rose’s body.Matteo's eyes traced her glistening skin, illuminated by the soft glow of the overhead light.Meanwhile, seated on Matteo’s lap, Rose felt her knees tremble as they peeked out of the water. Their eyes locked. Rose bit her lower lip as Matteo kissed her breast hungrily. His lips parted. “You look beautiful.”"You look ridiculous," Rose teased, splashing a handful of water onto his chest.Matteo laughed, his voice low and warm, echoing off the tiled walls. As Rose went to splash him again, Matteo swiftly caught her wrist. He pulled her arm closer and kissed her fingers gently."Don't start a fight you can't win, Romilda," he growled.Rose smirked and let Matteo pull her in until their bodies pressed together with no space between them. The contact sent a shiver through her, warming not ju

The clinking of forks and knives filled the tense air of the Cavanaugh dining room during dinner. Ever since he met Jackson that morning, Matteo’s mood had changed drastically. Though he tried to act normal in front of Rose, she could tell he was hiding his feelings. That was why she decided to return home early and stay in her room until nightfall. In the Cavanaugh household, she was the public enemy—there was no way she could wander around freely with everyone watching her. When dinnertime came, Matteo finally returned. He looked even more grim, but Rose didn’t dare ask him about it. She remained silent.Matteo set down his utensils, drained the last of his water, and dabbed his lips with a napkin."Sorry, I had a lot on my mind at the office today. How was your day?” Matteo finally broke the silence after dinner.“It’s fine.” Rose gave him a faint smile. "I thought about you all day.""I didn't mean to make you worry. You don't have to think about me, Romilda."“But why not? You’re

  • The Substitute Twin Bride   42. The Risk

“Matteo, don’t make a rash decision,” Rose said. “There are still many other candidates who are more competent to replace Letty’s position.”“But I think Mau is a good fit for the role.”Rose looked uneasy because replacing Letty would obviously cause problems down the line. She was certain Letty’s hatred would only grow stronger.“Try to persuade Letty again. She wouldn’t just give up her position. She’s only angry,” Rose pleaded.“And what if Letty insists? We can’t let her position stay vacant for too long.”Rose mulled over Matteo’s words. He had a point. What worried her most was Letty’s ex-husband—he still had shares in the company. He could very well be eyeing Letty’s position. But if Rose agreed, wouldn’t that mean she would meet Jackson? And Rose knew Romilda was having an affair with Letty’s ex-husband. Things were about to get even more complicated.“Perhaps Mrs. Romilda should think this through first, sir,” the lawyer said, glancing briefly at Romilda before turning his
