Chapter 1

I slipped my phone back into my pocket, put on a smile warmer than any capitalist's, and stepped out from the corner.

My employer happened to be coming out of the kitchen with a plate of freshly cut fruit.

His name was Kyle Foster, a man with an exceptionally steady presence. The designer loungewear he wore so casually probably cost more than my entire year's living expenses.

"Mr. Arthur Wilder, come have some fruit," Kyle said with a smile. "Roobs is a little clumsy. She didn't scare you earlier, did she?"

Roobs?

The corner of my mouth twitched.

I glanced at my mother, Ruby Lawrence, who was following behind him with her head lowered, carrying a fruit platter. I'd lived long enough to see some strange things, but this was a first.

My mother was pushing fifty, and she had spent years working the assembly line on overnight factory shifts until wrinkles were etched into the corners of her eyes.

Here she was, in this mansion, being called "Roobs" with unmistakable affection. She'd somehow landed herself a taste of the wealthy life.

I had to admit, this sugar daddy’s taste was, to put it mildly, quite peculiar.

"No, not at all. Ms. Lawrence looks like a kind, family-oriented woman."

I practically bit down on the words "kind" and "family-oriented".

Mom coughed guiltily and hurriedly held a peeled grape up to Kyle's mouth. "Kyle, sit down and rest. Leave tutoring the child to Mr. Wilder."

Kyle casually took hold of her hand. Though he was smiling, there was an unmistakable sense of control in his voice.

"Roobs, what I like most about you is that you're completely devoted to Olivia and me.

"If I ever found out you were lying to me and had another family somewhere out there, I definitely wouldn't let you off easy."

My stomach churned, but my expression never changed.

Over the next two hours, I witnessed what a true master of emotional caregiving looked like.

Mom, who wouldn't even pick up a fallen broom at home, had transformed into the perfect homemaker and nanny rolled into one.

She massaged Kyle's shoulders and sat with five-year-old Olivia Foster, building LEGO sets. She even sang English nursery rhymes to Olivia with her hopelessly off-key voice.

Olivia called her Mom over and over.

As I worked through math problems with Olivia, I sneered inwardly.

Mom claimed she was only taking advantage of him.

However, from where I was sitting, nobody got this good at playing the role overnight.

This level of practice took time—at least a year or more.

When class finally ended, Kyle transferred my tutoring fee without hesitation and even added an extra $200 for a ride home.

After I walked out of the villa gates, Mom snuck out under the pretext of taking out the trash.

"Arthur..." She rubbed her hands together like a child who'd done something wrong.

"Stop right there." I raised a hand. "I don't care whether this whole story about taking money from him to help us is true or not. I only care about the result.

"Dad's dialysis and nutrition expenses for next week need to be paid by noon tomorrow. If they aren't, I guarantee that family portrait will be hanging beside his hospital bed tomorrow."

Mom nodded repeatedly.

To my surprise, her eyes even welled up with tears. "Don't worry. The money will be there.

"Arthur, I know you think I'm dirty, but if this can keep your father alive, then this old face and these weary bones of mine are worth selling."

As I watched her slightly heavier figure disappear back into the gilded villa, my emotions were a tangled mess.

On the ride home, I opened my banking app and checked Dad's medical account.

Sure enough, a large transfer had been deposited into the account every month for the past six months. It was enough to keep Dad on the best imported medication available.

Could Mom really be doing all of this just for the money?

I touched the two strands of hair tucked away in my pocket. While Olivia wasn't paying attention earlier, I'd quietly plucked them from her head.

Whether this was really only about money could be determined by finding out whether Olivia was biologically related to Mom.

After all, five years ago, Mom had claimed she was leaving town for a year to work elsewhere.

The surgeries were scheduled for three days later. When the news reached Dad's room, Mom cried and laughed like a child all at once. However, Dad gripped the edge of his blanket and flatly refused to sign the consent forms."No. Absolutely not! Arthur isn't married yet. He hasn't even started a family. If he loses a kidney, how is he supposed to live the rest of his life?"Dad's voice was weak, but his resistance was unwavering. To him, my health was ten thousand times more important than his own life."Dad, the doctors already explained it. People can live perfectly normal lives with one kidney. Do you really want me to stand by and watch you die, then spend the rest of my life drowning in guilt?"Mom wiped away her tears beside us. "Jayden, Arthur's right. If you're gone, this family falls apart."Nevertheless, Dad refused to budge. He even started a hunger strike in protest. The situation reached a complete stalemate. Then Kyle showed up again. He walked into the room carry

Money could be borrowed or earned. However, finding a compatible kidney donor was a gamble with fate itself."Take mine! Use my kidney!"Mom rushed into Dr. Henderson's office and immediately rolled up her sleeve. "I'm healthy as a horse. I can put away three full plates of food in one sitting!"Dr. Henderson sighed and slid the lab results toward us. "Ms. Lawrence, we tested you as soon as possible. Unfortunately, your antibodies are completely incompatible with Mr. Wilder's. A forced transplant would trigger an extremely severe rejection response. Not only would it fail to save him, it could put your life at risk as well.""What about me? He's my father!"Dr. Henderson shook his head, his eyes filled with regret."Your case is even more complicated. Your blood type is compatible, but your overall compatibility with your father is extremely low."Mom and I froze at the same time. It felt as though a giant invisible hand had wrapped around our throats. If family members couldn

I peeked out to look.At the far end of the hallway, Uncle Nick Wilder was marching toward us with his good-for-nothing son, Anthony Wilder, in tow.Uncle Nick was nothing short of a parasite. Back when Mom was still earning a modest living at the factory, he'd borrowed money from her under every excuse imaginable and never paid a cent back.Later, when Dad was diagnosed with kidney failure, Mom had gone to Uncle Nick in desperation. She had even gotten down on her knees outside his house and begged, but he never opened the door. Instead, he cursed through the metal gate, calling Dad a good-for-nothing money pit. Now, after catching wind of what had happened, he'd shown up like a fly drawn to blood."Nick, what are you doing here? This is a hospital." Mom hurried over and tried to stop them from entering."What am I doing here?" Uncle Nick sneered. "I'm here to visit my poor little brother who's practically at death's door."He shoved Mom aside, his beady eyes darting around gre

I rushed back to the hospital.Outside the ICU, several nurses were struggling to hold Mom back. She was so desperate that she kept slamming her head against the wall, blood running down her forehead."Jayden, don't do this! I'm begging you. Just stay alive. I'll do whatever you want!"Through the glass, I saw Dad lying weakly in the hospital bed, his face as pale as a sheet.Several doctors were frantically trying to reinsert his tubes, but he kept fighting them. There was no grief greater than a heart that had given up.I rushed into the room and grabbed Dad's frail hand."Dad, have you lost your mind? You just got out of surgery. Are you trying to kill yourself?"Dad looked at me. Tears rolled from the corners of his eyes and disappeared into his hair. With great effort, he removed his oxygen mask. His voice was barely audible, but every word hit like a knife."Arthur... I'm done fighting. This broken body of mine isn't worth your mother selling her dignity for. It's not w

I gripped the thin payment receipt in my hand, my fingers trembling uncontrollably.Mom was still on her knees on the floor, covering her face as she sobbed. "Why... why would he do that? After everything I lied to him about, he still..."I didn't have time to sit there and cry with Mom. Stuffing the receipt into her arms, I gritted my teeth and gave my instructions, "Stay here and watch over Dad. Don't go anywhere. Even if the sky falls, stay here until he comes out of surgery.""Arthur, where are you going?""I'm going to settle the score behind that $500,000."By the time I left the hospital, dawn was beginning to break. I took a taxi straight to Hawthorne Estates.During the ride, countless possibilities ran through my mind. Was Kyle feeling guilty? Was he trying to buy out the rest of Mom's life with money? Or was this just another rich man's condescending act of charity?Whatever the reason, I couldn't let Dad lie on an operating table burdened by the humiliation of bein

Screech! Bang! The piercing sound of brakes shattered the midnight silence of the neighborhood.Everything happened too fast.A speeding delivery rider on an electric scooter came flying around the corner. He didn't have time to avoid Dad and slammed head-on into him.Dad was thrown nearly seven feet through the air like a rag doll before crashing onto the stone edge of a landscaped planter."Jayden!" Mom stumbled and crawled toward him. Her hands shook so badly she didn't even dare touch his blood-covered head.My legs gave out beneath me, and I collapsed onto the ground, staring at the pool of blood spreading rapidly beneath Dad's body. The final thread holding me together snapped. The lie we'd worked so hard to maintain had finally turned on us in the most devastating way possible.Outside the emergency room, the red light above the doors shone blindingly.Mom's expensive silk loungewear was stained with bright red blood. She looked like a puppet whose soul had been ripped
