Chapter 2

Author: Lithe
Victoria glanced at me, told me to stay put at home, and then left with Mike.

I remained standing at the door for a long time even after they'd left. A few neighbors walking past our door saw me there, and they began whispering among themselves.

"I must say, Victoria is such a pitiful young woman. She already has her hands full taking care of things at the company during the day, and then, she has to come home to take care of this mentally-challenged idiot at night."

"I heard that the guy, Mike, had tried proposing to her a couple of times, but she kept turning him down because she couldn't bear abandoning that idiot."

"Really, Victoria is just too kind. In times like this, it's only right that she sends him to the mental hospital to be taken care of."

"Or it would be even better if he died. I'm sure that her days would be much better and her future would be brighter without him."

I felt a shudder in my chest when I heard them. I couldn't stop myself from approaching them. However, the moment they saw me walking toward them, they quickly backed away, fear evident in their eyes.

I blinked at them and asked anxiously, "Is it true? Will Vicky not be sad anymore if I go to the mental hospital?"

When they didn't answer, I pressed them for answers and asked again, "Also… will Vicky be happy if I'm dead?"

They still didn't answer my question. Instead, they just walked around me and left hurriedly, as though I was some kind of plague to be avoided.

I stared at their disappearing backs and suddenly recalled how Victoria once brought me to a park very, very far away on my birthday last year. She told me to sit on the bench before petting me gently on the head and said, "Wait for me here, Jo. I'll be right back."

I waited at the bench from morning till night, until the streetlights turned on, one by one, but she still never came back for me.

In the end, I relied on my vague memories to slowly find my way back to the apartment. I even thought back then that she must be very anxious because I'd been gone and missing for hours. But when she opened the door and saw that it was me, there wasn't an ounce of happiness on her face—just sadness and disappointment.

I finally understood it all now. She had planned to abandon me back then, hadn't she?

I felt my nose tingling all of a sudden. I crouched and buried my face between my knees as tears trickled down from my eyes.

But I quickly remembered what the neighbors said. According to them, Victoria would be happier and have an easier life if I disappeared. Would that mean she would smile happily, too?

At that thought, I stood back up, wiped the tears away from my face, and mustered the courage to leave the apartment building.

I wandered aimlessly down the road for a long time, paying no attention to where I was going or whether it was safe to cross the street. I didn't know how to find my way to the mental hospital the neighbors had been talking about.

While distracted in the middle of the road, a speeding car suddenly approached me. I froze on the spot, unable to move my legs.

Right at that moment, a pair of arms yanked me back onto the sidewalk.

I looked up in shock and saw Victoria's worried and frightened face staring back at me.

"Jordan! Did I not tell you to stay put at home? What the hell are you doing out here on your own? You idiot, can't you just let me stop worrying about you for just a single day? Are you only happy if I were to die, worrying about you every single time?"

I watched her break down and finally say in a shaky voice, "I just wanted to go to the mental hospital… I just wanted to—"

She was shocked when she heard me say that. A hint of remorse appeared in her eyes. However, it quickly disappeared as she raised her voice at me.

"What the hell are you talking about? Did those damn neighbors start talking shit about you again?"

I quickly shook my head and tried to defend myself.

"No. I was the one who wanted to go there. Can't you bring me there, Vicky? Please?"

Just as the words rolled from my mouth, she suddenly cupped my face in her hands and yelled at me, "I will never abandon you, Jordan Hurley! Never!

"I will always protect you and take care of you for the rest of my life! So stop thinking nonsense like this."

I looked at her red-rimmed eyes and nodded obediently. However, I knew very well in my heart that it wasn't the case.

Because when the car had been about to hit me earlier, I had already seen her standing on the sidewalk, hesitating for several seconds over whether she should save me.

"Do you really want to spend the rest of your life in prison?" Mike asked. "You've finally been given a chance to start over and turn your life around. Are you sure you want to give it all up right now?"These words pierced into Victoria's heart like a knife, and she froze.Mike sensed her wavering and immediately softened his voice again."We were both wrong in this matter, Vicky. However, nobody else will have to know as long as we both keep our mouths shut. We'll finally have our own happily ever after…"Victoria shuddered, but she stopped struggling after that. Mike gently turned her around and pulled her into his arms. She didn't fight him, but she didn't respond to him either. Instead, she just looked out in the distance with her hollow eyes.…Ultimately, Victoria decided to compromise, marrying Mike just three months later. However, they didn't hold a grand wedding reception. Instead, they just registered their marriage at the city hall and moved into the marital home th

Mike continued, "On top of that, Jordan's death doesn't even have anything to do with you anyway!""How could it have nothing to do with me?" Victoria snapped, suddenly looking at him with red eyes. "If I had never locked him up in that place, if I had never chained him up by his ankles, he would have been able to escape when that fire broke out!"I was the one who caused his death!"I hovered over her anxiously when she said that. "It's not your fault, Vicky. Please don't blame yourself for it."Then, I looked at Mike angrily and said, "It's he who should be sorry! He was the one who directly caused my death!"However, my voice was like a breath against the surface of water, barely making any ripples. What was the point of saying all this anymore anyway? So what if Victoria finally found out about the truth? It would only give her more things to worry about.I had an inkling that I was still lingering in this world after my death, not in the underworld, because of her guilt and

The doctor wiped the sweat from his forehead and explained shakily, "It's not like that, Ms. Chandler. We're equally as confused as you are. "From a medical perspective, even though the patient's injuries are quite severe, they aren't enough to cause brain death. It's almost as if the patient just no longer has the will to live anymore. It's like he doesn't even want to wake up.""That's impossible…"Victoria stumbled backward, her chest hurting so much that it felt like it was about to tear open."Jordan would cry if he even had to get a shot… He's so timid and scared of everything… How could he possibly want to die?"You're lying! You must bring him back to life at once! Do it!"Victoria threw herself against my bed and began forcefully shaking my bandaged-up body."Jordan Hurley! You're not allowed to die! Do you hear me? Wake up! I know you can hear me! Wake up this instant!"I could hear her crying and sobbing as my consciousness faded. She sounded like she was in great p

My consciousness grew faint, almost as light as a feather. This wasn't too bad either. At the very least, Victoria no longer had to worry about an idiot like me anymore.Actually, I never liked that word.It made me feel suffocated every time I heard someone call me that, but I never dared show it. I didn't want her to feel even sadder just because she saw me upset.Once, she took me out for a walk, and a group of mischievous kids mocked the way I waddled as I walked, calling me a "stupid idiot" the entire time. Victoria became furious, rushed at them, and chased them away in a rage. She also came back to comfort me, telling me not to take the kids' words to heart. However, on the way back, I realized that her eyes were red-rimmed. After that incident, she rarely ever brought me out to crowded places again.I knew that it was because she was ashamed of me."Blood oxygen levels are still dropping…""Prepare the epinephrine for resuscitation!"Some voices came from a distance, b

After what felt like an eternity, I began to develop a fever. My throat grew parched and burning.I croaked weakly, "Water… Need water…"However, nobody responded at all. This time, I heard a conversation from upstairs coming through the vent."I'm sorry for dragging you into this, Mike."It was Victoria's voice. "I only just realized how stupid I'd been in the past, giving up my future and happiness for a half-witted idiot.""It's not too late yet, Vicky. You still have a whole life ahead of you," Mike replied gently. After a short pause, Victoria spoke again. "I've already thought things through. I promise that I'll marry you. Let's do it next month. It's… It's about time that I lived for myself now."A while later, the sounds of crying and embraces drifted out from inside.I lay on the ground, tears flowing silently down my face. So, Victoria would only be happy once I disappeared from her life.It was a sad and horrible truth, but I felt comfort in it. The pain in my body

  • The Sun I Followed Into the Abyss   Chapter 3

The next morning, Victoria brought me to the hospital for a follow-up. I didn't understand what the doctor said, but I saw her frowning very hard. I realized that my condition had most probably gotten worse at this point. The realization weighed heavily on my chest. I couldn't continue dragging Victoria down with me anymore. So, I waited until she left me alone as she went to get the car, and I quietly slinked out of the parking garage, turning around to run out of the hospital building.I had to succeed this time. I had to find that place they called a mental hospital, no matter what. However, I'd only just gotten to the door when I bumped into Mike. His expression turned dark as soon as he saw that I was alone. He grabbed me harshly by my arm, and it hurt so badly that I cowered in fright."Jordan Hurley! Why did you sneak out by yourself again like this? Can't you stop creating trouble for Victoria?" he gritted through his teeth. "Why is it always you? Why does it always have to
