Chapter 2

Penulis: March Wind
Clara pestered Julian until he gave in and came over, and he put the book in my hands.

He turned to go. I took a breath.

"I've followed the professor since nobody knew his name. I'm the one who gave him his pen name."

Then I lifted my face and looked him in the eye.

The room was loud. Julian gave no sign of hearing me. His body checked for half a second, and then he turned away.

I reached out and caught the hem of his jacket. "Professor. I'm still waiting for your answer."

Years ago, when I told him how I felt, his ears went scarlet and he couldn't get a word out. I'd held his jacket exactly like this. Julian, I'm still waiting for your answer.

And in my head I told him: if you claim me now, I'll forgive you.

Julian turned back with a smile that was warm and completely distant. "Oh, it's you. It's been so long it took me a second. I'm sorry. I've got a few more copies in my office. Come with me, I'll get you one."

He steered me out. In the lobby I planted my feet and refused to go any farther.

His hands closed on my shoulders. "Lena, what's wrong? We agreed—"

"That it isn't safe? Julian, are you scared I'm not safe, or are you scared they'll find out the brilliant Professor Gyver has a blind wife he can't put on display?"

His brows drew together. "Lena, don't talk about yourself like that. I've never been ashamed of you. But you can't even see where the food is. I don't have anything left over tonight to take care of you with."

My throat tightened, and the tears were half a second away.

Panic came into his eyes. He wiped them away with his thumb.

"Lena, this is work. Clara's my student. Looking after her is my job. Come on. There are too many people here. Let me take you home first."

Too many people. It had practically become his catchphrase.

"Julian, can we go to the music festival?"

"There'll be too many people. You'll get knocked around."

"Julian, will you take me to the grocery store?"

"It'll be packed. Tell me what you want and I'll bring it back."

"Julian, can I be the one who brings you flowers at your launch?"

"Lena, that's not really appropriate."

Back then I'd still hang off his arm and pout. "You said I'd be the first person to hand you flowers every time you put out a new book."

He'd sigh. "There'll be too many people. I'm afraid I won't find you."

I thought about our first year together. The amusement park, the parade that swept between us. Within minutes he'd come through that crowd and taken my hand like he'd never lost it.

I asked how he'd found me with so many people there. He said when you love someone, that person glows. It doesn't matter where they are in a crowd, you see them first. Lena, I love you. Wherever you are, I'll always find you in one look.

I couldn't tell anymore whether he'd stopped loving me, or whether all of that had only ever been a writer being good with words.

"Julian, post about me. Right now."

His hands went still on my seat belt.

"Just say I'm your wife. Then I'll go home without another word."

He locked the doors anyway, and tucked my hair behind my ear. "We agreed to keep it quiet. I'm at a critical point in my career, and there's a review coming. Public perception matters right now."

"Nobody knows I'm your wife. They're asking whether you're going to marry Clara."

He laughed, helpless.

"That's just talk at the dinner table. Don't take it seriously."

Then his phone lit up. Clara was calling.

"Professor, where'd you go? If you don't come back soon, they're going to get me drunk."

Her voice came soft and complaining through the speaker.

Julian barely thought about it. He put my cane back in my hand.

"Lena, she doesn't sound right. I'm going to run up there. Wait in the car."

He jogged a few steps, then doubled back and helped me out of the car again.

"Actually, I'll probably have to drive her home after. Here's cash. Take a taxi."

He pushed a few bills into my hand and left me standing in the middle of an enormous parking garage.

Right then, he could forget all over again that I couldn't see.

Lena's studio did better and better. The man Julian had seen on the summit stayed close to her. Watching her life come back into order, Julian knew it was time. That day, after she'd sent off her last customer, he walked into her shop. He'd worried she wouldn't want to see his face and actually considered covering it, then realized that would only frighten her, and gave it up.Julian came in and held out a knife to me."Lena. Kill me. I can't pay back what I owe you. Take this life now. The other two I'll give you in the next one."I looked at the man in front of me, worn down to nothing, and my eyes stung.I took the knife from him and locked it in a cabinet."I resented you. I lost the baby, I lost my sight, I lost my work, and every one of those was because of you. And then you were the one who couldn't stand the sight of me. You were the one who pulled away. Where did you get the right?"When my sight came back, I ran to find you before I'd even told my parents. I wanted to

"I know. In my head you're still the little kid who used to chase after me. How did you end up carrying all this?"He propped my pillow higher. "Just so we're clear, I'm still reporting for apple duty on schedule. You can tell me anything you want. All I want is for you to be happy. That's the whole list. So relax."There wasn't much wrong with me, but my parents kept me in the hospital another two weeks anyway. Now that I could see, I decided to go back to what I used to do and open a handmade-goods studio. I spent the quiet days drawing up designs. Dad bought me a storefront downtown and had it built out to my drawings. He must have spent a fortune. By the day I was discharged, it was completely finished.Mom was worried I'd get bored, so she took over the lease on the cafe next door. She made specialty coffee occasionally. Mostly she wandered around my studio poking at things.I'd built up a lot of clients before I lost my sight. The moment I posted that I was open, they all c

"Julian, which one are you this time?"I sat in the photo booth, laughing, asking which character he wanted. He made a pained face, shut his eyes, and pointed at random. "The little girl in pink, I guess."Then he wrapped himself around me and complained. "Lena. My wonderful Lena. Next time can I have a boy character? I'm a red-blooded guy, you know."The countdown started. With one second left we both looked up and grinned at the lens with every tooth we had.The last frame caught him kissing the side of my face. That strip became his treasure. He framed it and took it to the office, said it would keep him moving until he was a real writer who could give me a better life. The memories came through one frame at a time. Julian running toward me, laughing. Julian sliding the ring onto my finger and kissing my forehead. Julian holding me while he dried my hair. Julian resting a hand on my stomach and saying, softly, "Hi, baby. You and me are going to love your mom together."And t

We stood facing each other in the dark, and there was nothing but wind moving through the trees. Then a phone rang and broke it.Julian answered. A few seconds in, relief washed over his face.He turned and ran, and a few steps out he remembered me.He slowed down. He didn't turn around."Lena, don't say things you don't mean. Nine years doesn't come apart in one night. Once Clara's all right, I'll come explain everything myself."I didn't answer. I pulled off my ring and dropped it in a trash can.Three years dating, six years married. It'd be a lie to say I walked out of it clean. The apartment was nothing but the two of us, everywhere I looked. By the time I'd packed my things the sky had gone pale at the edges.I called movers to take everything to my parents' place, then got a cab out to Suncrest Peak, on the far side of Lake Larkspur.I'd barely reached the top when the sky changed. Blue-white going soft gold, and then the sun came up out of the horizon line, first a sli

Julian was still casting around for a solution when he turned and caught sight of me.He grabbed my arm and pushed me toward the bed."Lena, apologize to Clara. Ask her to let us take her to the hospital."The past came up in my throat and I couldn't breathe around it.He saw my face, and he went down on his knees."Lena, please. I can't stand listening to her cry."I looked at the man in front of me, and my eyes blurred.Lena, please stay alive. If you make it through this, I'll spend the rest of my life paying you back. The man who'd said that and the man kneeling in front of me slid into each other until they were one.I gagged, shoved him off, and ran.He came after me down the whole corridor, caught my hand, insisted I go back with him.I stopped, and I slapped him as hard as I could. The crack of it emptied the world of sound. He held his cheek and stared at me, confused."Lena, how did you know the way out here? How did you know where my face was?""You... you can

Not long after, my phone rang."Lena, did you get a cab? Text me when you're home."Before I could answer he'd hung up. All that came through was one line from the background."Forfeit is, the professor has to kiss Clara!"A little pouting from her and he'd panicked so completely that he forgot I couldn't see well enough to flag down a car by myself.I opened the little mirror I'd picked up off the passenger seat. There was a photo-booth strip stuck to the glass. Julian and Clara, faces pressed together. I looked at my own face through theirs.Plain, washed out. Nothing like bright, glowing Clara.Julian and I used to promise each other a photo-booth strip on every birthday. It started when we were students. Later he said we were too old for something so childish. Later still he said my eyes couldn't focus for the camera, and he was afraid I wouldn't like how they came out.Now he had a student, and it wasn't childish anymore.I lowered the mirror and walked out of the garage
