Chapter 3

Autor: Crystal K
"I don't care about the cost, Marcus," I gripped the phone tighter. "I have to leave him."

I heard the rustle of papers on his end.

"Let's see... your prenup... Jesus, Maria, this isn't a prenup. It's a slave contract."

"What does it say?"

"If you initiate the divorce, you walk away with nothing. Not only that, you owe him fifty million dollars in damages." Marcus's voice was heavy. "Worse, Article Thirteen forbids you from removing any 'asset' belonging to the Moretti family. And Maria, they define an unborn child as an asset."

My blood ran cold.

"But there's one exception," Marcus continued. "If you can prove Victor violated the marital fidelity clause, the contract is void."

"I have proof."

"What kind of proof?"

"I saw him with Julia Romano tonight. And... this baby isn't mine."

"What? You need to explain..."

"Marcus, give me twenty-four hours. I'll get you all the proof you need. For now, just tell me: how do I disappear?"

"Maria, this is dangerous. The Moretti family's tentacles are everywhere in Chicago, even..."

"I know the risks. Tell me how."

Marcus was quiet for a long time.

"You need a new identity. A completely clean background, something that can pass their internal checks. I have a guy..."

"Give me the number."

After hanging up, I went to the closet.

I froze when I opened the doors.

In the massive walk-in, my clothes took up a tiny corner.

A few simple dresses, a couple of basic sweaters, one pair of flats.

The rest of the space belonged to Victor. Rows of custom Armani, bespoke suits from Savile Row—each one worth more than my parents’ house.

My entire wardrobe wouldn't even fill a small suitcase.

Five years of marriage. This was all I had.

I grabbed a small backpack and started packing the basics.

A change of clothes, my passport, and the two hundred thousand dollars in cash I had stashed in a lingerie drawer.

It was money I’d saved, bit by bit, from the allowance Victor gave me.

Looks like that little habit just saved my life.

I took out my phone and dialed the number Marcus gave me.

"Yeah?" a low voice answered.

"I'm a client of Marcus Kane. I need a new ID, something that can..."

The door was suddenly thrown open.

My heart stopped.

Victor stood in the doorway, that familiar, tender smile on his face.

I quickly ended the call, my hand shaking as I hid the phone behind my back.

"Baby, you're back. Why didn't you come find me?" He walked toward me, his eyes searching my face, missing nothing.

"I... I just got in. I was tired, so I came straight upstairs."

"Marco already told me the good news." His smile grew wider. "You're pregnant."

He came closer, his hands framing my face.

"I'm so happy, Maria. Thank you for finally giving me this child."

He leaned down and kissed my lips. It was a kiss of triumph, of satisfaction.

I smiled coldly in my mind.

Of course you're happy, Victor. I'm finally giving you and Julia a baby.

He pulled back and snapped his fingers.

Two maids entered, pushing a small cart.

"A reward for my good girl."

On the cart was a bouquet of roses and a velvet box. Inside was a diamond necklace. It was beautiful, but it was a consolation prize. A cheap copy of the one sparkling on Julia’s throat.

"Like it?" Victor asked, his voice generous, like he was giving charity.

"It's beautiful," I forced a smile.

Even pregnant, even after years of pain for him, what he gave me was still just a fraction of what he gave Julia.

Good thing I was leaving.

"Oh, one more thing," Victor said suddenly. "Julia, come in."

Julia glided into the room. She’d changed into an expensive silk robe.

"There was an... incident at Julia's villa tonight," Victor said, his tone dangerously casual. "She'll be staying here for the foreseeable future. I trust you'll make her feel welcome."

Three months later."The Boss has lost his mind."Tony whispered to Marco. "He talks to himself all day, just says her name over and over.""All of Chicago is laughing at us," Marco's face was grim. "The Moretti name is ruined.""He has to die.""For the future of the family."That night, they surrounded the estate.Victor sat in Maria's old room, holding her picture."Maria... can you hear me? I left you another message... why don't you answer?"The door was kicked in.Six men in black suits rushed in."It's just business, Boss," Marco said, his voice flat. He raised his gun.Victor didn't even look at him. His eyes were locked on the photograph in his hand.A single shot echoed in the empty room. His last breath was a whisper. A name."Maria."And then, it was over.---Maria's POVThe California sun was warm.I was painting a field of lavender, the purple flowers swaying in the breeze."News from Chicago," Alex said, his voice neutral, walking up behind me with a tablet."What news?

Victor’s POVJulia's screams finally stopped.I was alone in the dungeon with her body.I wiped the blood from my hands and walked slowly out of the basement. But there was no satisfaction. No victory. Just a deeper emptiness. The silence wasn't from the missing soldiers; it was the gaping hole where her presence used to be. The house was dead because she was gone. Even Marco, loyal for ten years, was gone."It's over, Boss," he'd said before he left. "The Castellanos are out of our league."I stood in the living room, looking at my once-bustling home. It was dead silent.I remembered when Maria was still here. She was always in the kitchen, keeping dinner warm for me, even if I came home at 3 AM.She would always rub my back when I was angry, calming me with her gentle voice. She would always ask, so carefully, "Victor, are you tired? Can I give you a massage?"And I always pushed her away. Told her I had more important things to do.Now, no one would ever ask if I was tired again.I

Victor's POVWhen I got back from the island, my world had changed.News travels fast.Every corner of Chicago was whispering the same story—Don Victor Moretti got humiliated by the Castellano family from New York.My own men started looking at me differently."Boss, the Ricci family took the east side docks," Marco said, avoiding my eyes."What?""They're saying... they're saying you've lost your grip. That you're not worth their loyalty anymore."I flipped the table over."Bastards! Get everyone together. I want to wipe those traitors off the map!""Boss..." Marco hesitated. "We don't have the men. A lot of the guys... they've gone over to other families.""How many?""More than half."I collapsed into my chair.Overnight, I went from the king of Chicago to a rat in the street. And it was all because of that damn woman."Where is Julia?""She... she didn't come home today."Didn't come home?A dark feeling washed over me.---Julia's POVI sat in the back of a luxury sedan, a briefca

Victor’s POVThe hospital door flew off its hinges under my boot."Where is she?!" I roared, slamming the nearest doctor against the wall. His white coat was no shield."Mr. Moretti, we really don't know! She just vanished, the security footage..."I punched him in the face.Blood splattered on the white wall."I don't want excuses! I want my woman and my child!"Marco rushed in. "Boss, we've locked down all of Chicago. Airports, train stations, highway exits. Our men are everywhere.""And?""Her bank accounts are dead. Her phone is off. But...""But what?""A witness saw a black Rolls-Royce near the hospital. The plates are from New York."New York?Who the hell dares to touch my woman on my turf?"Find them!" I roared. "Find out who owns that car! Use every contact we have. I want Maria found in twenty-four hours!"Marco hesitated. "Boss, if it's a New York crew...""I don't care who it is!" I smashed a vase on the table. "Maria is my property! Anyone who touches her dies!"Two days

I was lost in darkness for a long time. When I came to, my first feeling was fear.Did Victor catch me?Was I back in that golden cage?I snapped my eyes open, ready to face his rage. But it wasn't Victor's office. It wasn't the bedroom decorated to his tastes. It was a room I'd never seen before.High ceilings with beautiful moldings. A crystal chandelier casting a warm glow. The walls were an elegant cream, hung with impressionist paintings. But it was the view that stole my breath. A floor-to-ceiling window overlooked the entire glittering Chicago skyline. This room... it was familiar.Like a room from my dreams. Warm, elegant, full of life. Not like Victor's house—cold, oppressive, where every piece of furniture screamed power and control.I tried to sit up. A dull ache spread from my stomach. The baby...My hand trembled as I reached for my belly. It was wrapped in thick bandages."Don't move," a gentle voice said. "The doctor said you need to rest."I turned my head. My heart nea

Julia smiled sweetly. "Maria, I hope I'm not intruding. I'll be a great roommate."I looked at her. This woman. The biological mother of the child in my womb. Moving into my home.My heart was bleeding. Was Victor doing this so she could bond with "our" baby early? So she could watch me, make sure the surrogate didn't mess up?"Of course you're not intruding," my voice was terrifyingly calm. "Welcome, Julia.""Actually..." Julia said in a delicate voice. "I think the suite next to the master bedroom would be best. That way, if Maria needs anything during the night, I can be right there to help."The suite next to the master. The best room in the house besides our own. The one with a private jacuzzi and a sea-view balcony. She wanted to be as close as possible."I think..." I forced another smile. "Someone of her status deserves the best."Victor nodded, pleased."You're so thoughtful, Maria," Julia said, a flash of victory in her eyes. "We're going to be the best of friends."Friends?
