Chapter 1

Autor: Crystal K
Five years married to Don Victor. 999 needles later, I was finally pregnant. But the baby wasn't mine. It belonged to his mistress, Julia.

An hour ago, I was flying home from the hospital, the positive report clutched in my hand. It was Christmas Day. My husband, Don Victor, was about to get the surprise of his life.

I reached his office. The heavy bass of a song pulsed from under the door. Then I heard his laugh—the sound that used to own my heart.

Victor was inside.

I took a deep breath, ready to give him the one thing he wanted more than anything.

And then I heard another woman's moan.

"Ah... Victor... right there..."

My hand froze on the doorknob.

"You like that, my queen? My Julia?" Victor's voice was rough, full of lust.

My queen.

He never called me that.

In five years, the closest he got was "baby."

Julia.

The daughter of some second-rate family who’d been throwing herself at Victor for years.

I’d heard her name before we were married.

The woman was obsessed with him. She even threw herself onto his lap in a casino once, wearing nothing but leather, begging him for one night.

I was terrified. But a week later, Victor showed up with 999 roses and a ring.

He said he loved me. He said my family were nobodies, that we had no standing.

He promised if I gave him an heir, he’d make our secret marriage public. I'd be the Donna everyone would envy.

But after the wedding, the doctors said I couldn't get pregnant. It had to be IVF.

Last night, after a shower, I touched him in bed, tried to guide his hand to my breast.

He pushed me off. "Maria, I'm exhausted tonight. You know how business is. And your body... let's wait until after the baby, okay?

Now he was in his office, fucking someone else.

"Deeper... ah... you're driving me crazy..." Julia's voice was sweet and filthy.

The wet slap of flesh on flesh.

Their ragged breaths.

"Tell me you love me, Julia."

"I love you... my king... I only love you..."

It was a knife to the chest.

Just yesterday morning, he told me, "Love is a luxury, Maria. We have duty."

"Victor, is that stupid woman still dreaming of being your wife?" Julia asked, still breathless, her voice dripping with scorn.

"Maria?" Victor chuckled. Not a trace of warmth. "She's so naive. Five years, and she still believes she's barren."

Barren. That was Victor's lie?

I looked at the purple pinpricks covering my arms.

I remembered crying silently in the bathroom after every failed attempt.

The doctor saying, "Mrs. Moretti, there is an issue with your ovarian function."

Victor holding me, saying, "It's okay. We'll keep trying. Science will help us."

It was all a lie.

"To think I put birth control in her coffee every morning for five years, and the bitch never suspected a thing." Julia’s laugh was sharp and ugly, like shattering glass.

Birth control.

I thought of the coffee Victor made for me himself every morning.

"A special blend from the nutritionist," he’d said. "It's good for getting pregnant."

I remembered drinking every last drop, so grateful. I thought it was his love.

"The way she cries like a baby with every hormone shot... it makes me want to laugh," Victor said, his voice cold. "I'm the one stopping her from getting pregnant, and she thanks me for going to the hospital with her."

My body began to tremble.

Every shot, every blood draw, every gut-wrenching failure... he was there for all of it, playing the part of a loving husband.

Stroking my hair, saying, "We'll get there, I promise."

"So the baby in her belly..." Julia asked.

"You're too precious for that, Julia. A Romano princess shouldn't have to suffer childbirth," Victor said, whispering the sweet words I'd craved for five years. "As for the baby in Maria... of course it's ours, darling. Your egg, my sperm. She’s just the perfect vessel."

My hand fell from the doorknob. The pregnancy report slipped from my fingers and hit the floor.

Tears streamed down my face.

Even the baby... this baby wasn't mine?

Three months later."The Boss has lost his mind."Tony whispered to Marco. "He talks to himself all day, just says her name over and over.""All of Chicago is laughing at us," Marco's face was grim. "The Moretti name is ruined.""He has to die.""For the future of the family."That night, they surrounded the estate.Victor sat in Maria's old room, holding her picture."Maria... can you hear me? I left you another message... why don't you answer?"The door was kicked in.Six men in black suits rushed in."It's just business, Boss," Marco said, his voice flat. He raised his gun.Victor didn't even look at him. His eyes were locked on the photograph in his hand.A single shot echoed in the empty room. His last breath was a whisper. A name."Maria."And then, it was over.---Maria's POVThe California sun was warm.I was painting a field of lavender, the purple flowers swaying in the breeze."News from Chicago," Alex said, his voice neutral, walking up behind me with a tablet."What news?

Victor’s POVJulia's screams finally stopped.I was alone in the dungeon with her body.I wiped the blood from my hands and walked slowly out of the basement. But there was no satisfaction. No victory. Just a deeper emptiness. The silence wasn't from the missing soldiers; it was the gaping hole where her presence used to be. The house was dead because she was gone. Even Marco, loyal for ten years, was gone."It's over, Boss," he'd said before he left. "The Castellanos are out of our league."I stood in the living room, looking at my once-bustling home. It was dead silent.I remembered when Maria was still here. She was always in the kitchen, keeping dinner warm for me, even if I came home at 3 AM.She would always rub my back when I was angry, calming me with her gentle voice. She would always ask, so carefully, "Victor, are you tired? Can I give you a massage?"And I always pushed her away. Told her I had more important things to do.Now, no one would ever ask if I was tired again.I

Victor's POVWhen I got back from the island, my world had changed.News travels fast.Every corner of Chicago was whispering the same story—Don Victor Moretti got humiliated by the Castellano family from New York.My own men started looking at me differently."Boss, the Ricci family took the east side docks," Marco said, avoiding my eyes."What?""They're saying... they're saying you've lost your grip. That you're not worth their loyalty anymore."I flipped the table over."Bastards! Get everyone together. I want to wipe those traitors off the map!""Boss..." Marco hesitated. "We don't have the men. A lot of the guys... they've gone over to other families.""How many?""More than half."I collapsed into my chair.Overnight, I went from the king of Chicago to a rat in the street. And it was all because of that damn woman."Where is Julia?""She... she didn't come home today."Didn't come home?A dark feeling washed over me.---Julia's POVI sat in the back of a luxury sedan, a briefca

Victor’s POVThe hospital door flew off its hinges under my boot."Where is she?!" I roared, slamming the nearest doctor against the wall. His white coat was no shield."Mr. Moretti, we really don't know! She just vanished, the security footage..."I punched him in the face.Blood splattered on the white wall."I don't want excuses! I want my woman and my child!"Marco rushed in. "Boss, we've locked down all of Chicago. Airports, train stations, highway exits. Our men are everywhere.""And?""Her bank accounts are dead. Her phone is off. But...""But what?""A witness saw a black Rolls-Royce near the hospital. The plates are from New York."New York?Who the hell dares to touch my woman on my turf?"Find them!" I roared. "Find out who owns that car! Use every contact we have. I want Maria found in twenty-four hours!"Marco hesitated. "Boss, if it's a New York crew...""I don't care who it is!" I smashed a vase on the table. "Maria is my property! Anyone who touches her dies!"Two days

I was lost in darkness for a long time. When I came to, my first feeling was fear.Did Victor catch me?Was I back in that golden cage?I snapped my eyes open, ready to face his rage. But it wasn't Victor's office. It wasn't the bedroom decorated to his tastes. It was a room I'd never seen before.High ceilings with beautiful moldings. A crystal chandelier casting a warm glow. The walls were an elegant cream, hung with impressionist paintings. But it was the view that stole my breath. A floor-to-ceiling window overlooked the entire glittering Chicago skyline. This room... it was familiar.Like a room from my dreams. Warm, elegant, full of life. Not like Victor's house—cold, oppressive, where every piece of furniture screamed power and control.I tried to sit up. A dull ache spread from my stomach. The baby...My hand trembled as I reached for my belly. It was wrapped in thick bandages."Don't move," a gentle voice said. "The doctor said you need to rest."I turned my head. My heart nea

Julia smiled sweetly. "Maria, I hope I'm not intruding. I'll be a great roommate."I looked at her. This woman. The biological mother of the child in my womb. Moving into my home.My heart was bleeding. Was Victor doing this so she could bond with "our" baby early? So she could watch me, make sure the surrogate didn't mess up?"Of course you're not intruding," my voice was terrifyingly calm. "Welcome, Julia.""Actually..." Julia said in a delicate voice. "I think the suite next to the master bedroom would be best. That way, if Maria needs anything during the night, I can be right there to help."The suite next to the master. The best room in the house besides our own. The one with a private jacuzzi and a sea-view balcony. She wanted to be as close as possible."I think..." I forced another smile. "Someone of her status deserves the best."Victor nodded, pleased."You're so thoughtful, Maria," Julia said, a flash of victory in her eyes. "We're going to be the best of friends."Friends?
